Experimentally induced chronic copper toxicity in cattle.

Eight Bonsmara bulls and eight Bonsmara heifers, having masses of between 210 and 266 kg when selected, were randomly allocated to four grou … s it was concluded that subclinical damage to the liver and eventual copper toxicity can occur when cattle are continually exposed to oral doses > or = 12 mg of Cu/kg of bm/d. It was also concluded that cattle can probably tolerate oral doses of < or = 0.6 mg of Cu/kg of bm/d for an indefinite period, provided there are no other sources of copper, such a …

Oak (Quercus incana) leaf poisoning in cattle.

Oak poisoning occurred in crossbred cattle due to eating immature tender oak (Quercus incana) leaves. Mortality was 70%. The animals exhibited anorexia, severe constipation and brisket edema. The feces were hard, pelleted and coated with blood and mucous. Significant reductions in blood hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and significant elevations in serum bilirubin were observed. Serum urea nitrogen and creatinine were greatly increased. There was bilirubinuria, proteinuria, hypoproteinemia and hypocalcemia, and greatly increased activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase, lactat…

Cattle fly control using controlled-release insecticides.

Field trials were carried out from 1980 to 1984 on the use of a controlled-release pesticidal fly control technique on farms in Sussex, England, with a recurrent infectious keratoconjunctivitis problem related to fly attack. Pesticide impregnated p.v.c. ear-tags provided control of biting and disease-carrying fly species throughout the season. Over 90% control of flies, compared with untreated herds, was attained using 2 tags impregnated with cypermethrin, fenvalerate or flucythrinate, although control using a single tag was unsatisfactory. In all cases infectious keratoconjunctivitis was almo

Abomasal ulcer disease in adult dairy cattle.

In a review of case records of all dairy cattle greater than or equal to 1 year of age admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in a 4-year-period, abomasal ulcer disease was diagnosed definitively in 42 (2.17%) of cattle. In 5 additional cattle, abomasal ulcers were secondary to lymphosarcoma. The mortality rate for cattle with confirmed abomasal ulcer disease was 50%. For cattle with ulcers causing severe blood loss or diffuse peritonitis, the mortality rate was 100%. Concurrent disease conditions were present in 76% of cattle with abo…

Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo infection of cattle.

A survey of normal cattle in the Southern Victorian statistical divisions revealed that microscopic agglutination titres to L. hardjo occur at high frequency and are distributed throughout the cattle population. These titres are difficult to interpret as they may represent recent or old exposure, with or without disease. L. hardjo infection of dairy cattle was studied in 4 herds using the microscopic agglutination and complement-fixation tests. Statistical comparisons of individual titres obtained indicated that the sensitivity of the complement-fixation test was satisfactory for diagnostic pu…

Atypical interstitial pneumonia in yearling feedlot cattle.

During each week of 1974, we surveyed, for illnesses and deaths, a constantly changing population of yearling feedlot cattle that, for the year, totaled 407,000 animals. From 3,943 fatalities, 1,988 necropsies were made; of this number, 106 (5.3%) had atypical interstitial pneumonia. The death rate was higher during summer and fall than during the other seasons and was evenly distributed throughout each of the 4 stages of fattening. Gross pulmonary lesions involved both lungs and were prominent throughout the caudal (diaphragmatic) lobes. Epithelialization, hemorrhage, fibrin, hyaline membrane…

Shipping fever pneumonia in yearling feedlot cattle.

During each week of 1974, we surveyed, for illnesses and deaths, a continually changing population of yearling feedlot cattle that, for the year, totaled 407,000 animals. About 5.1% of the cattle sickened and, of these, 18.9% died. From the 3,943 fatalities, 1,988 necropsies were made. About 75% of the clinical diagnoses and 64% of the necropsy diagnoses were respiratory tract diseases; of the fatalities from respiratory tract diseases, 75% were attributed to shipping fever pneumonia. Nearly 72% of fatal cases of shipping fever pneumonia occurred during the first 45 days on feed. In the lungs …

Bacterial Respiratory Pathogens of Beef Stocker Cattle.

Bovine respiratory disese (BRD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortlaity in stocker cattle, a high-risk sector of the beef cattle industry, characterized by stress, commingling, and limited or unknown prior health management. Key bacterial pathogens, including Mannheimia haemolytica, Pateurella multocida, Histophilus somni, and Mycoplasmopsis bovis, act as opportunists when host defenses are compromised. These microbes employ diverse virulence mechanisms, including toxins, adhesins, surface proteins, and immune evasion strategies to colonize the lower respiratory tract and cause disease…

Genomic selection in United States dairy cattle.

The genomic selection program for dairy cattle in the United States has doubled the rate of genetic gain. Since 2010, the average annual increase in net merit has been $85 compared to $40 during the previous 5 years. The number of genotypes has been rapidly increasing both domestically and internationally and reached over 6.5 million in 2022 with 1,134,593 submitted in 2021. Evaluations are calculated for over 50 traits. Feed efficiency (residual feed intake), heifer and cow livability, age at first calving, six health traits, and gestation length have been added in recent years to represent t…

Emerging Tickborne Bacteria in Cattle from Colombia.

Ehrlichia minasensis is a new pathogenic bacterial species that infects cattle, and Borrelia theileri causes bovine borreliosis. We detected E. minasensis and B. theileri DNA in cattle from southwestern Colombia by using PCR. E. minasensis and B. theileri should be considered potential etiologies of febrile syndrome in cattle from Colombia.

New Brucella variant isolated from Croatian cattle.

BACKGROUND: A novel Brucella strain closely related to Brucella (B.) melitensis biovar (bv) 3 was found in Croatian cattle during testing within a brucellosis eradication programme. CASE PRESENTATION: Standardised serological, brucellin skin test, bacteriological and molecular diagnostic screening for Brucella infection led to positive detection in one dairy cattle herd. Three isolates from that herd were identified to species level using the Bruce ladder method. Initially, two strains were typed as B. melitensis and one as B. abortus, but multiplex PCR based on IS711 and the Suis ladder show…
