Comparison of the effects of six-week time-restricted eating on weight loss, body composition, and visceral fat in overweight older men and women.

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a six-week time-restricted eating (TRE) intervention in reducing body weight, fat loss, and visceral fat in overweight, older adult men and women (age range = 65-74 years). Another objective was to determine the feasibility of widespread use of TRE in older women and men. The study randomly assigned 116 healthy, non-smoking participants to one of two conditions: TRE or educational control participants. Participants in the TRE group were instructed to not consume calorie containing beverages or food for 16 h per day, from 8:00 pm to 12

Trajectories of the relationships of physical activity with body composition changes in older men: the MrOS study.

BACKGROUND: Excess adiposity gains and significant lean mass loss may be risk factors for chronic disease in old age. Long-term patterns of change in physical activity (PA) and their influence on body composition decline during aging has not been characterized. We evaluated the interrelationships of PA and body composition at the outset and over longitudinal follow-up to changes in older men. METHODS: Self-reported PA by the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), clinic body weight, and whole-body lean mass (LM) and fat mass, by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), were assessed i

Pharmacological actions of the peptide hormone amylin in the long-term regulation of food intake, food preference, and body weight.

The ability of amylin to reduce acute food intake in rodents is well established. Longer-term administration in rats (up to 24 days) shows a concomitant reduction in body weight, suggesting energy intake plays a significant role in mediating amylin-induced weight loss. The current set of experiments further explores the long-term effects of amylin (4-11 wk) on food preference, energy expenditure, and body weight and composition. Furthermore, we describe the acute effect of amylin on locomotor activity and kaolin consumption to test for possible nonhomeostatic mechanisms that could affect food

Prenatal weight and regional body composition trajectories and neonatal body composition: The NICHD Foetal Growth Studies.

BACKGROUND: Gestational weight gain (GWG) and anthropometric trajectories may affect foetal programming and are potentially modifiable. OBJECTIVES: To assess concomitant patterns of change in weight, circumferences and adiposity across gestation as an integrated prenatal exposure, and determine how they relate to neonatal body composition. METHODS: Data are from a prospective cohort of singleton pregnancies (n = 2182) enrolled in United States perinatal centres, 2009-2013. Overall and by prepregnancy BMI group (overweight/obesity and healthy weight), joint latent trajectory models were fit w

Antioxidant Defense System after Single and Chronic Administration of Obestatin and Its Fragment (1-4) to Normal and Overweight Male Rats.

We studied the effects of anorectic peptide obestatin and its fragment (1-4) on the antioxidant defense system in animals with normal and experimentally induced increased body weight. In rats with normal body weight, no changes in activity of the antioxidant defense system 1 week after single administration of the substances. After chronic administration of obestatin and fragment (1-4) for 1 week, total antioxidant capacity of the plasma decreased; obestatin also lowered the content of TBA-reactive products. In the overweight rats, SOD-like activity in the plasma increased 1 week after chronic

The impact of nutrition on physiologic changes in persons who have HIV.

HIV affects almost all bodily systems, which can lead to recurrent opportunistic infections, weight loss, distribution of weight changes, and death. Malnutrition and wasting, two symptoms that interfere with nutrient availability, accessibility, and metabolism, are associated with higher morbidity and mortality. Nausea, vomiting, swallowing or chewing difficulties, or the response of the body to opportunistic infections or medications that are considered vital to the treatment of the disease may affect nutritional status. A positive nutritional balance may help to improve the immune and other

Potentiating effects of cisplatin and ethacrynic acid in ototoxicity.

Seven milligrams per kilogram of body weight of cisplatin and 50 mg/kg of body weight of ethacrynic acid were given intravenously to guinea pigs. The threshold for Preyer's reflex, the cochlear microphonics (CM), and the endocochlear dc potential (EP) were measured during a four-day period after the injection. The changes in Preyer's reflex audiometry and the CM were more severe than that of the EP. These changes are greater than those that occur with the administration of each agent independently. The ototoxic interaction seemingly has a greater effect on the hair cells than on the stria vasc

Changes in dermal structure and skin oxidative stress in overweight and obese Japanese males after weight loss: a longitudinal observation study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported decreased dermal echogenicity and increased skin oxidative stress in overweight males. However, it is unknown whether these skin parameters of overweight and obese people are similar to those of individuals exhibiting a normal body weight following weight loss. The purpose of this study was to (1) compare the changes in the dermal structure parameters and levels of skin oxidative stress before and after weight loss in overweight and obese people in Japan and (2) to clarify how these aspects changed when body weight would be reduced to normal b

Nonosmotic secretion of arginine vasopressin and salt loss in hyponatremia in Kawasaki disease.

BACKGROUND: The precise mechanism of hyponatremia in Kawasaki disease (KD) remains elusive because assessment of volume status based on serial changes in body weight is lacking in previous reports. METHODS: Seventeen patients who were diagnosed with KD and hyponatremia (serum sodium levels <135 mmol/L) were analyzed. Volume status was assessed based on serial changes in body weight. Plasma arginine vasopressin (ADH), urine electrolytes, and serum cytokine levels were measured on diagnosis of hyponatremia. An increase in body weight by >3% was defined as hypervolemia and a decrease in body wei

Food intake changes across the menstrual cycle in Taiwanese women.

BACKGROUND: Studies in Western countries have suggested that there are relationships among sex hormones, the neuropeptide leptin, women's food intake, and body weight changes across the menstrual cycle. However, data on this question are needed from other cultural groups. OBJECTIVES: To compare total food and macronutrient intake and serum estrogen, progesterone, and leptin levels in Taiwanese women of varying body size during three menstrual cycle phases. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a sample of 39 healthy Taiwanese women (aged 20-40 years) with regular menstrual cyc…

Effects of rapid weight loss and rapid weight regain on oxidant status and muscle damage in judo athletes.

BACKGROUND: Athletes in weight-class sports frequently use rapid weight loss (RWL) before the official weigh-in to compete in a lower weight category and potentially gain a competitive advantage. After the weigh-in, rapid weight regain (RWG) is commonly applied to restore body mass before competition. However, repeated weight cycling may impair physiological functions, including redox homeostasis and muscle integrity. This study investigated the effects of RWL and subsequent RWG on oxidative stress and muscle damage markers in male judo athletes. METHODS: Eleven male judo athletes (20.8 ± 0.8

Brain damage and recovery in hyperphenylalaninemic rats.

Rats were made hyperphenylalaninemic by injecting a mixture of alpha-methylphenylalanine and phenylalanine. Brain development was measured by biochemical, histological and 31-P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. In 17-day-old hyperphenylalaninemic rats, brain myelinogenesis was disturbed. Compared to controls, test animals had lower body weights, brain weights, cerebrosides, sulfatides, myelin basic protein (MBP) and reduced cerebroside sulfotransferase (CST) and 2'3'-cyclic nucleotide-3'-phosphohydrolase (CNP) activities. No changes were found in total proteins, total lipids, total pho

Weight change and appetite disturbance as symptoms of adolescent depression: toward an integrative biopsychosocial model.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [American Psychiatric Association. (1994). Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (4th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.] lists weight change and appetite disturbance as a single compound symptom of depression at all ages. Nonetheless, assessment of these symptoms is complicated during adolescence by normative increases in body weight and appetitive drive as well as heightened rates of body dissatisfaction, dieting, and eating disorders. This review outlines biological and psychological mechanisms that may change the relation

Longitudinal changes in body composition and diet after acute spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with low muscle mass and adiposity, however, to our knowledge, few studies have monitored the trajectory of changes over time. This study aimed to evaluate the timing, rate, magnitude, and site-specific changes in body composition and related changes in diet after SCI. METHODS: We assessed 39 patients with SCI. The analysis included five women. Of the participants, 51% had American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) criteria A/B (motor complete) injuries, 18% had AIS C (sensory/motor incomplete) injuries, and 31% had AIS D (motor

Systemic effects of cigarette smoke exposure in the guinea pig.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with systemic effects including reduced body weight, oxidative stress and altered circulating TNFalpha levels. The present study was aimed to investigate whether chronic exposure to cigarette smoke induces these systemic changes in a guinea pig model. Seven animals/group were exposed to the smoke of seven cigarettes/day, 5 days/week, during 2, 4 and 6 months (chronic exposure). Three animals/group were sacrificed immediately, 3 h or 24 h after exposure to seven cigarettes (acute exposure). Chronically smoke-exposed animals exhibited lower bod

[Etiological and exacerbation factors for COPD. Body weight loss].

Hunger or malnutrition is not only a historical issue but also a current problem worldwide. Biological responses to hunger are evolutionary prepared in our body, including energy generation by degradation of body proteins. Extreme weight loss (malnutrition) can cause air space enlargement in human and rodents. However, the changes in rodents could be reversible, since refeeding could repair the pathology. On the other hand, weight loss is a common feature in patients with more severe COPD. Complex factors, such as increased energy consumption, decreased food uptake by low grade inflammation, s

Biological Pathways of Strength Preservation During Calorie Restriction-Induced Weight Loss Among Adults Without Obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Weight loss is often pursued to improve cardiometabolic health and quality of life. However, weight loss can lead to reductions in lean soft tissue mass and strength, compromising body composition and functional ability. Thus, identifying molecular predictors of muscular strength preservation during weight loss is critical to mitigating these effects. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the CALERIE trial, a 2-year randomized controlled study of caloric restriction or ad libitum intake in healthy adults without obesity. Changes in whole-body mass and knee extensor strength
