Rosuvastatin to prevent vascular events in men and women with elevated C-reactive protein.

BACKGROUND: Increased levels of the inflammatory biomarker high-sensitivity C-reactive protein predict cardiovascular events. Since statins lower levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein as well as cholesterol, we hypothesized that people with elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels but without hyperlipidemia might benefit from statin treatment. METHODS: We randomly assigned 17,802 apparently healthy men and women with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels of less than 130 mg per deciliter (3.4 mmol per liter) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels of 2.0 m…

Change of visfatin, C-reactive protein concentrations, and insulin sensitivity in patients with hyperthyroidism.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the change of circulating visfatin, C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations, and insulin sensitivity in patients with hyperthyroidism. We studied 19 adult patients (14 women and 5 men aged 32.6 +/- 1.8 years) with hyperthyroidism due to Graves disease and 19 age- and sex-matched euthyroid controls (17 women and 2 men aged 36.7 +/- 2.7 years). All hyperthyroid patients were treated with 1 of 2 antithyroid drugs and were reevaluated after thyroid function normalized. Before antithyroid treatment, the hyperthyroid group had significantly higher visfati…

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, and outcome after ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory markers have been associated with ischemic stroke risk and prognosis after cardiac events. Their relationship to prognosis after stroke is unsettled. METHODS: A population-based study of stroke risk factors in 467 patients with first ischemic stroke was undertaken to determine whether levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) (Lp-PLA2) predict risk of stroke recurrence, other vascular events, and death. RESULTS: Levels of Lp-PLA2 and hs-CRP were weakly correlated (r = 0.09; P = .045). High-sensitivity CRP, bu…

C-reactive protein and B-type natriuretic peptides in never-treated white coat hypertensives.

Arterial hypertension has been associated with increased plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). This study tested the hypothesis that patients with white coat hypertension have lower plasma CRP and BNP concentrations than those with sustained hypertension. A total of 109 consecutive medical outpatients with never-treated office hypertension underwent ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and blood sampling to determine CRP and BNP concentrations. Patients with treated hypertension, lipid-lowering therapy, renal insufficiency or structural heart d…

C-reactive protein levels and subsequent cancer outcomes: results from a prospective cohort study.

Chronic inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many common chronic diseases, including cancer. C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration is a non-specific serum marker of inflammation, and higher levels have been observed among individuals who go on to develop cardiovascular disease. Nested case-control studies were conducted within the CLUE II study, a community-based cohort, to examine the association between CRP concentrations and subsequent development of colorectal or prostate cancer. CRP concentrations were higher among individuals who went on to develop colon cancer, but n…

High C-reactive protein levels during a benign neonatal outbreak of echovirus type 7.

Literature associates neonatal enteroviral infections with high morbidity and mortality. The literature also suggests that high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are indicators of bacterial infection. We report on high CRP levels, not due to bacterial infection, during an outbreak of neonatal echovirus type 7 infections in the fall of 2002, which had no major complications or mortality.

C-reactive protein is related to impaired oxygenation in patients with acute aortic dissection.

Impaired oxygenation sometimes occurs in patients with acute aortic dissection, however, the mechanism has not been fully investigated. We h … n = 13) and an impaired oxygenation group (minimum oxygenation index < 200, n = 13). Maximum serum C-reactive protein (max CRP) and other factors (age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidemia, Stanford type, thrombosed false lumen, pleural effusion, atelectasis, use of intravenous vasodilators) for the two groups were compared. C-reactive protein, cardiovascular risk, and renal disease in a remote Australian Aboriginal community.

Rates of cardiovascular and renal disease in Australian Aboriginal communities are high, but we do not know the contribution of inflammation to these diseases in this setting. In the present study, we sought to examine the distribution of C-reactive protein (CRP) and other markers of inflammation and their relationships with cardiovascular risk markers and renal disease in a remote Australian Aboriginal community. The study included 237 adults (58% of the adult population) in a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory of Australia. Main outcome measures were CRP, fibrinogen and Ig…

Relationship between C-reactive protein and progression of early carotid atherosclerosis in hypertensive subjects.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hypertensive outpatients were investigated for C-reactive protein (CRP) and carotid atherosclerosis because the influence of CRP on the progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in hypertensives remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 124 outpatients (aged 40 to 79 years) in treatment for hypertension were enrolled. They underwent repeated ultrasonographic evaluation of the carotid arteries for 35+/-12 months. Focal intima-media thickening of > or =1.1 mm was defined as plaque, and the plaque number, plaque score, and the sum of all plaque thickness were calculated. RES…

Mechanical complications after myocardial infarction reliably predicted using C-reactive protein levels and lymphocytopenia.

We assessed the accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and lymphocyte counts to predict a mechanical complication (MC) after myocardial infarction (MI). Within 10 years, we identified 36 patients with 39 echocardiographically confirmed MC within 30 days of MI: ventricular septal defect (17 cases), papillary muscle rupture (10 cases), and left ventricular free wall rupture (12 cases). They were compared to 41 controls with an uncomplicated hospital course after MI. Peak CRP levels and minimum relative lymphocyte counts obtained within 96 h of the acute MI (AMI) and before diagnosis of the …

C-reactive protein levels correlate with mortality and organ failure in critically ill patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein, the blood levels of which increase rapidly in response to infection, trauma, ischemia, burns, and other inflammatory conditions. Although used frequently in the ICU as a sepsis marker, the relation of CRP levels to organ damage is not well known. This study assessed the association between early serum CRP concentrations and the development of organ failure and mortality in ICU patients. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study. SETTING: A 31-bed ICU in a university hospital. PATIENTS: All 313 patients admitted to the ICU during…

Localisation of C reactive protein in infarcted tissue sites of multiple organs during sepsis.

This report hypothesises an active role for the acute phase protein, C reactive protein (CRP), in local inflammatory reactions. This was studied in infarction sites from liver and kidney in a patient who died as a result of multiple complications after cholecystectomy. In this patient, a general acute phase protein reaction was induced, with an increase in plasma CRP. In infarction sites of kidney and liver, colocalisation of CRP and activated complement were found, whereas non-infarct sites were negative for CRP and complement. These results suggest that CRP directly participates in local inf

Autoantibodies against C-reactive protein (CRP) in sera of patients with systemic rheumatic diseases.

Abstract An assessment of the frequency of serum autoantibodies against modified C-reactive protein (mCRP) in systemic rheumatic diseases and the association of these autoantibodies with clinical and laboratory findings in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Serum levels of autoantibodies against mCRP were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 125 patients with SLE and in 213 patients with other systemic rheumatic diseases. The frequency of patients with high antimodified CRP antibody levels was 32% in SLE, 22% in systemic sclerosis (SSc), 19% in polymyositis/dermat…
