Dopamine DRD4 receptor polymorphism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A polymorphism in the dopamine receptor 4 gene (DRD4) has been related to novelty seeking, Tourette's syndrome, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The variability is in a 48-bp repeat in exon 3 of the gene (a transmembrane region). This study examined the relation of the 7-repeat (i.e., high-risk) allele to questionnaire-based diagnoses of ADHD (both combined type and inattentive type). Several positive findings were obtained for ADHD-inattentive type. In an association test, the 7-repeat allele occurred more frequently in children with ADHD-inattentive type than in control c

Bupropion versus methylphenidate in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: In the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the efficacy of the tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants has been compared with that of both placebo and the stimulants (methylphenidate and/or dextroamphetamine). However, the effectiveness of bupropion has been contrasted only with placebo. The primary aim of this study was to contrast the efficacy of bupropion with that of methylphenidate in the treatment of ADHD. METHOD: A double-blind, crossover design was used in this study. After a 14-day medication washout period, 15 AD

Risks of bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, and traumatic brain injury among siblings of patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that the unaffected siblings of patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience deficits in attention, impulsivity control, and behavior inhibition, which are associated with health-risk behaviors. However, risks to mental and physical health among the unaffected siblings of ADHD probands have rarely been investigated. METHODS: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 5128 unaffected siblings of ADHD probands born between 1980 and 2000 were included in our study along with 20,512 age- and sex-matched con

Sleep hygiene and its relation to sleep in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with ADHD often experience sleep problems that exacerbate functional impairment. Sleep hygiene may be particularly challenging in this group. To better understand sleep hygiene practices and their relation to sleep problems in this group, this study compares sleep hygiene across adolescents with ADHD without sleep problems (ADHD-), adolescents with ADHD and co-occurring sleep problems (ADHD+), and non-ADHD peers (NT), and examines group differences in the associations between sleep hygiene and sleep parameters using objective (actigraphy) and subjective (sleep diaries) a

Functioning and mood of older adults with elevated genetic risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Too little is known about the mood and functioning of older adults at elevated risk for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We aimed to examine the clinical characteristics of individuals aged 65 + years with higher polygenic risk scores (PRS) for ADHD. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort of 1471 dementia-free adults with median age 72 years. MEASUREMENTS: We calculated the ADHD-PRS and examined its cross-sectional associations with Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), and individual CDR domains, depression and anxiety scores, individual depression sy

The cerebral neurovascular coupling and glymphatic circulation dysfunction in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Based on the executive dysfunction hypothesis, the deficiency of executive function is the basis of the core symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aims to apply MRI to evaluate changes in neurovascular coupling (NVC) and glymphatic system functions in patients with ADHD and to explore the relationship between these changes and executive function, in order to reveal the potential neural mechanisms underlying ADHD symptomatology. METHODS: This study enrolled sixty-six individuals diagnosed with ADHD and forty-one healthy control participants (HC). W

Informed Consent in Vulnerable Populations: The Case of Detained Persons with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Informed consent (IC) is a critical component in research involving human participants, yet participants' understanding of consent information remains underexplored, particularly in vulnerable populations. This study aimed to assess whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was associated with understanding and willingness to sign the IC among detained individuals. This secondary analysis used data from a randomised trial conducted in a Swiss prison (n = 183). Statistical analyses included regression models. There was no significant difference in understanding of the IC between t

Pregnancy Outcomes in Women Diagnosed With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Population-Based Register Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with various pregnancy outcomes, but the degree to which that association is explained by concomitant mental disorders and smoking during pregnancy remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal ADHD and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Through the Swedish Medical Birth Register, we identified 977,266 women who gave birth to a live singleton between January 1, 2006, and December 1, 2020 (1,617,121 pregnancies). Of these, 1.3% (12,553 women; 17,434 pregnancies) had an ADHD diagnos

Stimulant medication and symptom interrelations in children, adolescents and adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Stimulant medication is effective in alleviating overall symptom severity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet interindividual variability in treatment response and tolerability still exists. While network analysis has identified differences in ADHD symptom relations, the impact of stimulant medication remains unexplored. Increased understanding of this association could provide valuable insights for optimizing treatment approaches for individuals with ADHD. In this study, we compared and characterized ADHD symptom networks (including 18 ADHD symptoms) between stimulant-trea

[Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A systematic review].

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the population is currently 4%. It is usually associated with problems related to executive functions, attention and emotional regulation. Non-invasive brain stimulation, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), may compensate for cognitive impairment, thereby benefiting neuroplasticity and long-term outcomes. AIM: The aim is to find evidence concerning the dual application of tDCS with cognitive stimulation activities in the treatment of ADHD in adults, in relation to attention, executive functi

Prevalence of Enuresis in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Background Enuresis, or bedwetting, is a common condition affecting millions of children worldwide. This can be a source of distress for both children and their families. Children, adolescents, and young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk of developing enuresis. They have difficulties with executive functioning, including impulse control and emotional regulation. These difficulties may contribute to the development of enuresis, as individuals may struggle to recognize the urge to use the bathroom or have difficulty controlling their bladder during sleep. Ob

Case report: Methylphenidate improved chronic pain in an adult patient with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain remains a health problem that is difficult to treat adequately. Its unknown cause and complex comorbidity with other illnesses, including mental disorders, amplify the severity of symptoms, which consequently decreases the quality of life of patients long term. In our clinical practice, we coincidentally found evidence that methylphenidate (MPH) effectively managed chronic pain in an adult patient with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The effectiveness of MPH in the treatment of ADHD is well-established; however, its utility in treating pain remains u

Symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are associated with Hidradenitis suppurativa in Danish blood donors.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with psychiatric comorbidity. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder associated with systemic and skin inflammation such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Whether HS symptoms are associated with ADHD symptoms remains unexplored. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the possible association between HS and ADHD. Participants in the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS) were included in this cross-sectional study during 2015-2017. The participants provided questionnaire data on screenin

Profiling Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Traits in Children with SYNGAP1-Related Intellectual Disability.

SYNGAP1-related ID is a genetic condition characterised by global developmental delay and epilepsy. Individuals with SYNGAP1-related ID also commonly show differences in attention and social communication/interaction and frequently receive additional diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We thus set out to quantify ASD and ADHD symptoms in children with this syndrome. To assess ASD and ADHD, parents and caregivers of a child with SYNGAP1-related ID (N = 34) or a typically developing control (N = 21) completed the Social Responsiveness S
