Malaria in travelers: a review of the GeoSentinel surveillance network.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a common and important infection in travelers. METHODS: We have examined data reported to the GeoSentinel surveillance network to highlight characteristics of malaria in travelers. RESULTS: A total of 1140 malaria cases were reported (60% of cases were due to Plasmodium falciparum, 24% were due to Plasmodium vivax). Male subjects constituted 69% of the study population. The median duration of travel was 34 days; however, 37% of subjects had a travel duration of < or =4 weeks. The majority of travellers did not have a pretravel encounter with a health care provider. Hepatitis A among health workers in Paris hospitals. Occupational Health Physicians of Paris Hospital (AP-HP).

To design a vaccination strategy against hepatitis A among hospital employees, we carried out a serological survey of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in 10 university hospitals in the Paris area. Subjects under 60 years of age were consecutively enrolled by occupational health services and tested for IgG to HAV by ELISA. Of the 1,516 subjects recruited, 926 were health workers (HW), 322 clerks, and 268 cooks or kitchen employees. Among HW and clerks the HAV seroprevalence was 53.8% (95% CI: 44.0-65.6), increasing with age and being higher among employees of African or Caribbean origin than t

[Health service coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Since the 1970s the Member States of the World Health Organization have pledged themselves to the goal of "health for all" and to broadening the coverage, quality, and efficiency of the health care services they provide. In spite of that commitment, there has been little progress in the conceptual understanding and development of indicators to help evaluate the characteristics of the populations with and without coverage, as well as in knowing the relationship between coverage and the characteristics of health care services. Most of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are in the p

Epidemiology of interstitial lung diseases in a native Afro-Caribbean population of French West Indies.

INTRODUCTION: Data about interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) epidemiology in the Afro-Caribbean population is lacking. Differences in incidence and prevalence compared to European populations have already been reported. The main objective of this study was to estimate ILD incidence in Guadeloupe overall and by etiology. The secondary objective was to determine the clinical, demographic, and environmental characteristics of patients with ILD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive epidemiological study to estimate the incidence and prevalence of ILD in Guadeloupe between 2013 and 2019

Economic Burden of Respiratory Viruses in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC): A Scoping Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to summarize the state of knowledge on the economic burden and cost of illness due to influenza, SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other respiratory viruses (ORV) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). METHODS: We performed a scoping review across three databases (PubMed-Medline, Scielo, and Embase) without time restriction, including economic burden and cost-of-illness studies. We extracted and analyzed data on publication year, population, study type, perspective, costing techniques, and settings. We reported absolute and relativ

Democratising Artificial Intelligence for Pandemic Preparedness and Global Governance in Latin American and Caribbean Countries.

Infectious diseases continue to pose a significant global health challenge, necessitating innovative approaches for predicting outbreaks, detecting variants, conducting contact tracing, discovering new drugs and managing misinformation. Artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly supported work in these areas, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the benefits of AI must be equitably distributed, and its use must be responsible and inclusive. As various nations implement AI regulations, the global nature of AI necessitates international collaboration to establish ethical guide

Global evidence on occupational sun exposure and keratinocyte cancers: a systematic review.

Individual studies have suggested that the association between occupational exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and the development of keratinocyte cancers (KCs) may only be valid in populations of European ancestry living in certain geographical regions. Comparative global data are scarce and so this review aimed to summarize current evidence on the association between occupational exposure to solar UVR and the development of KCs, with a specific focus on geographical location and skin colour. Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched for potentially relevant rec

Organic ultraviolet filters in nearshore waters and in the invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans) in Grenada, West Indies.

Sunscreens and other personal care products use organic ultraviolet (UV) filters such as oxybenzone, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, Padimate-O, and octyl methoxycinnamate to prevent damage to human skin. While these compounds are effective at preventing sunburn, they have a demonstrated negative effect on cells and tissues across taxonomic levels. These compounds have a relatively short half-life in seawater but are continuously re-introduced via recreational activities and wastewater discharge, making them environmentally persistent. Because of this, testing seawater samples for the presence of

Elder Abuse in the African Diaspora: A Review.

BACKGROUND: As with many other populations, abuse of older adults is a growing problem across the Africa Diaspora. Modernization and urbanization are eroding the traditional values of respect for older adults. Also, older adults living in environments with limited social and economic resources, and having no means of economic support create a recipe for elder abuse and neglect. METHODS: This article reviews the current literature on the epidemiology, risk factors, and interventions used for elder abuse across the African Diaspora. RESULTS: Reports of elder abuse range from 24.9% to 81.1% acr

Update on the mapping of prevalence and intensity of infection for soil-transmitted helminth infections in Latin America and the Caribbean: a call for action.

It is estimated that in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) at least 13.9 million preschool age and 35.4 million school age children are at risk of infections by soil-transmitted helminths (STH): Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale). Although infections caused by this group of parasites are associated with chronic deleterious effects on nutrition and growth, iron and vitamin A status and cognitive development in children, few countries in the LAC Region have implemented nationwide surveys on prevalence and intensity of infecti

The influence of religion on organ donation and transplantation among the Black Caribbean and Black African population--a pilot study in the United Kingdom.

Currently the demand for transplant organs, particularly kidneys, far outstrips the supply in the United Kingdom. This problem is particularly severe for the Black African and Black Caribbean populations who have a higher predisposition to end-stage renal failure. Several commentators have suggested that religious and cultural traditions may be the major determinant preventing Black Africans and Black Caribbeans from donating organs. An exploratory qualitative study using focus groups was undertaken with the aim of examining the influence of religion, among other things, on the extent and dire

[Unwanted pregnancy: impact on health and society in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Engaging in sexuality and reproduction should always be something that is wanted and planned. Unfortunately, when that is not the case, one result can be unwanted pregnancy. Unwanted pregnancies have consequences for women, their families, and their countries. This document reviews the causes and results of unwanted pregnancy, emphasizing the impact that this problem has on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Four reasons why unwanted pregnancy is a continuing problem in LAC are: 1) people's growing desire to have smaller families, 2) the unmet need for family planning, 3) the fact that con

[Progressive myelopathy caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in 3 patients in The Netherlands].

One man and two women (aged 30, 44 and 46, respectively) were seen between 1987 and 1992 with a myelopathy caused by the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). The first symptoms were impaired gait in the man and micturition disorders in the women. Diagnosing took 2 to 4 years, possibly due to the fact that many Dutch physicians are unfamiliar with the disease. The diagnosis was based on originating from an endemic area (i.e. Surinam and the Caribbean basin), the clinical picture and the presence of antibodies against HTLV-I in blood and CSF. The disease in a number of years leads to

Mapping occurrence of Taenia solium taeniosis/cysticercosis and areas at risk of porcine cysticercosis in Central America and the Caribbean basin.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to map the occurrence of Taenia solium taeniosis/cysticercosis at national level within Central America and the Caribbean basin, and to map the distribution of porcine cysticercosis at first-level administrative subdivision level (department level) and the porcine population at risk. This zoonotic parasite is believed to be widely endemic across most of Latin America. However, there is little information readily available for Central America and the Caribbean basin. Taenia solium has been ranked the most important foodborne parasitic hazard globally and within ende

Chromosome-12 mapping of late-onset Alzheimer disease among Caribbean Hispanics.

Linkage to chromosome 12p for familial Alzheimer disease (AD) has been inconsistent. Using 35 markers near the centromere of chromosome 12, we investigated 79 Caribbean Hispanic families with AD. Two-point linkage analysis using affected sib pairs yielded LOD scores of 3.15 at D12S1623 and 1.43 at D12S1042. The LOD score at D12S1623 decreased to 1.62 in families with late-onset (age >65 years) AD (LOAD), but the LOD score at D12S1042 was unchanged. Among families negative for the apolipoprotein E (APOE-epsilon 4) allele, the LOD score for D12S1623 was lower (1.01), whereas that for D12S1042 in
