Single-Centre Retrospective Study on the Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Nocturia.

PURPOSE: The incidence of nocturia is increased in obesity, which causes significant negative impact on quality of life. Bariatric surgery is a reliable method in which to achieve major weight loss and this study aims to determine the effect of bariatric surgery on nocturia and other lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men and women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of patients undergoing bariatric surgery had pre- and post-operative questionnaires using the validated International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS) to assess nocturia between 2018 and 2021. The primary outcome was ef

Development of gambling disorder after bariatric surgery: a call for research.

The relationship between bariatric surgery and alcohol use disorder (AUD) suggests that there may be a parallel connection between bariatric surgery and gambling disorder (GD), although this has never been researched before. Here, we describe observations suggesting that patients undergoing bariatric surgery may develop gambling disorders after surgery. Obese, older adults, and women may be at particular risk of developing GD because of their higher susceptibility to somatic comorbidities. We call for research addressing factors affecting the development of GD in patients undergoing bariatric

Eating disorders among bariatric surgery patients: The chicken or the egg?

Postoperative eating behaviors and unhealthy weight control measures are leading causes of bariatric surgery complications. Candidates for bariatric surgery and individuals with eating disorders may share common risk factors, such as a history of dieting, and/or being bullied or teased for their weight. Binge-eating disorder, night eating syndrome, and bulimia nervosa are the most common eating disorders among candidates for bariatric surgery before the operation. Malnutrition, stress, and intense fear of weight gain can lead to the development of an eating disorder after surgery as well. Plug

Urinary incontinence in women who have undergone bariatric surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a known risk factor for urinary incontinence (UI). As bariatric surgery can result in significant and sustainable weight loss, many chronic diseases closely linked to obesity have likewise shown improvement after surgical weight loss. We propose that bariatric surgery may significantly improve obesity-related UI symptoms as well as improve quality of life. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This is an interim analysis of an ongoing, prospective, single-institution observational study looking at UI in women enrolled in a bariatric surgery program. Participants completed the Pelvi

Factors contributing to whether or not people with obesity undergo bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery has been suggested as a safe and effective way to treat obesity by facilitating weight loss, but factors that predict the likelihood of bariatric surgery are unknown. The objective of this study was to describe factors associated with individuals with obesity that influence their decision to undergo bariatric surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study design was a cross-sectional study and participants were recruited via a survey link posted on the Obesity Action Coalition website. Demographic data, medical data, weight loss program data, and reports of personal ex

Surgical complications in pregnancy after bariatric surgery; a case series.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a rising world-wide problem and bariatric surgery, also in the reproductive age, is increasingly performed. Bariatric procedures are associated with surgical complications during pregnancy, such as internal herniation. CASES: In this case series three cases with severe surgical complications after Roux-Y gastric bypass are described. In all three cases surgery was needed to prevent further complications. In one case subtotal bowel resection had to be performed because of extensive necrosis and intra-uterine fetal death was found. CONCLUSION: Though surgical complicatio

Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in Patients with Situs Inversus: a Systematic Review.

Laparoscopic surgery in patients with obesity with situs inversus (SI) may pose interesting challenges to diagnosing and managing due to the mirror image anatomy. Since in SI patient's organs are displaced, the surgery requires high levels of precision and hand-eye coordination. SI and bariatric surgery may pose challenges for the surgical team. A total of 46 patients were reported in this systematic review. The mean age of cases was ~39 years (range 19-59), and the mean BMI was 45.9 kg/m2 (range 35-76). Of the included 46 patients, 39 had SIT. In the majority of the included patients, either

Nutritional deficiency in South African adults scheduled for bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Globally, there is a rising trend in obesity, known to increase morbidity and mortality. Metabolic surgery and adequate weight loss decrease mortality but may worsen pre-existing nutrient deficiencies. Most data on pre-existing nutritional deficiencies in the population undergoing metabolic surgery is from the developed world, where an extensive micronutrient assessment is achievable. In resource-constrained environments, the cost of a comprehensive micronutrient assessment must be weighed against the prevalence of nutritional deficiencies and the potential harm if one or more nutr

Dynamic Evaluation of Vitamin D Metabolism in Post-Bariatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: findings from the previously conducted studies indicate altered regulatory mechanisms of calcium and vitamin D metabolism in obese patients and a role for bariatric surgery in regulating vitamin D metabolism; however, the available data is controversial and does not provide an adequate understanding of the subject. METHODS: we evaluated serum parameters of vitamin D and mineral metabolism (vitamin D metabolites (25(OH)D3, 25(OH)D2, 1,25(OH)2D3, 3-epi-25(OH)D3, and 24,25(OH)2D3), vitamin D-binding protein (DBP), free 25(OH)D, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), parathyroid hormon

Bariatric Surgery in Migraine patients: CGRP Level and Weight Loss.

BACKGROUND: Obesity makes migraine more prevalent and severe. Serum level of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is associated with the severity of migraine attacks. Although the effect of weight and bariatric surgery has been studied on migraine, the role of CGRP in migraine remission after weight loss surgery needs more investigation. METHODS: Patients with severe obesity who were bariatric surgery candidates and had been diagnosed with chronic migraine were included in this study. Weight, BMI, number of days with headache in the past 3 months, and severity of headaches in 10-point Liker

Endoscopic Gastric Plication: A Flexible and Tailored Alternative to Bariatric Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic procedures are expanding and have been evolving in recent years, increasing their volume along with the development of new devices. This is due to the low morbidity and complication rate, the reversibility of the procedures, and the positive impact on patients. Among the endoscopic procedures gaining interest is sleeve gastroplasty. It emerged as a feasible and safe alternative to traditional bariatric surgery. There are no guidelines available on the indications and use of endoscopic gastroplasty. The aim of this study is to present preliminary results of a case serie

BONE HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF ELDERLY PATIENTS UNDERGOING BARIATRIC SURGERY.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery promotes changes in body composition, that can include the loss of bone mineral density (BMD). There is a lack of studies on the evolution of bone health of elderly people who underwent bariatric surgery, in general, and when comparing the gastric bypass (GB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) techniques. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the bone health of elderly patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. METHODS: This is a prospective randomized clinical study, that was carried out with individuals of both sexes, ≥65 years, undergoing GB or SG and who met the inclusio

Involvement of Helicobacter pylori in Preoperative Gastric Findings on a Bariatric Population.

The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in bariatric patients is common and related to gastric pathology. With preoperative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGE), these pathologies and the presence of Hp are diagnosed. The histopathological study of the UGE biopsies is classified based on the Sydney System, a scoring system that stages chronic gastritis (CG) and precancerous gastric lesions. The objective is to assess the histological findings of gastric biopsies during routine UGE and to determine the involvement of Hp in gastric disorders in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. [Nutritionnal complications and patients follow-up after bariatric surgery].

NUTRITIONNAL COMPLICATIONS AND PATIENTS FOLLOW-UP AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERYBariatric surgery is the most consistently effective method for sustained weight reduction and can result in a substantial improvement in overall survival in patients with severe obesity. Complex mechanisms underlying metabolic benefits could also drive preventable, but potentially life-threatening, long-term nutritional complications. Consequently, physicians should be familiar with the lifelong monitoring of patients after bariatric surgery and the potential long-term complications in this paradoxical situation where th

THE INTESTINAL MICROBIOME IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING BARIATRIC SURGERY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW.

BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota is frequently found in cases of obesity and related metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. The composition of the microbiota in diabetics is similar to that of obese people, thereby causing increased energy uptake efficiency in the large intestine of obese people, maintenance of a systemic inflammatory state, and increased insulin resistance. Bariatric surgery seems to entail an improvement in gut dysbiosis, leading to an increased diversity of the gut microbiota. AIMS: This study aimed to present a literature review on obesity-associ
