The acromioclavicular joint is an important component of the shoulder girdle; it links the axial skeleton with the upper limb. This joint, a planar diarthrodial articulation between the clavicle and the acromion, contains a meniscus-like fibrous disk that is prone to degeneration. The acromioclavicular capsule and ligaments stabilize the joint in the horizontal direction, while the coracoclavicular ligament complex provides vertical stability. Dynamic stability is afforded by the deltoid and trapezius muscles during clavicular and scapular motion. The acromioclavicular joint is susceptible to

Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) are characterized by obsessions (recurrent, inappropriate thoughts or images) and/or compulsions (repetitive behaviours or mental acts) that cause marked impairment in functioning. This article summarizes the principles and recommendations of care for OCD. A "stepped care" approach is recommended, with increasing intensity of treatment according to severity and clinical complexity. The pillars of care articulate different components, starting with building a therapeutic alliance and psychoeducation, followed by psychotherapeutic and/or pharmacological appro

Trismus is a rare presentation affecting neonates, children, and adults. In newborns there are serious implications, with potential to affect feeding, cause airway problems, and make intubation difficult. Causes of trismus seen in the paediatric patient are discussed in this review article; they are divided into intra- and extra-articular types. The extra-articular group consists of congenital and acquired disorders. The acquired group includes infective causes such as tetanus, iatrogenic causes related to drugs, cancer or dental treatment, and trauma causing articulation difficulty or trigger

Three patients with hemarthrosis complicating anticoagulant therapy are described. Two had acute hemarthrosis of the knee joint occurring during long term oral anticoagulant therapy for cardiovascular disorders. Joint symptoms disappeared rapidly after arthrocentesis and diminution of the dose of oral anticoagulant medication. The third patient has been on chronic hemodialysis for the last three years. After 2 years of this therapy he developed periarthritis of the right shoulder, followed suddenly by hemarthrosis of the right shoulder which remained symptomatic for 9 months in spite of severa

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a debilitating pediatric speech disorder characterized by varying symptom profiles, comorbid deficits, and limited response to intervention. Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is an inherited pediatric language disorder characterized by delayed and/or disordered oral language skills including impaired semantics, syntax, and discourse. To date, the genes associated with CAS and SLI are not fully characterized. In the current study, we evaluated behavioral and genetic profiles of seven children with CAS and eight children with SLI, while ensuring all children

Pica is simply defined as the consumption of none food products such as laundry starch, clay dirt, ice, soap, and chalk. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) classifies Pica as the habitual consumption of nonfood and non-nutritive substances for at least one year. Pica disorder is usually unnoticed, under-reported, causes serious harm to clients especially African American women, and seldom discussed in social work scholarship. It is, therefore, important to begin to sensitize social workers to the harmful effects of Pica, especially because it is often unrecognize

BACKGROUND: Children who are bilingual and have speech sound disorder are likely to be under-referred, possibly due to confusion about typical speech acquisition in bilingual children.
AIMS: To investigate what is known about the impact of bilingualism on children's acquisition of speech in English to facilitate the identification and treatment of bilingual children with speech sound disorder.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A systematic review of studies from the last 50 years was conducted. Studies investigating speech acquisition in bilingual infants and children (where one language was English) we

This overview of three decades of clinical experience with oral therapies complemented by oral devices-vestibular screens (VS) and ISMARs (Innsbruck sensory motor activators and regulators)-tries to put these devices into an oral functional context including postural control of mobile structures both inside and outside the mouth-down to the feet. ISMARs have certain unique features which teach a person not only better postural control of the lower jaw and, hence, hyoid bone and tongue, but also to stimulate movements of lips and tongue to improve salivary control, functions of eating and drink

A number of developmental changes occur in eating patterns from infancy through childhood. Initially a primitive reflexive process, deglutition develops into a complex, integrated voluntary/reflexive process. The movements of the tongue, lips and mandible are easily observed to undergo a transformation from synergistic, undifferentiated movements in the infant, to differentiated and refined movements required for biting, chewing, bolus formation and propulsion in the toddler and young child. This transformation is also crucial for the development of higher levels of articulatory precision and

OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTS: Speech outcomes were described for 16 patients with cleft palate (mean age: 5.4 years) following Sommerlad primary palatoplasty performed by a single surgeon of the Ghent University Hospital. These speech outcomes were compared with those of an age and gender matched control group without cleft palate (mean age: 5.3 years).
METHODS: Speech intelligibility/distinctiveness, resonance, nasal airflow and articulation, were perceptually evaluated. Additionally, nasalance values and the NSI 2.0 were determined.
RESULTS: In seven patients, speech intelligibility/distinctiven

PURPOSE: Children acquire /-z/ syllabic plurals (e.g., bus es) later than /-s, -z/ segmental plurals (e.g., cat s, dog s). In this study, the authors explored whether increased syllable number or segmental factors best explains poorer performance with syllabic plurals.
METHOD: An elicited imitation experiment was conducted with 14 two-year-olds involving 8 familiar disyllabic target plural nouns, half with syllabic plurals (e.g., bus → bus es) and half with segmental plurals (e.g., letter → letter s). Children saw pictures of the target items on a computer and repeated prerecorded 3-word-utte

Although reduced verbal span is well documented in individuals with developmental dyslexia, the existing data on visual-spatial span are inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to ascertain whether the working memory deficit in developmental dyslexia is confined to verbal material or whether it also involves visual-object and visual-spatial information. Results document deficits on span tasks tapping verbal, visual-spatial, and visual-object working memory in dyslexic children and indicate that the working memory deficit in developmental dyslexia is not limited to dysfunction of phonolo

PURPOSE: Evidence-based practice (EBP) involves the incorporation of research evidence, clinical expertise, and client values in clinical decision making. One case in which these factors conflict is the use of nonspeech oral motor treatments (NSOMTs) for children with developmental speech sound disorders. Critical reviews of the research evidence suggest that NSOMTs are not valid, yet they are widely used by clinicians based on their expertise/experience. This investigation presents detailed descriptions of clinicians' and researchers' views and opinions on NSOMTs and EBP.
METHOD: Individual

OBJECTIVE: From an original large sample of 1062 7 to 8-year-old children, reading skills were assessed and found to be highly linked with socioeconomic status (SES). The purpose of the present study was to further determine underlying medical, sociocultural, cognitive and behavioural factors explaining the diversity of reading skills and the influence of SES.
METHOD: Individual testing among low-SES children identified 100 poor readers, 50 typical readers and 31 children with intermediate reading scores. All 3 groups underwent a thorough assessment, including a medical evaluation, a full cog
