Alcohol and brain damage.

1. The safe limits of alcohol intake are difficult to define because of individual variations in susceptibility to damage. The present recommendations are based largely on epidemiological studies of liver damage. 2. Recent investigations indicate that alcoholic brain damage is much more common than previously suspected. More information is required about its natural history and the characteristics of individuals most likely to suffer damage. 3. Thiamin (vitamin B1) deficiency has long been associated with brain damage and may result from a number of additive causes in the alcoholic patient. Ne

Neuropsychology of autism.

Childhood autism is a syndrome characterized by a triad of abnormalities in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and imaginative activity. It is clinically heterogeneous, however, and probably represents a family of syndromes, each of which is the result of a different but related type of brain dysfunction. So far, there is no direct evidence for involvement of particular brain systems, although analogies to other disorders in humans and experimental animals do allow some plausible hypotheses.

Mechanical behavior of fetal dura mater under large deformation biaxial tension.

The mechanical behavior of fetal dura mater was investigated by means of a biaxial tension test designed to simulate the constraints imposed on the membrane by the cranial bones. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results obtained by using two published strain energy functions: one defined by Mooney and Rivlin (MR) and the other by Skalak, Tozeren, Zarda and Chien (STZC). The latter constitutive relations fit the experimental results consistently well. The STZC stiffness values from this series of tests are compared with those from membrane inflation tests performed pre

Sustained upgaze in coma.

Coma with sustained upward gaze deviation followed cardiac arrest in 15 patients and prolonged systemic hypotension in 2 patients. Neuropathological examinations confirmed the expected diffuse cerebral and cerebellar damage with relative sparing of the brainstem. No focal lesions were found in the upper midbrain or pretectum. Six patients developed slow, downward-beating nystagmus as the forced upward gaze resolved. Four of 6 patients with posthypoxic facial myoclonic jerks demonstrated synchronous upward gaze movements. Forced upgaze in come usually is the result of severe hypoxic encephalopa

[Hunger and intellectual development].

Severe hunger in infancy and early childhood is associated with reduced head size, reduction in cell number and impaired chemical composition of the brain. Intellectual deficits correlating with malnutrition persist into later life. Because malnutrition and poor socio-economic conditions often exist together the additional unfavorable influence or lack of environmental stimuli on intellectual development has to be taken in account.

Incidence and aetiology of infantile spasms from 1960 to 1976: a population study in Finland.

This series of cases of infantile spasms comprised 107 children born between 1960 and 1976 in the county of Uusimaa, Finland. The incidence of the syndrome was 0.38 to 0.42/1000 live births and has remained almost unchanged during those years, although there have been changes in the size of different aetiological groups. The importance of prenatal and perinatal factors, and especially of neonatal hypoglycaemia, as causal factors has decreased, whereas the numbers of cases due to infections and malformations has increased. Compared with investigations in other countries, this Finnish series dif

New markers of neonatal neurology.

Hypoxia-ischemia (H-I) constitutes the main phenomenon responsible for brain-blood barrier permeability modifications leading to cerebral vascular auto-regulation loss in newborns. Hypotension, cerebral ischemia, and reperfusion are the main events involved in vascular auto-regulation loss leading to cell death and tissue damage. Reperfusion could be critical since organ damage, particularly of the brain, may be amplified during this period. An exaggerated activation of vasoactive agents, of calcium mediated effects could be responsible for reperfusion injury (R-I), which, in turns, leads to c

Chronic Treatment of Ascorbic Acid Leads to Age-Dependent Neuroprotection against Oxidative Injury in Hippocampal Slice Cultures.

Increased oxidative damage in the brain, which increases with age, is the cause of abnormal brain function and various diseases. Ascorbic acid (AA) is known as an endogenous antioxidant that provides neuronal protection against oxidative damage. However, with aging, its extracellular concentrations and uptake decrease in the brain. Few studies have dealt with age-related functional changes in the brain to sustained ascorbate supplementation. This study aimed to investigate the susceptibility of hippocampal neurons to oxidative injury following acute and chronic AA administration. Oxidative str

Encephalopathy with retinitis due to cat-scratch disease.

Cat-scratch disease is one of several diseases known to be caused by Bartonella species. Some infections due to Bartonella resolve spontaneously without treatment with antibiotics, but in other cases the disease can be fatal without treatment. This case study reports a 7-year-old male who presented with an unexplained encephalopathy and unusual retinal findings associated with evidence supporting infection by B. henselae. The 7-year-old male presented with a 2-week history of general malaise and cervical lymphadenopathy progressing onto fever, headache, vomiting, and confusion associated with

Traumatic brain injury in the developing rat pup: studies of ICP, PVI and neurological response.

Diffuse brain swelling is a common complication in young victims of a seven head injury but, there is a lack of data on relevant models of injury. We produced diffuse brain injury in 21 day old Lewis rat pups (N = 33) by modifying a recently established weight-drop-model. The trauma threshold, neurological response, histological changes, intracranial pressure (ICP), and arterial blood pressure (ABP) were determined. In addition, the pressure-volume-index (PVI) was measured 15 min before, 2 min, and 1 h after brain injury. In the 1 m/100 g group 4 of 5 rats died, whereas in the 0.5 m/100 g only

Apolipoprotein E polymorphism and silent microangiopathy-related cerebral damage. Results of the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Microangiopathy-related cerebral damage (MARCD) includes white matter abnormalities and lacunar infarctions and represents a common MRI observation in subjects above 50 years of age. The risk factors of such brain abnormalities are not fully determined. The goal of this study was to determine whether the genetic heterogeneity of apolipoprotein E (apoE) contributes to the occurrence of MARCD. METHODS: Brain MRI (1.5 T) was performed in 280 individuals (ages 50 to 75 years) without neuropsychiatric disease randomly selected from the official register of residents of the

Neurogenic diabetes insipidus in children with hypoxic encephalopathy: six new cases and a review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: Hypoxic encephalopathy is rarely mentioned as a cause of neurogenic diabetes insipidus (DI) in children. We here report six cases of DI which occurred after severe hypoxic/ischaemic brain damage and include a review of the literature on 28 paediatric cases of neurogenic DI due solely to severe hypoxia/ischaemia. Airway obstruction, haemorrhagic shock and sudden infant death syndrome are the three major causes of hypoxia/ischaemia. The ages (25/28) ranged from 0.03 to 18 years (mean 7.27 years, median 5 years). The intervals between the hypoxic insult and the onset of DI (23/28) ran

[-Neonatal asphyxia as the cause of brain damage in children?-].

The prevalence of cerebral palsy (CP) has increased over the last 15 years in most countries. This is explained by an improved survival of very low birth weight prematures. In term infants birth asphyxia is of minor significance as a cause for CP. In only 10% of all CP cases following delivery at term, birth asphyxia must be discussed as a possible cause. In premature deliveries events during the perinatal period are of greater significance for the later development of a CP. Only severe forms of oxygen deficit, leading to tissue damage in the brain and other organs with clinical symptoms durin

Akinetic mutism associated with bicingular lesions: clinicopathological and functional anatomical correlates.

The clinical symptoms and neuropathological findings of three patients suffering from akinetic mutism were summarized. The patients showed almost absolute mutism and immobility and were unable to communicate in any way. The neurological signs varied from case to case. The pathological features common to all of the cases were bilateral lesions of the rostral part of the anterior cingulate gyri which overlapped onto the neighboring supplementary motor area, while differing as regards other damage. With the help of more recent neurobiochemical findings we tried to analyze the pathomechanism of ak

MRI and evoked potentials in a child with hydranencephaly.

Magnetic resonance imaging and evoked potential studies were performed on an infant with hydranencephaly. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the absence of cortical tissue with a structurally intact mid- and hind-brain. Evoked potentials confirmed the loss of cortical activity with preservation of brainstem function. These diagnostic tests gave efficient and precise information concerning the extent of the intracranial pathology and prognosis.

MR of the brain in mitochondrial myopathy.

PURPOSE: To determine the spectrum of MR findings in patients with mitochondrial myopathy and correlate them with central nervous system symptoms and signs. METHODS: We performed a prospective evaluation of the MR findings of eight patients with mitochondrial myopathy (three with Kearns-Sayre syndrome and five with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia), six of whom had central nervous system symptoms or signs (ataxia, sensorineural hearing loss, or cognitive dysfunction). RESULTS: All six patients with neurologic symptoms or signs had multiple abnormal MR findings, whereas patients w

Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy: correlation between ultrasound and computed tomography.

Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of motor and mental retardation. There ist no doubt that the haemorrhagic form of HIE can be detected by cerebral sonography, but it is of great interest to recognize non-haemorrhagic HIE as well. We demonstrate the follow-up of three patients with different types of non-haemorrhagic HIE: Periventricular leukomalacia in a critical ill premature infant 35 weeks gestational age, multicystic encephalopathy in a term newborn with severe perinatal asphyxia and circumscript ischaemic leukomalacia in a five month old infant with near miss event

Brain MRI fiber-tracking reveals white matter alterations in hypertensive patients without damage at conventional neuroimaging.

AIMS: Hypertension is one of the main risk factor for dementia. The subtle damage provoked by chronic high blood pressure in the brain is usually evidenced by conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in terms of white matter (WM) hyperintensities or cerebral atrophy. However, it is clear that by the time brain damage is visible, it may be too late hampering neurodegeneration. Aim of this study was to characterize a signature of early brain damage induced by hypertension, before the neurodegenerative injury manifests. METHODS AND RESULTS: This work was conducted on hypertensive and normo
