Neisseria meningitidis is the causative agent of transmissible sepsis and meningitis in humans. A urogenital pathotype of N. meningitidis as the causative agent of transmissible urethritis in the USA has been recently characterised. This pathotype belongs to clonal complex 11 and has lost capsule production but gained anaerobic growth.

Bacterial meningitis and septicaemia is a global health problem often caused by Neisseria meningitidis. The complement system is the most important aspect of host defence against this pathogen, and the critical interaction between the two is influenced by genetic polymorphisms on both the bacterial and the host side; variations of the meningococcus may lead to increased survival in human sera, whereas humans with complement deficiencies are more susceptible to meningococcal infections. Here we discuss the mechanisms of meningococcal resistance against complement-mediated killing and the influe

In studies of murine infection, the capsule thickness of Cryptococcus neoformans varied depending on the organ. The relative order of thickness was as follows: lung > brain > in vitro isolates. The differences in capsule thickness suggest that there are organ-related differences in the expression of genes responsible for capsule thickness.

Hypervirulent (hvKP) and classical (cKP) strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae are major contributors to serious hospital-acquired infections, and the growing issue of antibiotic resistance highlights the urgent need for new antimicrobial approaches. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of Sarcotoxin II 50, an insect-derived antimicrobial peptide, on K. pneumoniae. Our findings show that Sarcotoxin II 50 exerts potent antibacterial activity by impairing capsular polysaccharide (CPS) production and fimbrial formation, which compromises bacterial adhesion and colonization capacity. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae causes swine erysipelas, an infection characterized by acute septicemia or chronic endocarditis and polyarthritis. Among 17 E. rhusiopathiae serovars, determined based on heat-stable peptidoglycan antigens, serovars 1 and 2 are most commonly associated with the disease; however, the molecular basis for the association between these serovars and virulence is unknown. To search for the genetic region defining serovar 1a (Fujisawa) strain antigenicity, we examined the 15-kb chromosomal region encompassing a putative pathway for polysaccharide biosynthesis, which was p

The re-emergence of tuberculosis in its present-day manifestations - single, multiple and extensive drug-resistant forms and as HIV-TB coinfections - has resulted in renewed research on fundamental questions such as the nature of the organism itself, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the molecular basis of its pathogenesis, definition of the immunological response in animal models and humans, and development of new intervention strategies such as vaccines and drugs. Foremost among these developments has been the precise chemical definition of the complex and distinctive cell wall of M. tuberculosis,

The bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a global issue affecting dairy and beef farms and is of major concern due to the high morbidity and mortality rates in calves, as well as decreased production it causes, resulting in significant economic losses. Mannheimia haemolytica is one of the secondary pathogens associated with BRDC. M. haemolytica is classified into 12 serotypes based on capsular antigens. In addition to the prevalent serotypes A1, A2, and A6, strains belonging to other serotypes also cause respiratory diseases in cattle and other ruminants, necessitating a method for the

BACKGROUND: Mucosal antibodies against capsular polysaccharides offer protection against acquisition and carriage of encapsulated bacteria like Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C. Measurements of salivary antibodies as replacement for blood testing has important (cost-effective) advantages, particular in studies that assess the impact of large-scale vaccination or in populations in which blood sampling is difficult. This study aimed to estimate a threshold for meningococcal IgG salivary antibody levels to discriminate between unprotected and protected vaccinated individuals.

The capsular polysaccharide (CP) produced by Staphylococcus aureus is a virulence factor that allows the organism to evade uptake and killing by host neutrophils. Polyclonal antibodies to the serotype 5 (CP5) and type 8 (CP8) capsular polysaccharides are opsonic and protect mice against experimental bacteremia provoked by encapsulated staphylococci. Thus, passive immunotherapy using CP antibodies has been considered for the prevention or treatment of invasive antibiotic-resistant S. aureus infections. In this report, we generated monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against S. aureus CP5 or CP8. Backb

Neisseria meningitidis remains the leading cause of bacterial meningitis and septicemia worldwide. We describe a case of invasive meningococcal infection caused by serogroup X N. meningitidis with a unique sequence type (ST-7) in China. The strain may have arisen from locally prevalent hypervirulent serogroup A clones by capsular switching events.

The clinical findings, treatment and outcome of suspected clindamycin-associated oesophageal injury in five cats are reported. All cats were treated with one 75 mg clindamycin capsule twice daily (dose range 12-19 mg/kg). Capsules were administered without food or a water bolus. Dysphagia, regurgitation, choking or gagging were seen 3-9 days after starting clindamycin. On oesophagoscopy, three cats had oesophagitis, one of which progressed to stricture formation. Two cats had an oesophageal stricture at first presentation. This is the first report of suspected clindamycin-associated oesophagea

An infant mouse assay system for assessment of protective concentrations of human serum pneumococcal anticapsular antibodies is described. Passive immunization of anticapsular antibodies was evaluated for protection of infant mice challenged with Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 4, 5, 6B, 18C, and 23A, with bacteremia as an end point. Protection was defined as no detectable bacteremia in 70% of mice 48 h after challenge. Type-specific anticapsular concentrations required for protection varied with serotype (</=0.05 to >0.4 microg/mL). Across serotypes, there was no significant correlation

The study revealed that after the intraperitoneal inoculation of spores of B. anthracis strains with different plasmid composition into guinea pigs the active germination of the spores both outside and inside the cells of the host occurred as early as on hour 2 of their interaction with the macroorganism. The further fate of the infective agent and the character of its interaction with peritoneal exudate cells depended on the plasmid composition of the bacilli. Thus, the presence of toxin-formation plasmid PXO1 and capsule-formation plasmid PXO2 in B. anthracis permitted the successful adaptat

Pertussis is a unique infectious disease in that it can be severe and fatal but occurs without fever and other evidence of an inflammatory illness. The authors with others have studied the histopathology of fatal pertussis and also the unique characteristics of severe pertussis in young infants. Histopathologic observations from approximately 100 years ago, and from recent evaluation, indicate that the histopathologic changes of the upper respiratory tract of patients with fatal pertussis are often relatively normal unless there is a secondary bacterial infection. Bordetella pertussis contains

The endodontium and periodontium are closely related and disease of one may lead to secondary disease in the other. The differential diagnosis of endodontic and periodontal disease is of vital importance, so that the appropriate treatment can be done. Microorganisms play a primary role in endodontic and periodontal infections. The magnitude of the host response will be directly proportional to the virulence and the number of microbial cells present. Tissue damage caused by bacteria is mediated by either direct or indirect mechanisms. Direct harmful effects caused by bacteria involve their prod

The outcome of the early stages of a neisserial infection is determined by receptor-mediated events that culminate in the attachment and invasion of human mucosal tissues. The factors participating in this process, including pili, opacity proteins (Opa), and perhaps lipopolysaccharide (LPS), are subject to complex genetic controls that allow these factors to be produced in multiple forms. Antigenic variation allows the pathogenic Neisseriae to evade the human immune response, and facilitates their interaction with a variety of different cells and tissues of the human host. The highly pathogenic bacterium Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of plague, a notorious infectious zoonotic disease. When transmitted from person to person as pneumonic plague via droplets, Y. pestis is highly contagious and in most cases is fatal if left untreated. Thus, when plague is suspected, rapid diagnosis is crucial, as a serious course of the infection is only averted by early antibiotic therapy. The bacterium is easy to cultivate, accessible and has a high potential for nefarious use such as bioterrorism. Highly specific, rapid and easy-to-use confirmatory diagnostic methods ar
