Neurochemical mechanisms behind gill microcirculatory responses to hypoxia in trout: in vivo microscopy study.

In vivo microscopy combined with systemic blood flow and pressure measurements were used to examine the hemodynamic and microcirculatory responses to hypoxia in gills of rainbow trout and to clarify if the underlying mechanisms are adrenergic, cholinergic, serotonergic, or adenosinergic. Hypoxia (P(O2) 1.07-1.33 kPa) reduced, halted, or reversed the blood flow in the distal portion of the efferent filamental artery (EFA). Simultaneously, a large overflow to the central venous system appeared, allowing a continuous flow through many of the secondary lamellae. No vasoconstriction could be observ

Internal jugular vein anomaly in a young patient with facial hemangioma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic vascular anomalies originating from the internal jugular vein are uncommon and often manifest as a mass in the neck region. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report provides a 17-year-old Iranian female patient with no significant medical history other than a substantial cutaneous hemangioma on her face examined for dental operations. Computed tomography angiography revealed two major problems with blood vessels: the right internal jugular vein (IJV) was missing from the jugular foramen to the thoracic inlet, and the left internal jugular vein had two separate venous channels

Cervical bronchogenic cyst mimicking thyroglossal cyst: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations of ventral foregut development, often with an intrathoracic location. Presentation at the cervical region is very rare. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 29-year-old female who demonstrated a 3-cm medial neck mass in relation to the hyoid cartilage. The mass was painless with a rubbery consistency, moving with tongue movements. Cervical ultrasonography and thyroid scan were suggestive of nonfunctioning thyroglossal cyst. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of a cervical bronchogenic cyst. CONCLUSIONS: Cerv

Ultrasonography of the fetal neck in the second and third trimesters. Part 3. Anomalies of the anterior and anterolateral nuchal region.

Current ultrasound instrumentation yields high-resolution scans that allow accurate assessment of the fetal neck. Most neck structures are normally small and barely visible, so anomalous development can be easily identified, for example, when the nuchal fold is measured in the second trimester. The author examined the anterior and anterolateral nuchal region in a total of 15,200 second- and third-trimester scans obtained over a 10-year period. The abnormalities identified were differentiated with respect to their position (at the central midline or anterolateral or lateral to the midline) and

Developmental malformations of human tongue and associated syndromes (review).

The development of the tongue begins as known, in the floor of the primitive oral cavity, when the human embryo is four weeks old. More specifically, the tongue develops from the region of the first three or four branchial arches during the period that the external face develops. Malformations of the tongue, are structural defects, present at birth and happening during embryogenesis. The most common malformations are: 1. Aglossia 2. Microglossia, which is always combined with other defects and syndromes, like Moëbius syndrome 3. Macroglossia, which is commonly associated with cretinism, Down's

Anatomical variations in the digastric muscle.

The aim of this study was to investigate anatomical variations in the digastric muscle. Anatomical dissections of the head and neck region were performed in 15 cadavers at the Anatomy Department during a gross anatomy course. Three cadaver heads revealed anatomical variations in the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. The positional relationships among the accessory muscle bundles, the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, and the mylohyoid muscle were examined. Innervating branches from the mylohyoid nerve were also investigated. The remaining 12 cadaver heads without accessory muscle b

Pain. Part 2a: Trigeminal Anatomy Related to Pain.

In order to understand the underlying principles of orofacial pain it is important to understand the corresponding anatomy and mechanisms. Paper 1 of this series explains the central nervous and peripheral nervous systems relating to pain. The trigeminal nerve is the 'great protector' of the most important region of our body. It is the largest sensory nerve of the body and over half of the sensory cortex is responsive to any stimulation within this system. This nerve is the main sensory system of the branchial arches and underpins the protection of the brain, sight, smell, airway, hearing and

Delineation of a less than 200 kb minimal deleted region for cardiac malformations on chromosome 7p22.

Cardiac malformations are commonly seen in individuals with terminal and interstitial deletions involving chromosome band 7p22. Although these malformations represent a significant cause of morbidity, the dosage-sensitive gene(s) that underlie these defects have yet to be identified. In this report, we describe a 16-month-old male with tetralogy of Fallot, bilateral second branchial arch remnants, and mild dysmorphic features. Array comparative genomic hybridization analysis revealed a less than 400 kb interstitial deletion on chromosome 7p22. The deletion was confirmed by real-time quantitati

Refining the region of branchio-oto-renal syndrome and defining the flanking markers on chromosome 8q by genetic mapping.

Branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BOR) is an autosomal dominant disorder associated with external-, middle-, and inner-ear malformations, branchial cleft sinuses, cervical fistulas, mixed hearing loss, and renal anomalies. The gene for BOR was mapped to the long arm of chromosome 8q. Several polymorphic dinucleotide repeat markers were investigated for linkage in two large BOR families, and the region of localization was refined. Two-point linkage analysis yielded the maximum lod scores of 7.44 at theta = .03 and 6.71 at theta = .04, with markers D8S279 and D8S260, respectively. A multipoint analys

Definitive surgical management for second branchial cleft fistula: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Second branchial cleft fistulae are rare pediatric anomalies managed with surgical excision and, in certain cases, ipsilateral tonsillectomy to prevent postoperative recurrence or wound infection. Limited information is available in the published literature regarding surgical techniques to maximize patient outcomes and minimize recurrence. Our objective was to describe outcomes for the largest series of branchial cleft fistulae excised using a uniform technique based on embryologic principles. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of pediatric patients who underwent surge

The relationship between the fistula tract and the facial nerve in type II first branchial cleft anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: To share our experience involving seven patients with type II first branchial cleft anomalies (hereafter, type II anomalies), to determine whether the location of the external fistula openings of the anomalies are associated with the location of the facial nerve tract, and elucidate the relationship between the location of the fistula opening and the facial nerve. METHODS: The medical records of seven patients who underwent surgery from 2005 to 2013 for type II anomalies were retrospectively examined. The relationship between the fistula opening and the facial nerve was evaluated i

Understanding velocardiofacial syndrome: how recent discoveries can help you improve your patient outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Improved recognition of velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) has led to increasing awareness of VCFS by otolaryngologists. Understanding the developmental biologic processes affected in VCFS patients will help improve treatment and outcomes. Advanced application of molecular labeling techniques has better outlined the role of T-Box transcription factor 1 (TBX1) as the primary genetic anomaly leading to VCFS. TBX1 plays multiple roles during branchial, cardiac, and craniofacial development and increased understanding of how these systems are affected by TBX1 mutations will improv

Congenital deformities and developmental abnormalities of the mandibular condyle in the temporomandibular joint.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of the mandibular condyle and the articular eminence of the temporal bone. The morphological development of the TMJ during prenatal life lags behind other joints in terms of both the timing of its appearance and its progress. At birth, the joint is still largely underdeveloped. There are many causes of the various growth disturbances and abnormalities of the mandibular condyle and related structures. Growth disturbances in the development of the mandibular condyle may occur in utero late in the first trimester and may result in disorders such as aplas

Sonic hedgehog is essential for first pharyngeal arch development.

The secreted protein sonic hedgehog (Shh) is essential for normal development of many organs. Targeted disruption of Shh in mouse leads to near complete absence of craniofacial skeletal elements at birth, and mutation of SHH in human causes holoprosencephaly (HPE), frequently associated with defects of derivatives of pharyngeal arches. To investigate the role of Shh signaling in early pharyngeal arch development, we analyzed Shh mutant embryos using molecular markers and found that the first pharyngeal arch (PA1) was specifically hypoplastic and fused in the midline, and remaining arches were

[In vitro study on cranial neural crest differentiating into ectomesenchymal cell of the first branchial arch by FGF-8].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of FGF-8 on cranial neural crest cell (CNCC) differentiating into ectomesenchymal cell of the first branchial arch, and determine the appropriate dose and stage of CNCC exposure to FGF-8. METHODS: Cranial neural crest explants were cultured in free-serum medium containing modified DMEM/F12 and different doses of FGF-8. The differentiation type of CNCC were determined by in situ hybridization for Hoxa2 and immunocytochemistry for vimentin. RESULTS: Pre-emigrating CNCC demonstrated the negative Hoxa2 stain and positive vimentin stain after treated by 100 u

Third and fourth branchial pouch anomalies.

Congenital sinuses arising from the pyriform fossae are rare. They may present as neck cysts, recurrent neck abscesses, thyroiditis or neonatal stridor. Children typically undergo multiple surgical procedures before the diagnosis is made. We present our recent experience of five third-pouch sinuses and four fourth-pouch sinuses, including one bilateral case. The median age at presentation was four years. The mean number of operations prior to diagnosis was six (range 0-13), with a mean delay to diagnosis of six years. The diagnosis was made by barium swallow, by ultrasound, at pharyngoscopy or

In vitro teratogenic potential of two antifungal triazoles: triadimefon and triadimenol.

The teratogenic potential of two antifungal triazoles (Triadimefon and Triadimenol) has been investigated in vitro by the rat postimplantation whole embryo culture method. Rat embryos 9.5 d old were cultured for 48 h in rat serum with Triadimefon (12.5-250 microM) or Triadimenol (6.25-125 microM) and then examined. Some embryos exposed to Triadimenol (6.25-125 microM) were cultured for 12 extra hours in control serum to improve their developmental degree and then immunostain cranial nerves and ganglia. The exposure to the highest doses of triazoles only moderately reduced some morphometrical d

Migration of intradural epidermoid matrix: embryologic implications.

The migratory behavior of acquired cholesteatoma matrices (those arising from the tympanic membrane) has been described previously. This tissue is derived embryologically from the first branchial groove and represents the only migratory epithelium arising from the branchial groove system. If the matrix from a cerebellopontine angle (CPA) epidermoid tumor exhibits migratory behavior similar to that of acquired cholesteatomas, a first branchial groove site of origin for CPA epidermoids would be supported. Intradural CPA epidermoid cells were grown in alpha-minimum essential medium. The cultures

Cholinergic mechanisms in the neurocontrol of the branchial heart of the cephalopod Sepia officinalis L.

Cholinergic mechanisms controlling the branchial heart of the cephalopod Sepia officinalis L. were examined. In vitro tests indicate that acetylcholine (ACh) exerts a dose-dependent negative inotropic and chronotropic effect. Although the nicotinic agonists carbachol and nicotine mimic the effects of ACh closely, the muscarinic agonists pilocarpine, muscarine and oxotremorine induce only a slight inhibition of amplitude and frequency. Other agents tested (including atropine, pirencepine, hexamethonium, tetraethylammonium (TEA), d-tubocurarine and alpha-bungarotoxin) confirm that the acetylchol
