Biomechanical evaluation of a novel L-shaped side-locking plate combined with OLIF: a finite element analysis considering 3 different bone densities.

BACKGROUND: Oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) is a minimally invasive technique widely used for lumbar degenerative diseases. However, high rates of cage subsidence, particularly in osteoporotic bone, necessitate supplemental fixation. Traditional bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) fixation compromises OLIF's minimally invasive advantages, while conventional lateral plates provide limited stability in the sagittal plane. To address these limitations, we developed and evaluated a novel L-shaped side-locking plate (NLSLP) using finite element analysis. METHODS: A validated L3-S1 finite element

Anterolateral Thigh Flap and Bone Plate for Mandibular Reconstruction in Patients over 55 Undergoing Ablative Oral Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Mandibular reconstruction following ablative oral surgery is particularly challenging in elderly patients due to comorbidities and reduced physiological healing potential. While vascularized bone flaps represent the gold standard, the combination of an anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap and a bone reconstruction metallic plate may be considered as a less invasive alternative. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of such reconstructive techniques, in terms of success rate and complication rate, in patients aged over 55. Methods: Studies were included if

Influence of cage material, plating and vertebral bone quality on subsidence and long-term outcomes following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion-a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a surgical procedure used to treat degenerative conditions of the cervical spine. Cage subsidence is a known post-operative complication, resulting in loss of indirect decompression, deformity, and radicular symptoms. The objectives of this study are to: (I) investigate associations between cage-plate constructs and postoperative subsidence after single-level ACDF; (II) determine relationships between cervical vertebral bone quality (C-VBQ) scores, subsidence, and fusion construct; and (III) identify potential risk factors that may

Analysis of the therapeutic effect of artificial leather embedding combined with fascial sleeve flap transplantation on chronic wounds of lower limbs with bone and plate exposure.

BACKGROUND: After severe trauma of lower limbs, bone, tendon or plate graft exposure is common. The traditional repair method is to use a variety of skin flap transplantation to cover the exposed part, but the wound often can not heal after operation, or the wound is cracked, ulcer, sinus, bone and steel plate are exposed again after wound healing. The reason for this result is that when the flap is covered, the space around the bone plate is not well closed, forming a dead cavity, blood and exudate accumulation, hematoma formation or infection, and finally the wound ruptures again. In additio

Assessment of the relationship of the distance between mandibular first and second molars with the inferior alveolar canal and cortical bone plate in an Egyptian subpopulation: a CBCT study.

The aim of the current cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) study was to evaluate the proximity of mandibular first and second molar roots to the inferior alveolar canal (IAC) and mandibular cortex in an Egyptian subpopulation. Scans of 120 patients (480 molars, 960 roots) were obtained from the College of Dentistry database at the Suez Canal University, Egypt. Buccal and lingual bone plates and root thickness were measured at the specified resected root end 3 mm from the radiographic apex, and so was the proximity of the root apices to the IAC. Measurements of the right and left mandibular fi…

Ankle flexor torque, size and density are differential determinants of distal tibia trabecular plate-rod morphometry and bone strength: The Ankle Quality Study.

HYPOTHESIS: Greater peak torque and higher myotendinous density at the ankle are associated with a more plate-like architecture at the distal tibia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, women and men ≥ 50 years old with no metal implants, reconstructive surgery, muscular dystrophies, or tendinopathies in any leg were recruited by convenience. Isometric ankle dorsi-plantar flexion and inversion-eversion peak torques were measured using dynamometry. HR-pQCT distal tibia scans were completed. Both assessments were completed on the same day on the non-dominant leg. Integral and trabecular vBMD

The challenge of non-union in subtrochanteric fractures with breakage of intramedullary nail: evaluation of outcomes in surgery revision with angled blade plate and allograft bone strut.

PURPOSE: Subtrochanteric fractures have a bimodal age distribution. They usually require open reduction and internal fixation. Closed reduction and intramedullary nail fixation rate are increased for this type of fracture. As a result, the hardware breakage and non-union rate is high among such patients. Our purpose is to evaluate the outcomes of the role of blade plate and bone strut allograft in the management of subtrochanteric non-union by femoral nailing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reported a group of 22 patients with subtrochanteric non-union, associated with breakage of the intramedulla

Mid-term outcome following revision surgery of clavicular non- and malunion using anatomic locking compression plate and iliac crest bone graft.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of clavicular non- and malunion is still challenging. Current surgical procedures often result in frustrating functional outcome along with high-grade subjective impairment and increased rates of revision surgery. However, the combination of biological augmentation with vital bone graft and a biomechanically sufficient fixation system seems to be a promising concept of treatment. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 14 patients with a mean age of 44 years (26-67 years) suffering from non-union (n = 11) and/or malunion (n = 3) of the clavicle were enrolled. All patients

Coracoid bone graft osteolysis after Latarjet procedure: A comparison study between two screws standard technique vs mini-plate fixation.

AIMS: One of the reason for Latarjet procedure failure may be coracoid graft osteolysis. In this study, we aimed to understand if a better compression between the coracoid process and the glenoid, using a mini-plate fixation during the Latarjet procedure, could reduce the amount of coracoid graft osteolysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computed tomography scan analysis of 26 prospectively followed-up patients was conducted after modified Latarjet procedure using mini-plate fixation technique to determine both the location and the amount of coracoid graft osteolysis in them. We then compared our

Free vascularised fibular grafting combined with a locking plate for massive bone defects in the lower limbs: a retrospective analysis of fibular hypertrophy in 18 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Free vascularised fibular grafting (FVFG) could be a good option for the restoration of massive bone defects in lower limbs when combined with use of a locking plate. The progress of fibular hypertrophy is closely related to regain of function, as well as to prevention of stress fractures. Multiple variables affecting fibular hypertrophy were investigated in the current study to elucidate correlative factors. METHODS: Eighteen patients with a massive bone defect in a lower limb reconstructed by FVFG combined with a locking plate were retrospectively enrolled in the current study. T

[Measurement of the electric potential difference between the plate and the bone and its impact on elongation of the limb after corrective osteotomy of the proximal end of the femur in children].

The electric potential difference between the bone and the plate inserted after corrective osteotomy of the proximal end of the femur in children has been measured with the use of YF-3503 digital multimeter. Thirty children were included in the study, the measurement taken at the removal of the plate. An increase of the potential difference of 150-330 mV was found in all patients. In 16 cases elongation of the operated limb occurred and was marked most in the 3-10 years of age group. It was directly proportional to the time of maintaining the plate in the femur. The lack of growth stimulation
