Influence of early life environment on later life mortality in catastrophic and non-catastrophic medieval skeletal series from Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Czech Republic, 13th-16th century).

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether the early life environment, broadly characterized by adult lower-limb long bone metrics, is related to later mortality under normal and catastrophic conditions. MATERIALS: The sample for the study was composed of adult human skeletal remains excavated from a medieval cemetery from the 13th to 16th century in Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Czech Republic) (n = 390) under catastrophic (n = 242) and non-catastrophic (n = 148) contexts. METHODS: We collected combined femoral-tibial lengths as a proxy for stature and vertical femoral head breadths as a proxy

A Hidden Catastrophe: Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Presenting as Acute Ischemic Stroke.

A ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening emergency that typically presents with hypotension or abdominal pain but rarely with primary neurological deficits. We report the case of a 74-year-old woman presenting with acute focal neurological deficits concerning for ischemic stroke, whose preceding abdominal pain and lower extremity mottling ultimately pointed toward an alternative diagnosis. Point-of-care ultrasound and subsequent computed tomography angiography revealed a ruptured infrarenal AAA. We discuss how consideration of these additional clinical features led to t

Divergent demographic responses to the Kikai-Akahoya volcanic catastrophe in mid-Holocene Japan.

We examine human demographic responses to one of the Holocene's largest volcanic eruptions, which devastated East Asia 7300 years ago. Archaeologists have intensively debated the impacts of massive environmental shocks, highlighting either societal collapse or cultural continuity, although few studies situate such catastrophic events within longer-term demographic trajectories. We address this gap in knowledge by using statistical models to infer the demographic and environmental impacts of the Kikai-Akahoya (K-Ah) eruption on Jomon foraging communities occupying the Japanese archipelago. Catastrophic Bone Cement Implantation Syndrome Identified Real Time with Transesophageal Echocardiography.

Characterized by unexpected hypoxia, hypotension, or hemodynamic collapse, bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) is a rare complication of orthopedic surgeries. During the process of utilizing cement to aid in prosthetic implantation, increased intramedullary pressure can lead to embolization of mixed contents (cement, fat, air,) into the heart. By mechanical obstruction and inflammatory response, BCIS can lead to catastrophic cardiovascular collapse. Herein, we present an 81-year-old man with grade three BCIS with pulseless electrical activity during a left hip arthroplasty with the aid of

Exploring the role of pain catastrophizing in anxiety and depression among breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. Breast cancer survivors (BCSs) often face chronic adverse effects besides pain and pain catastrophizing (PC), including anxiety and depression. To understand how cognitive processes influence mental health outcomes in this population, it is important to investigate the relationship between PC and symptoms of anxiety and depression. This study aimed to explore the relationship between PC with anxiety and depression in BCS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 205 Iranian women with breast cancer participated (Me

Socioeconomic inequalities in catastrophic expenditures for hypertension management in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to explore the socio-economic inequalities in Ghana's catastrophic expenditure on hypertension management. METHODS: We used data from our catastrophic health expenditure survey (CHE), which was conducted in two primary health care facilities in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana: Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital (WGMH) and Shai Osoduko District Hospital (SODH). Data collection at these facilities took place from December 2023 to February 2024. We estimated the distribution of unstandardized CHE (in terms of wealth and sex). We decomposed our data to measure soc

Catastrophe Modelling for Time Series of Reported Cases of COVID-19 in the United States.

This study introduces a catastrophe-theoretic framework for modeling the multi-wave trajectories of COVID-19 incidence across U.S. states, addressing key shortcomings of traditional epidemic models. Using daily cumulative case counts from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, we fit quintic polynomials and swallowtail catastrophe models to ln-transformed data. The swallowtail model captures abrupt transitions, wave phenomena, and healthcare workload effects often missed by conventional SIR and SEIR approaches. Polynomial fits were excellent overall, with significantly better performance

Catastrophic Pediatric Stroke Following Attempted Transcatheter Ventricular Septal Defect Closure.

BACKGROUND: Periprocedural stroke is a rare but potentially catastrophic complication of pediatric cardiac catheterization. CASE SUMMARY: An 18-month-old girl with a perimembranous ventricular septal defect and progressive aortic valve prolapse underwent elective transcatheter closure. The procedure was abandoned after 2 unsuccessful device deployment attempts due to worsening aortic regurgitation and device instability. Two hours later, she developed acute neurological deterioration. Brain computed tomography demonstrated a large right hemispheric infarction combining mixed-density subdural

Mapping emotional function in fibromyalgia: integrating alexithymia, pain catastrophizing, and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and cognitive dysfunction. Alexithymia-difficulty identifying and describing emotions-has been reported in up to 48% of FM patients and is associated with increased psychological distress and pain intensity, yet its specific contribution to FM remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the interplay among alexithymia, self-compassion, pain catastrophizing, and hope to inform future integrated and emotion-focused treatment strategies for FM. Dual inhibition of PP2A and WEE1 induces apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe in cancer cells.

The serine/threonine phosphatase-2 (PP2A) controls mitogen-associated signaling and DNA replication. The WEE1 protein tyrosine kinase controls S phase progression and G2/M phase transition. Databases disclose that the levels of PP2A and WEE1 are associated with poor prognosis of leukemic patients (p = 0,0017/0,025; n = 54-163). We applied advanced, clinically used drugs that block PP2A and WEE1 to human cultured leukemia cells, primary pre-leukemic and chronic myeloid leukemia cells, and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells. Combined application of the drugs depleted cells in all cell cycle

FEMA phase-out? Catastrophic extremes challenge decentralization of US flood insurance.

The U.S. National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) faces growing solvency and affordability challenges amid proposals to decentralize the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and shift disaster management to states. Catastrophic floods often span state boundaries, exposing multiple decentralized insurance pools simultaneously. Using a path-independent simulation framework that integrates risk-based premiums, hydrometeorologically clustered flood losses, and 2025 reinsurance contracts, we evaluate the stability of national and state-level pooling using historical data. National pooling mark

Deoxypodophyllotoxin inhibited the growth of malignant pleural mesothelioma by inducing necroptosis and mitotic catastrophe.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis and limited effective treatment options. However, recent studies have shown that targeting microtubule regulation is a viable approach for treating MPM. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the antitumor behavior of deoxypodophyllotoxin (DPT) on MPM in vitro and in vivo and to identify its underlying mechanisms. STUDY DESIGN: The study employed in vitro and in vivo models to evaluate the efficacy and mechanisms of DPT against MPM. We used cell-culture techniques, molecular-biology assays,

Public Attitudes to Responding to Global Catastrophic Risks: A New Zealand Case Study.

Human civilization faces a range of global catastrophic risks (GCRs), including nuclear war, bioengineered pandemics, major solar storms, and uncontrolled artificial intelligence. In New Zealand, limited information exists on public views about whether the government should respond to such risks. A representative survey of 1012 adults in July 2024 included two questions on GCRs. Sixty-six percent (95%CI: 63%-70%) supported the government developing specific plans to address extreme risks, and 60% (95%CI: 56%-63%) supported establishing a dedicated commission or agency. In multivariable models,

Diagnostic Challenges in Acute Leukemia: From Dental Pain to Catastrophic Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

Background and Clinical significance: Acute leukemias are neoplasms of the hematopoietic system that are caused by the extensive proliferation of immature precursor cells ('blasts'), mainly in the bone marrow. They frequently manifest with vague and non-specific clinical symptoms, making early diagnosis particularly challenging. Case Presentation: This case report describes the clinical course of a female patient who initially sought dental care due to a persistent toothache-an atypical and misleading symptom. Subsequent investigations revealed a diagnosis of acute leukemia. Although the malig
