Raji, a malignant B-lymphocyte cell line containing Epstein-Barr virus genomic elements, has been conditioned to proliferate optimally in transferrin (Tf)-free medium containing a very low concentration of an iron salt. We provide evidence that an Tf-independent iron uptake system is physiologically important for maintaining the growth of these cells. Some recurrent chromosomal abnormalities have recently been found to be associated with distinctive histologic subtypes of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). C3H/HeJ mice are genetically defective in their responsiveness to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A study was undertaken on the immunomodulating properties of pentamidine, a diamidine used in the treatment of African trypanosomiasis, pneumocystosis and leishmaniasis. A prospective clinical, virological and immunological study was performed on 25 consecutive Bell's palsy (BP) patients. Multiple cranial nerve involvement was found in 15 patients. Antisera were prepared in rabbits by immunization with either human peripheral blood T lymphocytes (PTL) or tonsil B lymphocytes (TBL). Specificities of sequentially absorbed antisera were examined by cytotoxicity testing, immunoperoxidase staining and absorption study. Mice of the AKR strain develop T-lymphocyte leukemia originating in the thymus. We found increased numbers of B-lymphocytes and B-lymphocyte-colony forming cells (CFCBL) in the thymus of older AKR mice. Lymphocyte subpopulations in thirty-nine patients with the tropical splenomegaly syndrome (TSS) were studied using the E-rosette, EAC rosette and direct immunofluorescent staining techniques. In the peripheral blood a decrease in the percentage of T-lymphocytes was found which was accompanied by an increase in the percentage and number of B-lymphocytes. BACKGROUND: B lymphocytes play a key role in immunosuppression. This study investigated the prognostic value of B cell subsets in sepsis.
METHODS: Flow cytometry was used to assess peripheral B cell subsets from patients with sepsis on the first and seventh days following admission, as well as 111 healthy controls. The patients were divided into survivors and non-survivors, based on 28-day prognosis.
