Reperfusion Revision Surgery for Augmented Vertebral Nonunion with Movable Cement.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic vertebral nonunion is a special type of osteoporotic vertebral fracture and can gain satisfactory clinical outcomes using vertebral augmentation. In the rare occurrence that augmented vertebral nonunion occurs postoperatively, pedicle screw fixation is the primary strategy. However, is a different method like the second shot of cement reliable? The purpose of this study is to introduce the reperfusion revision surgery strategy for treatment of osteoporotic vertebral nonunion. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 80-year-old female patient experienced vertebral re-nonunion in situ aft

Characterization of naturally aged cement-solidified MSWI fly ash.

Solidification/stabilization (S/S) is the most common treatment for municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA), and is widely applied in developed countries but has a history barely longer than 10 years in China. However, our understanding of the physicochemical characteristics of the solidified FA body after long-term natural aging is comparatively poor. Focusing on cement-solidified FA that was naturally aged for 6 years (hereafter referred to as FA-6), the physicochemical characteristics including elemental composition, mineral composition, microstructure, thermogravimetry, distri

Release of antimicrobial compounds from a zinc oxide-chelate cement.

This study examined the release of cetylpyridinium chloride and benzalkonium chloride from fatty acid chelate temporary dental cement and their antimicrobial effects. The cement was Cavex Temporary, and either cetylpyridinium chloride or benzalkonium chloride was added (1% or 5% by mass), incorporating into the base paste. Release of the additives was determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Possible chemical interactions between the cement components and additives were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Antimicrobial effects were assessed by

Is vertebral body stenting in combination with CaP cement superior to kyphoplasty?

PURPOSE: In the evolution of the minimally invasive treatment of vertebral compression fractures, vertebral body stenting (VBS) was developed to reduce intraoperative and secondary loss of vertebral height. Particularly in combination with the usage of biodegradable cement, the influence of VBS on the rate of intraoperative complications and long-term outcome is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) and VBS regarding their long-term clinical and radiological outcome in combination with calcium phosphate (CaP) application instead

Cardiac perforation caused by cement after percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty.

Percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty is a relatively simple, convenient, and minimally invasive procedure in which polymethylmethacrylate bone cement is used to manage back pain and spinal instability associated with osteoporotic compression fractures and other osteolytic spinal lesions. However, cement leakage into the venous system is a serious complication following percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty. A 74-year-old woman presented with cardiac perforation and pulmonary embolism caused by cement leakage into her venous system. She subsequently underwent surgery to effectively remove a needle-shape

Cement Leakage into Adjacent Vertebral Body Following Percutaneous Vertebroplasty.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) is a minimally invasive procedure for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures that fail to respond to conventional conservative treatment. It significantly improves intolerable back pain within hours, and has a low complication rate. Although rare, PV is not free of complications, most of which are directly related to cement leakage. Because of its association with new adjacent fracture, the importance of cement leakage into the adjacent disc space is paramount. Here, we report an interesting case of cement leakage into the adjacent upper vertebral body as

Intracardiac bone cement embolism as a complication of vertebroplasty: management strategy.

BACKGROUND: Vertebroplasty carries multiple complications due to the leakage of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) into the venous system through the iliolumbar or epidural veins. The rate of venous cement complications may vary from 1 to 10 %, with cement extravasation into the venous system in 24 % of patients. Emboli may further migrate into the right heart chambers and pulmonary arteries. Patients may vary in presentation from asymptomatic or symptoms such as syncope to life-threatening complications. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 57-year-old lady diagnosed with osteoporosis who underwen

Chromium-induced skin damage among Taiwanese cement workers.

Little research has been done on the relationships between chromium exposure, skin barrier function, and other hygienic habits in cement workers. Our purpose was to investigate chromium-induced skin barrier disruption due to cement exposure among cement workers. One hundred and eight cement workers were recruited in this study. Urinary chromium concentration was used to characterize exposure levels. The biological exposure index was used to separate high and low chromium exposure. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was used to assess the skin barrier function. TEWL was significantly increased in

Reduction of cement leakage by sequential PMMA application in a vertebroplasty model.

PURPOSE: Leakage is the most common complication of percutaneous cement augmentation of the spine. The viscosity of the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement is strongly correlated with the likelihood of cement leakage. We hypothesized that cement leakage can be reduced by sequential cement injection in a vertebroplasty model. METHODS: A standardized vertebral body substitute model, consisting of aluminum oxide foams coated by acrylic cement with a preformed leakage path, simulating a ventral vein, was developed. Three injection techniques of 6 ml PMMA were assessed: injection in one single st
