Traumatic brain injury often produces executive dysfunction. This characteristic cognitive impairment often causes long-term problems with behaviour and personality. Frontal lobe injuries are associated with executive dysfunction, but it is unclear how these injuries relate to corticostriatal interactions that are known to play an important role in behavioural control. We hypothesized that executive dysfunction after traumatic brain injury would be associated with abnormal corticostriatal interactions, a question that has not previously been investigated. We used structural and functional MRI

BACKGROUND: Repetitive head injury in contact sports is associated with cognitive, neurobehavioral, and motor impairments and linked to a unique neurodegenerative disorder: chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). As the clinical presentation is variable, risk factors are heterogeneous, and diagnostic biomarkers are not yet established, the diagnostic process of CTE remains a challenge. The general objective of the NEwTON study is to establish a prospective cohort of individuals with high risk for CTE, to phenotype the study population, to identify potential fluid and neuroimaging biomarkers, a

BACKGROUND: Cooling delays, temperature outside 33-34 °C, and blood pressure below the mean arterial blood pressure with optimal cerebral autoregulation (MAPOPT) might diminish neuroprotection from therapeutic hypothermia in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We hypothesized that longer time to reach temperature <34 °C and having temperature outside 33-34 °C would be associated with worse autoregulation and greater brain injury.
METHODS: Neonates with HIE had rectal temperature and near-infrared spectroscopy autoregulation monitoring during hypothermia (n = 63) and rewarming

Chimpanzee attacks can be vicious, mutilating, and disabling if not fatal. Stereotypically, the hands and face are targeted, and in male victims, genitalia are mutilated. The authors present a case highlighting the difficulties with early neurological assessment following such an attack. This 55-year-old woman was attacked by a 14-year-old chimpanzee. She suffered mutilation of both hands, severe midface bony, soft-tissue, and eye injuries, and scalp degloving. An emergency tracheotomy was performed at the scene, with an unclear duration of hypoxia. The patient was unresponsive without spontan

The objective of this paper is to study injuries from motorcycle and moped crashes in Sweden from 1987 to 1999. Databases at the National Board for Health and Welfare and codes from both ICD9 and ICD10 systems were used, including patterns of age, gender, E-code and type of injury. Length of hospital stay, type of injuries and trends over time was evaluated. To get a more detailed picture of the age distribution, type of vehicle used and number of killed, data from the Swedish National Road Administration were also used. In Sweden, 27,122 individuals received in-patient care due to motorcycle

The water channel protein aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is required for a normal rate of water exchange across the blood-brain interface. Following the discovery that AQP4 is a possible autoantigen in neuromyelitis optica, the function of AQP4 in health and disease has become a research focus. While several studies have addressed the expression and function of AQP4 during inflammatory demyelination, relatively little is known about its expression during non-autoimmune-mediated myelin damage. In this study, we used the toxin-induced demyelination model cuprizone as well as a combination of metabolic and a

White-matter injury leads to severe functional loss in many neurological diseases. Myelin staining on histological samples is the most common technique to investigate white-matter fibers. However, tissue processing and sectioning may affect the reliability of 3D volumetric assessments. The purpose of this study was to propose an approach that enables myelin fibers to be mapped in the whole rodent brain with microscopic resolution and without the need for strenuous staining. With this aim, we coupled in-line (propagation-based) X-ray phase-contrast tomography (XPCT) to ethanol-induced brain sam

The clinical differences between patients with skull base and convexity fractures were retrospectively investigated in 324 patients, of whom 110 had suffered head injury resulting in skull fracture. These 110 patients were divided into the skull base and convexity groups. There were no significant differences between the groups with respect to sex, age, Glasgow Coma Scales, injury severity scores, pupil abnormalities, and outcomes. Automobile collisions were the most common causes in the skull base group, and falls in the convexity group. Traumatic Coma Data Bank diffuse 1 type injuries were m

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized as any neurological trauma that develops after birth and therefore is completely unconnected from congenital anomalies, developmental disorders, or gradual processes. People who have survived accidents or other severe head injuries that left them with brain damage have been linked to memory loss and disability. On February 9, 2022, a 23-year-old individual was taken to a nearby hospital with a head injury after being involved in a traffic accident that morning while under the influence of alcohol. After several tests, the individual was identified

Traumatic brain injury often results in acute metabolic crisis. We recently demonstrated that this is associated with chronic brain atrophy, which is most prominent in the frontal and temporal lobes. Interestingly, the neuropsychological profile of traumatic brain injury is often characterized as 'frontal-temporal' in nature, suggesting a possible link between acute metabolic crisis-related brain atrophy and neurocognitive impairment in this population. While focal lesions and diffuse axonal injury have a well-established role in the neuropsychological deficits observed following traumatic bra

INTRODUCTION: Brain tissue hypoxia and ischemia are central to the pathophysiology of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and associated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps offer a non-invasive method for identifying ischemic tissue, but their use is often limited to the provision of summary data. We developed a reproducible, semi-automated analysis pipeline to three-dimensionally quantify and anatomically localize ischemic brain injury using DWI-ADC data in HIBI patients.
METHODS: A retrospective c

Identification of central nervous system injury is a critical part of perinatal autopsies; however, injury is not always easily identifiable due to autolysis and immaturity of the developing brain. Here, the role of immunohistochemical stains in the identification of perinatal brain injury was investigated. Blinded semiquantitative scoring of injury was performed on sections of frontal lobe from 76 cases (51 liveborn and 25 stillborn) using H&E, GFAP, Iba-1, and β-APP stains. Digital image analysis was used to quantify GFAP and Iba-1 staining. Commonly observed pathologies included diffuse whi

Acute brain injury (ABI) is a complex disease process that begins with an initial insult followed by secondary injury resulting from disturbances in cerebral physiology. In the metabolically active brain, early recognition of physiologic derangements is critical in enabling clinicians with the insight to adjust therapeutic interventions and reduce risk of ischemia and permanent injury. Current established approaches for monitoring cerebral physiology include the neurologic physical examination, traditional brain imaging such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ele

This study reviewed traumatic axonal injury (TAI) in patients with concussion. Concussion refers to transient changes in the neurological function of the brain resulting from head trauma that should not involve any organic brain injury. On the other hand, TAI has been reported in autopsy studies of the human brain and histopathological studies of animal brains following concussion before the development of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The diagnosis of TAI in live patients with concussion is limited because of the low resolution of conventional brain magnetic resonance imaging. Since the fir

Non-invasive measurement of resting state cerebral blood flow (CBF) may reflect alterations of brain structure and function after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, previous imaging studies of resting state brain in chronic TBI have been limited by several factors, including measurement in relative rather than absolute units, use of crude spatial registration methods, exclusion of subjects with substantial focal lesions, and exposure to ionizing radiation, which limits repeated assessments. This study aimed to overcome those obstacles by measuring absolute CBF with an arterial spin labelin

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with cerebral edema, blood brain barrier breakdown, and neuroinflammation that contribute to the degree of injury severity and functional recovery. Unfortunately, there are no effective proactive treatments for limiting immediate or long-term consequences of TBI. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of methylene blue (MB), an antioxidant agent, in reducing inflammation and behavioral complications associated with a diffuse brain injury. Here we show that immediate MB infusion (intravenous; 15-30 minutes after TBI) reduc

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: ADC changes are useful in detecting ischemic brain injury, but mechanisms other than tissue pathology may affect the kinetic movement and diffusion of water molecules. We aimed to determine the effects of brain temperature on the corresponding ADC in infants undergoing therapeutic hypothermia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brain temperature and ADC values in the basal ganglia, thalamus, cortical GM, and WM were analyzed during and after therapeutic hypothermia. The study cohort was categorized as having no-injury or injury. Among infants without injury, the correlation betwee

We established hypoglycemic rat models and divided them into three groups (the sham group, the acute hypoglycemia group and the recovery group). The brain water diffusion was examined using DWI. Thereafter, neuropathologic examinations were performed in order to evaluate the distribution of brain damage. The expression of AQP4 and Caspase3 was also examined using Western blot. We aimed to determine the specific brain regions which were vulnerable to hypoglycemia in relation to the water diffusion and neuropathology. The DWI scanning showed abnormal water diffusion in the cortex, hippocampus an
