Clinico-pathological features of the intradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts: report of a case and review of the literature.

Bronchogenic cysts represent congenital malformations deriving from an abnormal development of the primitive foregut during embryogenesis. These lesions are rarely found and they are most frequently localized in the mediastinum, or in lung parenchyma. Intramuscular localization is extremely rare, especially within the diaphragm. We report a case of a 54 year old man showing a large lobulated cystic lesion in the left hemidiaphragm. Complete surgery was performed and histological diagnosis of intradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst was made during surgery and confirmed after a total section analys…

The Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery for Mediastinal Bronchogenic Cysts: A Single-Center Experience.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for mediastinal bronchogenic cyst (MBC) excision and investigate the surgical indication for MBC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all consecutive MBC patients who underwent surgical excision between April 2001 and June 2016. One hundred and nineteen patients were enrolled with a median age of 45.4 years and divided into two groups: anterior mediastinum group (n = 48), and middle and posterior mediastinum group (n = 71). VATS technique was initially performed for each patient. The cyst …

Mediastinal Bronchogenic Cysts: Demonstration of Fluid-Fluid Level in Bronchoscopic US Imaging.

We report the findings for 2 patients with a fluid-fluid level seen on endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) images of bronchogenic cysts. The EBUS images demonstrated a well-circumscribed cyst with a fluid-fluid level showing an anechoic upper part and a relatively hyperechoic lower part. A fluid-fluid level on EBUS imaging of a bronchogenic cyst, which can help confirm the cystic nature of the lesion, has not been previously reported. EBUS-based confirmation of these cysts using fluid-fluid levels may help avoid unnecessary aspiration of the lesions.

Thoracoscopic resections of bronchogenic cysts arising in the posterior mediastinum: a report on 3 patients.

We report 3 cases of patients with bronchogenic cyst arising in the posterior mediastinum. The patients were a 19-year-old male, a 36-year-old female and a 33-year-old female, whose cysts were detected as abnormal shadows in the chest. In 2 of them, neurogenic tumors were suspected preoperatively. We performed thoracoscopic resection for the 3 tumors. Bronchogenic cysts may occur ectopically, and the posterior mediastinum must be sufficiently recognized as a rare but possible ectopic site.

Fibrosing mediastinitis as a rare sequel of iatrogenic rupture of bronchogenic cyst--a case report.

Fibrosing mediastinitis is a chronic disease process with a spectrum of etiology. We report a 51-year-old female who underwent incision and drainage procedure in the neck for deep neck and mediastinal abscess. Five years later she developed fibrosing mediastinitis. This lesion infiltrated from neck base into the upper mediastinum with tracheal compression and vessel encasement. She had resection of the lesion which proved to be a ruptured bronchogenic cyst with chronic inflammation. This rare case illustrates the importance of including inflammatory bronchogenic cyst in the etiology of deep ne…

Cervical bronchogenic cysts: a consideration in the differential diagnosis of pediatric cervical cystic masses.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the clinical and histopathologic features of cervical bronchogenic cysts. METHODS: Retrospective case series. RESULTS: A 22-year pathology database search identified 24 patients 18 years of age and younger with bronchial/bronchogenic cysts, four of which presented in the cervical region. CONCLUSION: Cervical bronchogenic cysts are rare in the pediatric population but deserve inclusion in the differential diagnosis of cystic neck masses. Such cysts result from abnormal tracheobronchial tree development with characteristic pathology including respiratory-type epithelium,…

[A case of bronchogenic cyst in the posterior mediastinum with high level of serum SCC antigen].

A 78-year-old man was picked up by chest X-ray findings. His CT scan film showed a posterior mediasinal tumor shadow. Serum level of SCC antigen was high and thoracotomy revealed bronchogenic cyst with high production of SCC antigen. After resection of the cyst, his serum level of SCC was within normal range. It is proposed that the elevated serum level of SCC is due to chronic inflammation or structural feature of the cystic wall.

Case Report: Bronchogenic cysts with pericardial hypoplasia are directly supplied by the descending aorta.

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are a type of congenital mediastinal tumor. This article reports a case that a BC associated with pericardial hypoplasia receives direct arterial supply from the descending aorta, forming a structure resembling pulmonary sequestration. A 17-year-old female was accidentally discovered to have a mediastinal cyst during a routine physical examination. The patient was asymptomatic. Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed that there was a thick blood vessel on the surface of the cyst, which directly connected to the descending aorta. Following comprehensive preoperative v…

Clinicopathological and endoscopic ultrasonography characteristics of esophageal bronchogenic cysts: A single-center study.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal bronchogenic cysts (EBCs) are usually discovered incidentally during radiologic or endoscopic examinations. They are rare and prone to misdiagnosis or mistreatment. As a submucosal lesion, the endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) characteristics of EBCs are unclear. AIM: To analyze the clinicopathological and EUS characteristics of EBCs. METHODS: A total of 22 patients with a histological diagnosis of EBCs who underwent EUS examination were retrospectively included. The clinicopathological and EUS features were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Most of the EBCs were asympt…

Intralobar pulmonary sequestration associated with a bronchogenic cyst in an elderly woman: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital lung malformations (CLMs) are rare congenital abnormalities resulting from abnormal development of the foregut and tracheobronchial tree. Pulmonary sequestration (PS) and bronchogenic cysts (BC) are two such anomalies, and while they can occasionally coexist, the combination of intralobar pulmonary sequestration (ILS) and BC is exceptionally rare. Only a limited number of cases have been reported in the literature. This case presents a unique occurrence of ILS and BC in the left lower lobe of an elderly woman, contributing to the understanding of these a…

The Purulent-Inflammatory Bronchogenic Cyst in the Context of a COVID-19 Infection: A Case Report.

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are often incidental findings during imaging and can cause compressive symptoms depending on their location and size. Infections of mediastinal BCs are serious complications that can lead to life-threatening mediastinitis. The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 on BCs remains largely undocumented. We present a unique case of a purulent-inflammatory mediastinal BC complicated by sepsis in the context of a Coronavirus Disease 2019 infection. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 infection may result in a bacterial superinfection of the BC. However, the tran…

Thoracoscopic excision of asymptomatic antenatally diagnosed mediastinal bronchogenic cysts: A case report.

Bronchogenic Cysts (BCs) are benign congenital malformations commonly located in the mediastinum. In recent years the development of antenatal diagnosis has changed the BCs management allowing an earlier minimally invasive approach. We report a case of an asymptomatic 8-months-old girl with antenatal diagnosis of subcarinal posterior mediastinal BC. Thoracoscopic excision of the cyst was successfully performed. The management of antenatally diagnosed BCs is discussed. Thoracoscopic treatment of BCs is safe and effective with the advantage of a reduced morbidity compared to thoracotomy.

Bronchogenic Cyst in the Cervical Region: A Rare Entity - A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Bronchogenic cysts originate from the tracheobronchial bud, which arises from the embryonic foregut. Congenital bronchogenic cysts in the cervical region, especially in the thyroid or perithyroidal area, are extremely rare. Moreover, distinguishing them from other cervical cystic lesions such as thyroglossal duct and branchial cleft cysts and metastatic cervical lymph nodes is difficult preoperatively. In this report, we discuss a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented to us with a history of anterior neck swelling for two weeks with occasional palpitations and bilateral flank pain. On work…

Bronchogenic cyst mimicking an adrenal mass in the retroperitoneal region: report of a rare case.

We report the surgical excision of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst that presented as a nonfunctioning left adrenal mass in a 25-year-old woman with continuous pain in the left flank. Preoperative biochemical testing confirmed that the mass was nonfunctional. Bronchogenic cysts are mostly benign congenital abnormalities that originate from the remnants of the primitive foregut and typically occur in the lung. Subdiaphragmatic and especially, retroperitoneal locations are rare. Despite the rarity of this pathologic entity, bronchogenic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis…
