A Review of Plant-Based Diets for Obesity Management.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is the most prevalent chronic disease in the United States with over 70% of the American population suffering from overweight/obesity. Recently, the popularity of plant-based diets (PBDs) has grown, with individuals adopting these diets for ethical, health and environmental reasons. Our aim is to evaluate the effect of a PBD on weight loss among patients who are overweight or obese. METHODS: A literature review of PBDs for the treatment of obesity was conducted using PubMed and Scopus. Our search yielded 27 intervention trials (3361 participants) and 6 metanalyses (9168 par

Reducing breast cancer recurrence with weight loss, a vanguard trial: the Exercise and Nutrition to Enhance Recovery and Good Health for You (ENERGY) Trial.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer among women in developed countries. Obesity is a major risk factor for breast cancer recurrence and mortality in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Co-morbid medical conditions are common among breast cancer survivors. The Exercise and Nutrition to Enhance Recovery and Good Health for You (ENERGY) study is a 4-year randomized clinical trial of 693 overweight/obese women aged ≥21years diagnosed with any early stage breast cancer (stages I[≥1cm]-III) within the previous five years, designed to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving sustained we

Long-Term Outcomes of Pylorus-Preserving Gastrectomy for Early Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND: In the short term, pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG) has been reported to have advantages over distal gastrectomy (DG) with regard to postprandial symptoms and dumping syndrome. We aimed to evaluate the quality of life after PPG for early gastric cancer in the long term in comparison to that after DG. METHODS: Twenty-six patients who underwent gastrectomy (11 PPG, 15 DG) for early gastric cancer at Osaka University Hospital participated and were followed for more than 4 years. Body weight changes, nutritional status, dual-phase scintigraphy findings, endoscopic survey results,

Does Weight Loss Translate to Workplace Gains? Results of an Employment Questionnaire in Adults With Prediabetes and Overweight or Obesity.

AIMS: Excess weight is associated with adverse health and economic disadvantage. Observational studies suggest that people with obesity are less likely to be employed and have lower income, potentially from workplace discrimination. This study examined whether weight loss achieved through a structured, dietitian-supported program improved financial outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An employment questionnaire was embedded within a clinical trial conducted between 2015 and 2019, investigating the effect of dietary supplements on metabolic health in otherwise healthy adults with prediabetes and

Pharmacometric modeling of drug adverse effects: an application of mixture models in schizophrenia spectrum disorder patients treated with clozapine.

Clozapine has superior efficacy to other antipsychotics yet is underutilized due to its adverse effects, such as neutropenia, weight gain, and tachycardia. The current investigation aimed to introduce a pharmacometric approach to simultaneously model drug adverse effects, with examples from schizophrenia spectrum patients receiving clozapine. The adverse drug effects were represented as a function of time by incorporating a mixture model to describe individual susceptibility to the adverse effects. Applications of the proposed method were presented by analyzing retrospective data from patients

Prevention of Burn-Induced Inflammatory Responses and Muscle Wasting by GTS-21, a Specific Agonist for α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle wasting (MW) in catabolic conditions (e.g., burn injury [BI]) is a major risk factor affecting prognosis. Activation of interleukin-1β (IL-1β)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), interleukin-6 (IL-6)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), and/or forkhead box O transcriptional factor (FOXO)-mediated gene transcription pathways is the pivotal trigger of inflammatory response-induced protein catabolic processes in muscle. The α7 acetylcholine receptors (α7AChRs) are upregulated in macrophages and peripheral tissues including skeletal muscle during MW conditio

Blood volume-monitored regulation of ultrafiltration in fluid-overloaded hemodialysis patients: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Data generated with the body composition monitor (BCM, Fresenius) show, based on bioimpedance technology, that chronic fluid overload in hemodialysis patients is associated with poor survival. However, removing excess fluid by lowering dry weight can be accompanied by intradialytic and postdialytic complications. Here, we aim at testing the hypothesis that, in comparison to conventional hemodialysis, blood volume-monitored regulation of ultrafiltration and dialysate conductivity (UCR) and/or regulation of ultrafiltration and temperature (UTR) will decrease complications when ultraf

Postpartum Care and Contraception in Obese Women.

Postpartum obese women have an increased risk of breastfeeding difficulties and depression. Retaining the pregnancy weight at 6 months postpartum predicts long-term obesity. Risks for weight retention include excessive gestational weight gain, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, diet, exercise, depression, and duration of breastfeeding. Exercise and reducing total caloric intake promote postpartum weight loss. Intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants are the most effective contraceptives for obese women. Contraceptive pills, patches, and vaginal rings are effective options; however, obese

Vaping for weight control: A cross-sectional population study in England.

INTRODUCTION: Concern about weight gain is a barrier to smoking cessation. E-cigarettes may help quitters to control their weight through continued exposure to the appetite-suppressant effects of nicotine and behavioural aspects of vaping. This study explored the views and practices of smokers, ex-smokers and current e-cigarette users relating to vaping and weight control. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of past-year smokers (n = 1320), current smokers (n = 1240) and current e-cigarette users (n = 394) in England, conducted April-July 2018. Data were weighted to match the English population o

Optimizing hemodialysis management using bioelectrical impedance analysis: emphasizing the significance of the phase angle.

Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) often experience complications, such as severe malnutrition, muscle wasting, and fluid overload, which significantly affect survival rates and quality of life. Accurate assessment and management of nutritional status and fluid retention are essential for improving patient outcomes. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a noninvasive and practical tool, is increasingly used to assess body composition and fluid distribution in patients undergoing HD. The phase angle (PhA), a BIA parameter, reflects cellular integrity and serves as a reliable indicator of n

Levetiracetam pharmacokinetics and its covariates: proposal for optimal dosing in the paediatric population.

OBJECTIVES: Levetiracetam is an anticonvulsive drug increasingly used in paediatric populations. Ontogenesis may alter its pharmacokinetics, demanding dose individualisation of levetiracetam in paediatric populations. We therefore aimed to explore levetiracetam pharmacokinetics and to propose its optimal dosing in the paediatric population. METHODS: Individual levetiracetam pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated based on therapeutic drug monitoring data, using a one-compartmental model, and regression models were used to explore possible covariates. RESULTS: 56 patients aged from 47 days
