BACKGROUND/AIM: Studies on large cross-arch bridges in patients with severe periodontitis show that such bridges can stabilize the periodontal condition. However, it is not known if these bridges will reduce long-term tooth loss and what factors are important for their long-term survival. The aim of the study was to study all patients with Stages III/IV periodontitis who received cross-arch bridges for up 35 years in a private practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients referred for periodontal treatment from 1986 who received cross-arch bridges with observation period of minimum 7 years we

Background: The remarkable efficacy of B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA)-directed chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR-T) has had a significant impact on treatment strategies for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). However, response durability remains a concern, necessitating the optimization of CAR-T procedures. Therapies preceding CAR-T therapy are crucial for disease control and preserving T-cell fitness. Methods: This review summarizes the evidence supporting the potential of selinexor-based regimens as holding or bridging therapy with preclinical research, demonstrating s

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is an effective treatment for patients with acute ischaemic stroke secondary to internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion. Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) prior to MT is also commonly administered in suitable patients. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of patients with acute ICA stroke who were treated with direct MT versus combined IVT plus MT. Additionally, analysis was performed in different subgroups of patients such as those with large artery stenosis (LAA) to evaluate which subgroup of patients would benefit most from bridging IVT.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Balancing the risks for thromboembolism and postpolypectomy bleeding in patients requiring anticoagulation and antiplatelet agents is challenging. We investigated the incidence and risk factors for postpolypectomy bleeding on anticoagulation, including heparin bridge and other antithrombotic therapy.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort and case control study at 2 tertiary-care medical centers from 2004 to 2012. Cases included male patients on antithrombotics with hematochezia after polypectomy. Nonbleeding controls were matched to cases 3 to 1 by antithrombotic t

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety and avoidance behaviors are prevalent among breast cancer patients, yet their interrelationships with protective factors such as spiritual well-being remain poorly understood. Network analysis offers a novel approach to identify central and bridge nodes that may serve as key targets for psychosocial intervention.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 302 female breast cancer patients from a tertiary hospital in China. Participants completed the Social Anxiety Scale (SAS_1), Social Avoidance Scale (SAS_2), and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness T

BACKGROUND: Regenerating the true pulp-dentin complex in mature teeth with necrotic pulps or apical lesions remains challenging, and consistent clinical evidence of dentin bridge formation is limited. This report describes two adult cases treated with regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) using autologous dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and demineralized dentin matrix (DDM).
CASE PRESENTATION: In Case 1, a 33-year-old woman developed pulp necrosis with apical periodontitis in a maxillary left central incisor following traumatic subluxation. After canal disinfection, autologous DPSCs isolated f

Objective. The compromise of the hippocampal loop is a hallmark of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), the most frequent epileptic syndrome in the adult population and the most often refractory to medical therapy. Hippocampal sclerosis is found in >50% of drug-refractory MTLE patients and primarily involves the CA1, consequently disrupting the hippocampal output to the entorhinal cortex (EC). Closed-loop deep brain stimulation is the latest frontier to improve drug-refractory MTLE; however, current approaches do not restore the functional connectivity of the hippocampal loop, they are design

BACKGROUND: The role of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in primary cardiogenic shock (PCS) is well established. In this study, we evaluated the impact of etiology on outcomes.
METHODS: Between January 2009 and March 2013, we implanted a total of 249 patients with ECLS; we focused on 64 patients for whom peripheral ECLS was the treatment for PCS. Of these, 37 cases (58%) were "acute" (mostly acute myocardial infarction: 39%); 27 (42%) had an exacerbation of "chronic" heart failure (dilated cardiomyopathy: 30%; post-ischemic cardiomyopathy: 9%; and congenital: 3%).

INTRODUCTION: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) patients refractory to medical therapy and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) counterpulsation or in whom weaning from these therapies is impossible, are candidates for a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) as a bridge to recovery or transplant. Continuous-flow LVADs are smaller, have a better long-term durability and are associated with better outcomes. Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can be used as a temporary support in patients with refractory cardiogenic shock. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of mecha

Background: Due to the serious side effects and the resistant phenotype acquired by tumors, cisplatin has limited clinical efficacy. The current study aims to investigate the potential of disulfide-bridged phthalocyanines to make breast cancer cells (MCF-7) more sensitive to cisplatin. For this purpose, a novel disulfide-bridged dimeric phthalocyanine complex with a therapeutically active wavelength absorbance value that is activatable in cancer cells was synthesized and encapsulated in liposome nanoparticles. Methods: The synthesized phthalocyanine was characterized using FTIR, UV-visible, an

BACKGROUND: A subclavian intraaortic balloon pump (SC-IABP) can help to optimize patients with advanced congestive heart failure as a bridge to definitive therapy. We retrospectively reviewed our experience to assess the application and safety of this technique.
METHODS: We studied 88 patients with decompensated advanced congestive heart failure who received SC-IABP placement between January 2011 and December 2014. The SC-IABP was placed through a graft in the subclavian artery. The intended therapeutic goals for SC-IABP were bridge to transplant (n = 61), mechanical circulatory support (n =

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the profiles and outcomes of a cohort of advanced heart failure patients on ambulatory inotropic therapy (AIT).
BACKGROUND: With the growing burden of patients with end-stage heart failure, AIT is an increasingly common short or long-term option, for use as bridge to heart transplant (BTT), bridge to ventricular assist device (BTVAD), bridge to decision regarding advanced therapies (BTD) or as palliative care. AIT may be preferred by some patients and physicians to facilitate hospital discharge. However, counseling patients on risks and b

The management of patients with drug eluting stents (DES) who require early surgical intervention prior to the completion of antiplatelet therapy is challenging. Available literature suggests that bridging these high risk patients with glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (g2b3a) inhibitors could be efficacious in preventing stent thrombosis (Ben Morrison et al., Catheter Cardiovasc Interv 2012;79;575-582). However, this still remains to be proven in larger prospective studies. We report a case of stent thrombosis in a patient with DES planned for neurosurgery while on bridging g2b3a inhibitors therapy in th

BACKGROUND: Intoxication with calcium antagonists is associated with poor outcome. Even mild calcium antagonist overdose may be fatal.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man came to the Accident and Emergency Department in severe shock after they had taken a calcium antagonist overdose. After extensive medicinal therapy had failed, they both needed extracorporeal life support (ECLS) as a bridge to recovery.
CONCLUSION: In severe calcium antagonist overdose, the combination of vasoplegia and cardiac failure leads to refractory shock. ECLS temporarily supports the circulat

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare hematologic emergency that can rapidly progress to multiorgan failure and death if untreated. The role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in this setting is limited, and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has not been previously described. We report a case of a pregnant woman with suspected TTP who developed refractory pulseless electrical activity cardiac arrest before initiation of plasma exchange. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation with venoarterial ECMO was initiated despite profound thrombocytopenia

BACKGROUND: The economics of devices used for mechanical circulatory support not only involve the patient, the provider, and society as a whole, but also, importantly, the developers and manufacturers of these new technologies. The combined effects of years of development and testing with significant regulatory, reimbursement, and acceptance barriers make this a capital-intensive and high-risk endeavor. In addition, long-term circulatory support is, today, essentially limited to bridge to transplantation, a "market" of only $100 million. Competition is increasing, with new devices under develo

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has improved the limited overall survival (OS) of patients with intensively pretreated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, the potentially life-threatening toxicities of CAR T-cells and early relapses remain a challenge. As suggested by smaller monocentric analyses, radiotherapy (RT) in combination with CAR T-cells may have an immunomodulatory effect.
METHOD/ RESULTS: In this multicentric retrospective analysis, we investigated potentially synergistic effects of RT and CAR T-cells. Of 78 patients from four centers who rece
