Autonomic Nervous System Response to Psychosocial Stress in Anorexia Nervosa: A Cross-Sectional and Controlled Study.

To foster understanding in the psychopathology of patients with anorexia nervosa (PAN) at the psychological and physiological level, standardized experimental studies on reliable biomarkers are needed, especially due to the lack of disorder-specific samples. To this end, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) response to a psychosocial stressor was investigated in n = 19 PAN (BMI: 18.7 ± 3.3 kg/m2), age, and gender-matched to n = 19 healthy controls (HC; BMI: 24.23 ± 3.0 kg/m2). For this purpose, heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters were assessed in a cross-sectional study d

"Scratching" beneath the surface: an integrative psychosocial approach to pediatric pruritus and pain.

Pruritus is prevalent in children with atopic dermatitis and associated with effects on mood, quality of life, sleep, scholastic performance, social and family functioning. In this study a 7-year-old African American female with severe atopic dermatitis, itching and pain refractory to multiple systemic and topical medications was referred for treatment. At baseline, the patient scratched to the point of bleeding, despite maximal doses of anti-histamines, antidepressant and topical therapies. The patient became progressively shy, anxious, and her scholastic performance suffered. A literature re

Interventions for fatigue management after traumatic brain injury.

RATIONALE: Despite the high prevalence and medico-social significance of fatigue in post-traumatic brain injury (post-TBI) populations, there are no validated management strategies to control this condition. It is timely to provide clinicians and patients with the best available evidence of the efficacy of current pharmacological and non-pharmacological fatigue management practices. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue in people who have experienced a TBI. SEARCH METHODS: For this review, we searched the Cochrane Central

Clinical and psychological adjustment to prosthesis use in lower-limb amputees: focus on differences between traditional and high-technology rehabilitation.

Introduction: Advanced rehabilitation technologies are increasingly being implemented in transtibial amputation, although evidence remains limited regarding whether non-immersive virtual reality systems and biofeedback provide additional benefits beyond conventional rehabilitation approaches. Methods: This prospective randomized clinical trial included 21 male patients (mean age 61.7 ± 7.21 years) with transtibial amputation due to vascular disease or type 2 diabetes. Eleven participants received traditional rehabilitation, while ten underwent a combined protocol integrating conventional physi

Evaluation of mindfulness-based interventions for pain, anxiety, and depression in spinal cord injury patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Rehabilitative measures following spinal cord injury (SCI) typically fail to mitigate the psychological symptoms that might heighten pain levels. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been proposed to address such concerns. We aim to review the literature on MBI used for pain, anxiety, and depression in SCI. METHODS: A systematic literature search for studies using MBI in patients with pain and psychological symptoms following SCI was conducted. Primary outcomes were pain, assessed by Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPR) and Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), anxiety, and depression, asse

Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ for low back pain: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ for Chronic Low Back Pain. BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a major cause of disability. Research shows that people with cLBP over activate the abdominal and superficial paraspinal muscles and this may indicate an underlying pattern of antagonistic flexor-extensor tone. This study was designed test a new intervention for cLBP, Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ (CMT). CMT integrates biomechanical training to improve postural tone with psychological techniques for pain management. METHODS: The CMT intervention included five components: Understanding

Feasibility and efficacy of an at-home, smart-device aided mindfulness program in people with Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease with a high prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Mindfulness is a practice that encourages individuals to cultivate a present-focused, acceptance-based approach for managing psychological distress. Its positive effect on MS has been demonstrated, but learning such technique is expensive and time-consuming. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of an 8-week, at-home, smart-device aided mindfulness program in a cohort of MS patients. Specifically, we explored the role of a brain-sensing headband providing real-tim

Evaluation of a psychological treatment package for treating pain in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

We examined the utility of psychological treatment procedures for children with high levels of pain associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). By the use of a multiple baseline across subjects design, four children were assigned to an immediate treatment group, and four children to a delayed treatment group. The six-session treatment included relaxation training, electromyogram, and thermal biofeedback for the child; mothers were trained in the use of behavioral techniques for managing physical therapy and school attendance. Visual inspection of the data indicates small changes on ch

Gait Biomechanics with Portable EMG Biofeedback at Increasing Muscle-Activation Goals: Walking Speed, Propulsion, Braking, and Step Length.

Portable electromyography biofeedback (EMG-BFB) may support gait rehabilitation, but whole-gait responses across increasing portable auditory feedback goals are unclear. Twenty-four adults completed baseline treadmill walking and four counterbalanced right medial gastrocnemius activation-goal conditions set at 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% above baseline; 23 contributed primary biomechanical data. Treadmill speed was adjusted within each condition to support achievement of the activation goal. Outcomes included walking speed, ground-reaction forces, force-time metrics, step length, temporal measures,

Respiratory-swallow training in Parkinson's disease: Effects of a single session on swallowing safety and efficiency with exploratory comparisons of biofeedback.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia and pulmonary aspiration are common in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) and has detrimental effects on health, quality of life, and survivorship. One mechanism underlying dysphagia in PwPD is impaired respiratory-swallow coordination, with Respiratory-Swallow Training (RST) emerging as a promising new therapy. The aims of this randomized clinical trial were to assess whether a single session of RST targeting pre- and post-swallow exhalations would improve swallowing safety (primary aim 1) and efficiency (primary aim 2) in PwPD, and to explore whether RST with versus wi

Effect of a slow-paced breathing with heart rate variability biofeedback intervention on pro-inflammatory cytokines in individuals with panic disorder - A randomized controlled trial.

A generalized proinflammatory state has been observed in individuals with panic disorder (PD). There is evidence that slow-paced breathing (SPB) with heart rate variability-biofeedback (HRV-BF) strengthens the nervus vagus with its anti-inflammatory pathway. Therefore, with this randomized controlled trial we aimed to investigate the effect of a four-week SPB with HRV-BF intervention on pro-inflammatory cytokines in people with PD. Fifty-five individuals with PD (mean age: 37.22 ± 15.13 years) were randomly allocated either to SPB-HRV-BF (intervention group) or to HRV-Sham-BF (active control g

Biofeedback therapy for children: What is the maximum number of sessions we should offer?

BACKGROUND: Biofeedback therapy is an effective but resource intensive treatment for pediatric dysfunctional voiding. Based on our center's experience, we evaluated the rate of clinical improvement from biofeedback in order to identify the maximum number of sessions to offer patients. METHODS: We reviewed 490 pediatric patients who underwent at least 6 sessions of biofeedback from 2013 to 2021. At each session, patients and their parents documented their urinary symptoms (urgency, frequency, pain, and difficulties with stream), incontinence, medications, and stool pattern. This longitudinal d

Salzburg Visual Field Trainer (SVFT): A virtual reality device for (the evaluation of) neuropsychological rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: "Visual Restitution Therapies" (VRT) claim to ameliorate visual field defects of neurological patients by repeated visual light stimulation, leading to training-related neuroplasticity and resulting in reconnection of lesioned neurons in early cortical areas. Because existing systems are stationary, uncomfortable, and unreliable, we developed a training instrument based on virtual reality goggles. The goal of the "Salzburg Visual Field Trainer" (SVFT) is twofold: (1) The device facilitates the clinical evaluation of established neuropsychological rehabilitation approaches, such as V

Systematic review of ultrasound visual biofeedback in intervention for speech sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: As cost and access barriers to ultrasound technology have decreased, interest in using ultrasound visual biofeedback (U-VBF) as a tool for remediating speech sound disorders (SSD) has increased. A growing body of research has investigated U-VBF in intervention for developmental SSD; however, diversity in study design, participant characteristics, clinical methods and outcomes complicate the interpretation of this literature. Thus, there is a need for a synthesis and review of the evidence base for using U-VBF in intervention for SSD. AIMS: To synthesise and evaluate the research e

Feedback-Based Treatments for Eating Disorders and Related Symptoms: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

The effectiveness of biofeedback and neurofeedback has been investigated in a range of psychiatric disorders. However, to date, there are few studies on the clinical usefulness of feedback-based techniques for eating disorders (EDs) and EDs-related symptoms (e.g., food craving). A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus and PsychINFO identified 162 articles. Among these, thirteen studies exploring the therapeutic use of biofeedback and neurofeedback in EDs or EDs-related symptoms were included. Biofeedback and neurofeedback were implemented respectively in five and eight of all reviewed articles.
