Anatomy and harvesting of the medial cubital flap in fresh pig cadavers infused with lard.

BACKGROUND: Flap training can be technically demanding with a steep learning curve. Pigs has long been employed as an animal model for flap training. This cadaveric study was designed to (1) investigate the anatomy of pig medial cubital flap (MCF) and how it could be utilized surgically, (2) compare human medial arm flap (MAF) and pig MCF, and (3) investigate the feasibility of using the lard-based vascular injection technique in cadaveric preparations for flap training. METHODS: The vascular anatomy and surgical procedures of the MCF were conducted in fifteen (n = 15) and five lard-infused p…

Preservation of proteomic and genomic genotypes in skeletal material from forensically treated cadavers.

Skeletal material is often the only remaining evidence in missing persons cases, for mass burials, or disaster victim identification. Nuclear DNA can be highly degraded in these samples making it difficult to recover quality profiles for human identification or to deconvolute comingled remains. Proteins are chemically more stable than DNA and contain genetic information in the form of genetically variant peptides (GVPs) that can be used to infer non-synonymous SNP genotypes. To test chemical and genetic preservation of both biomolecular types, eight cadavers were examined using five treatments…

DESCRIPTION OF ESOPHAGOSTOMY TUBE PLACEMENT IN TWO GIANT ANTEATER (MYRMECOPHAGA TRIDACTYLA) CADAVERS.

Feeding of managed populations of giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is challenging in injured patients that present with anorexia. This report describes an approach for esophagostomy tube placement in this species. Cadavers of two adult giant anteaters were used for technique development. The animal was positioned in dorsal recumbency, and a guide feeding tube was inserted orally into the esophagus. A ventral midline incision in the midcervical region was made to access the esophagus and to protect submandibular salivary glands. The cervical musculature was dissected and retracted later…

A Fresh Cadaver Study on the Innervation of Brachioradialis and Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus Muscles.

PURPOSE: Distal nerve transfers have revolutionized peripheral nerve surgery by allowing the transfer of healthy motor nerves to paralyzed ones without causing additional morbidity. Radial nerve branches to the brachialis (Ba), brachioradialis (Br), and extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) muscles have not been investigated in fresh cadavers. METHODS: The radial nerve and its branches were dissected in 34 upper limbs from 17 fresh cadavers. Measurements were taken to determine the number, origin, length, and diameter of the branches. Myelinated fiber counts were obtained through histological…

A unique case of extrarenal calyces and associated vascular variations in an adult female cadaver.

The following urogenital and vascular anomalies were observed in the left kidney of an 81-year-old female cadaver during routine dissection: three extrarenal calyces; an accessory renal artery originating directly from the abdominal aorta; and a circumaortic renal vein. The typical renal anatomical structures were identified, from anterior to posterior, as the renal vein, renal artery, and ureter appearing near the hilum of the left kidney. After closer examination, three extrarenal calyces were observed exiting from the hilum of the left kidney to form the pelvis, then narrowed and became the…

Role of the Cadaver Lab in Lymphatic Microsurgery Education: Validation of a New Training Model.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgical transplantation of vascularized lymph nodes (VLNT) or lymphatic vessels (VLVT) alongside derivative lymphaticovenous procedures are promising approaches for treatment of lymphedema. However, clinically relevant training models for mastering these techniques are still lacking. Here we describe a new training model in human cadaver and validate its use as training tool for microsurgical lymphatic reconstruction. METHODS: 10 surgeons with previous exposure to microsurgery were trained in a controlled environment. Lymphatic vessel mapping and dissection in 4 relevant bod…

Endoscopic Hernia Repair: A Novel Technique for the Repair of Inguinal Hernia in a Cadaver Model.

BACKGROUND: The techniques of total extraperitoneal and transabdominal preperitoneal hernia repair have been conducted for laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia since long. However, they offer significant disadvantages of requiring general anesthesia, producing negative cosmetic outcomes, and other serious complications. We examined the feasibility of applying an endoscopic method alternative to total extraperitoneal and transabdominal preperitoneal for laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia in a cadaver model so as to overcome the disadvantages of the presently available techniques. METHODS…

Critical structures in the needle path of the costoclavicular brachial plexus block: a cadaver study.

PURPOSE: The costoclavicular block is a relatively novel alternative to the infraclavicular block. We aimed to determine the anatomical structures vulnerable to needle injury during a costoclavicular block. METHODS: The needle path consistent with a costoclavicular block approach was performed bilaterally on four lightly embalmed cadavers using ultrasound guidance. Careful dissection was performed with 18-G Tuohy needles in situ and photographs were taken. RESULTS: The needle penetrated the deltoid in six of eight cases and the pectoralis minor in three of eight cases. The subclavius tendon …

Aberrant right subclavian artery in a cadaver: a case report of an aortic arch anomaly.

In early embryogenesis, aortic anomalies occur as a consequence of disorders in the development of the primitive aortic arches system. Aberrant right subclavian artery, also known as arteria lusoria, is one of the important congenital anomalies of the aortic arch, in which the right subclavian artery arises from the arch of aorta instead of the brachiocephalic trunk. During routine dissection of a female cadaver, we observed retro-oesophageal aberrant right subclavian artery arising as the fourth branch from the aortic arch. In this case, the brachiocephalic trunk was absent. Early detection o…
