Cardiac arrhythmias in pregnancy: clinical and therapeutic considerations.

Pregnancy can precipitate cardiac arrhythmias not previously present in seemingly well individuals. Risk of arrhythmias is relatively higher during labor and delivery. Potential factors that can promote arrhythmias in pregnancy and during labor and delivery include the direct cardiac electrophysiological effects of hormones, changes in autonomic tone, hemodynamic perturbations, hypokalemia of pregnancy, and underlying heart disease. Paroxysmal supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia may cause hemodynamic compromise with consequences to the fetus. Management of arrhythmias in pregnant wome

Cortical activity in tinnitus patients and its modification by phonostimulation.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to observe spontaneous cortical activity and cortical activity modulated by tinnitus-matched sound in tinnitus patients and healthy subjects with no otoneurologic symptoms. METHOD: Data were prospectively collected from 50 tinnitus patients and 25 healthy subjects. Cortical activity was recorded in all subjects with eyes closed and open and during photostimulation, hyperventilation and acoustic stimulation using 19-channel quantitative electroencephalography. The sound applied in the tinnitus patients was individually matched with the ability to mask or e

Pharmacologically induced and stimulus evoked rhythmic neuronal oscillatory activity in the primary motor cortex in vitro.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with enhanced synchronization of neuronal network activity in the beta (15-30 Hz) frequency band across several nuclei of the basal ganglia (BG). Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) appears to reduce this pathological oscillation, thereby alleviating PD symptoms. However, direct stimulation of primary motor cortex (M1) has recently been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms in PD, suggesting a role for cortex in patterning pathological rhythms. Here, we examine the properties of M1 network oscillations in coronal slices taken from

Explore the Functional Connectivity between Brain Regions during a Chemistry Working Memory Task.

Previous studies have rarely examined how temporal dynamic patterns, event-related coherence, and phase-locking are related to each other. This study assessed reaction-time-sorted spectral perturbation and event-related spectral perturbation in order to examine the temporal dynamic patterns in the frontal midline (F), central parietal (CP), and occipital (O) regions during a chemistry working memory task at theta, alpha, and beta frequencies. Furthermore, the functional connectivity between F-CP, CP-O, and F-O were assessed by component event-related coherence (ERCoh) and component phase-locki

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder: an EEG analysis.

This study investigated EEG differences between two groups of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder combined type (ADHD), with or without comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and normal control subjects. Each group consisted of 20 males. All subjects were between the ages of 8 and 12 years, and groups were matched on age. EEG was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition from 21 monopolar derivations, which were clustered into nine regions for analysis. The EEGs were Fourier transformed to provide absolute and relative power estimates for the delta, theta, alph

Atrial fibrillation in cardiac surgery.

Atrial fibrillation is the most frequent arrhythmia in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery. It is associated with heart failure, renal insufficiency, systemic embolism and increase in days of in-hospital and mortality. Atrial fibrillation in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery (FAPCC) usually appears in the first 48 h after surgery. The main mechanisms involved in the appearance and maintenance of FAPCC are the increase in sympathetic tone and the inflammatory response. The associated risk factors are advanced age, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease,

Expression and regulation of Icer mRNA in the Syrian hamster pineal gland.

Inducible-cAMP early repressor (ICER) is a potent inhibitor of CRE (cAMP-related element)-driven gene transcription. In the rat pineal gland, it has been proposed to be part of the mechanisms involved in the shutting down of the transcription of the gene coding for arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT, the melatonin rhythm-generating enzyme). In this study, we report that ICER is expressed in the pineal gland of the photoperiodic rodent Syrian hamster although with some difference compared to the rat. In the Syrian hamster pineal, Icer mRNA levels, low at daytime, displayed a 20-fold inc

Shift in motor-state equilibrium explains gait therapy effects of apomorphine in experimental Parkinsonism.

Gait impairments remain a major therapeutic challenge in Parkinson's disease (PD). Apomorphine is gaining renewed clinical attention with the expanding use of pump infusion systems. Yet the specific role of apomorphine on the neural regulation of gait has remained poorly characterized, limiting its targeted use for symptom-specific therapy in PD. Here, we examined the neurobehavioral effects of apomorphine on runway locomotion in the unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) rat model. Therapeutic drug doses significantly increased total walking distance, related to reduced akinesia and prolonged

A Comparison of Rate Control Agents for the Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation: Follow-Up Investigation of the AFFIRM Study.

There are limited data from randomized controlled trials comparing rate control agents in atrial fibrillation. Patient-level data from the Atrial Fibrillation Follow-up Investigation of Rhythm Management (AFFIRM) trial was used to compare outcomes in patients randomized to the rate control arm who were treated with a single rate control agent at baseline. The rate control agents used were beta-blockers, non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, and digoxin. The independent variable for this analysis was the initial study drug used and the dependent variables were time to first hospitalizat

Voluntary tic suppression and the normalization of motor cortical beta power in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: an EEG study.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a neurological condition characterized by motor and vocal tics. Previous studies suggested that this syndrome is associated with abnormal sensorimotor cortex activity at rest, as well as during the execution of voluntary movements. It has been hypothesized that this abnormality might be interpreted as a form of increased tonic inhibition, probably to suppress tics; however, this hypothesis has not been tested so far. The present study was designed to formally test how voluntary tic suppression in GTS influences the activity of the sensorimotor cortex dur

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation modulates tinnitus-related beta- and gamma-band activity.

OBJECTIVES: The ability of a treatment method to interfere with tinnitus-related neural activity patterns, such as cortical gamma rhythms, has been suggested to indicate its potential in relieving tinnitus. Therapeutic modulation of gamma-band oscillations with vagus nerve stimulation has been recently reported in epileptic patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) on neural oscillatory patterns. DESIGN: We calculated the power spectral density and synchrony of magnetoencephalography recordings during auditory stimulation i

Pathogenetic role, in human and murine tuberculosis, of changes in the peripheral metabolism of glucocorticoids and antiglucocorticoids.

Immunity to tuberculosis (TB) requires a Th1 pattern of cytokine release, dominated by interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon gamma (IFN gamma). In experimental models even a minor Th2 component (characterized by production of IL-4) abrogates immunity, and leads to an immunopathology that mimics the human disease. Increased exposure of T cells to glucocorticoids drives them towards a Th2 cytokine profile and could therefore help to explain the presence of an inappropriate Th2 component in TB. Analysis of adrenal steroid metabolites in 24-h urine collections revealed a striking increase in metabol

The EEG of mildly retarded children: developmental, classificatory, and topographic aspects.

Our investigation was concerned with 25 children, 10-13 years old, with an IQ 50-70 ("mild mental retardation," following the ICD). Among these, 14 attended a school for the mentally retarded and 11 one for the learning disabled. A control group was recruited, matched in age, sex and social class. The unipolar 8-channel record of EEG at rest was subjected to blind clinical rating, and a computerized analysis (broad band spectral parameters delta, theta, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1, beta 2). A significantly higher frequency of paroxysms was found by the clinical rating. It also allowed the diagnos

[Aqueous humor dynamics].

Intraocular pressure is mainly controlled by the rate of aqueous humor production and the resistance to its outflow. Aqueous humor formation is the result of fast unidirectional secretion and slow contradirectional reabsorption. The most striking evidence of endogenous regulation of the ciliary epithelial secretion is provided by the observation of the circadian rhythm. Aqueous humor formation is mainly controlled by the interaction of inhibiting alpha(2)-adrenoreceptors and stimulating beta-adrenoceptors. The role of the central nervous system in the regulation of this process remains unclear

[Cascade of biochemical events triggered by stimulation of adrenergic receptors in the rat pineal gland--from cell membrane to nucleus].

Pineal glands of various vertebrate species synthesize melatonin in a circadian rhythm generated by an endogenous pacemaker. The levels of melatonin and activity of serotonin N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT: a penultimate and key regulatory enzyme in melatonin biosynthesis) are low during the light phase and high during the dark phase of any natural or imposed light-dark illumination cycle. The expression of AA-NAT gene in rat pineal gland is regulated by a photoneural system that acts through the adrenergic-cAMP-related mechanisms in pinealocytes. Concomitant stimulation by noradrenaline of beta

Dysfunctional hemispheric asymmetry of theta and beta EEG activity during linguistic tasks in developmental dyslexia.

The phonological deficit hypothesis of dyslexia was studied by analyzing language-related lateralization of theta (4-8 Hz) and beta rhythms (13-30 Hz) during various phases of word processing in a sample of 14 dyslexics and 28 controls. Using a word-pair paradigm, the same words were contrasted in three different tasks: Phonological, Semantic and Orthographic. Compared with controls, dyslexic children showed a delay in behavioral responses which was paralleled by sustained theta EEG peak activity. In addition, controls showed greater theta and beta activation at left frontal sites specifically…
