The certification of SRM 1546--Meat Homogenate, a new reference material for nutrients in a high protein, high fat matrix.

In response to reference material needs expressed by the food industry and government regulators, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a new Standard Reference Material (SRM) consisting of a canned meat product with certified and reference values for a large number of constituents. SRM 1546 Meat Homogenate consists of a mixture of finely ground pork and chicken prepared and canned by a commercial process. NIST determined the concentration levels of cholesterol, sodium, calcium, iron, and seven fatty acids in this SRM using well defined methods and procedures.

A Dedicated Graduate Certificate in Health Equity: A Novel Approach to Increase the Future Physician Capacity to Address Health Inequities.

PROBLEM: Pervasive health inequities require new approaches to medical education to equip future physicians to address unjust disparities in health outcomes. Few curricula exist that focus on development of competencies and leadership skills in health equity, and little is known about the content that should be included. APPROACH: Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine developed and implemented the Graduate Certificate in Health Equity (CHE) to address this educational gap. The CHE proposal was approved in summer 2019, enrollment began in October 201

Cause of death certificates in nursing homes: Does quality matter? A retrospective review from two counties in Norway.

AIMS: One half of Norwegians die in nursing homes, where death certificates (DCs) are completed by two types of physicians: in-house physicians or physicians on call. The aims of this study were to examine differences in the quality of DCs due to type of physician and to uncover possible implications of errors for the public statistics. METHODS: DCs from the year 2013 from nursing homes in the catchment area of Akershus University Hospital were examined with regard to logical deficiencies, garbage code diagnoses and type of certifying physician. In one third of cases, the registered causes of

Improving US maternal mortality reporting by analyzing literal text on death certificates, United States, 2016-2017.

Changes in data collection and processing of US maternal mortality data across states over time have led to inconsistencies in maternal death reporting. Our purpose was to identify possible misclassification of maternal deaths and to apply alternative coding methods to improve specificity of maternal causes. We analyzed 2016-2017 US vital statistics mortality data with cause-of-death literals (actual words written on the death certificate) added. We developed an alternative coding strategy to code the "primary cause of death" defined as the most likely cause that led to death. We recoded death

"They Said on the Death Certificate…But Really What I Think Happened": Characterizing Cause of Death in VA Medical Centers.

Cause of death information is a vital resource for family and public health, yet significant issues persist regarding its determination, documentation and communication. In this study, we aim to characterize cause of death attribution process from the perspective of next-of-kin of Veterans who died in Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. Using a semi-structured guide, we explored next-of-kin's experiences of the Veteran's terminal hospitalization and conducted a content analysis of interview texts. In over two-third of cases next-of-kin's understanding was not consistent with their recollect

[Long and short stays under ASPPI: Comparison of clinical and non-clinical data from 250 initial certificates].

BACKGROUND: On July 5, 2011, France introduced a law permitting the involuntary admission of patients considered to be in "imminent danger" into psychiatric care without the consent of the family. This is known as "admission en soins psychiatriques pour péril imminent"(ASPPI). ASPPI authorizes all physicians to hospitalize a patient without his or her consent nor the consent of a third party. This differs from previous measures as only one certificate is needed. The law also requires involuntarily admitted patients to present themselves before a judge specialized in Liberties and Detentions (j

Issues using linkage of hospital records and death certificate data to determine the size of a potential palliative care population.

BACKGROUND: Studies aiming to identify palliative care populations have used data from death certificates and in some cases hospital records. The size and characteristics of the identified populations can show considerable variation depending on the data sources used. It is important that service planners and researchers are aware of this. AIM: To illustrate the differences in the size and characteristics of a potential palliative care population depending on the differential use of linked hospital records and death certificate data. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS:

Sensitivity of birth certificate reports of birth defects in Atlanta, 1995-2005: effects of maternal, infant, and hospital characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed variations in the sensitivity of birth defect diagnoses derived from birth certificate data by maternal, infant, and hospital characteristics. METHODS: We compared birth certificate data for 1995-2005 births in Atlanta with data from the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program (MACDP). We calculated the sensitivity of birth certificates for reporting defects often discernable at birth (e.g., anencephaly, spina bifida, cleft lip, clubfoot, Down syndrome, and rectal atresia or stenosis). We used multivariable logistic regression models to examine associations wit

Using census data and birth certificates to reconstruct the early-life socioeconomic environment and the relation to the development of Alzheimer's disease.

The early-life environment and its effect on growth and maturation of children and adolescents are associated with several adult chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Because it is not feasible to collect information prospectively over the average life span, methods to reconstruct the early-life environment of the aged are necessary to evaluate these associations. In a community-based case-control study conducted in the United States, we collected U.S. census records and birth certificates to reconstruct the early-life socioeconomic environment of each elderly subject. Accuracy of industry and occupation on death certificates of electric utility workers: implications for epidemiologic studies of magnetic fields and cancer.

A substantial epidemiologic literature has relied on occupation and industry information from death certificates to make inferences about the association of electric and magnetic field exposure with cancer, but the validity of the occupational data on death certificates is questionable. We compared occupation and industry information from death certificates to company work histories for 793 electric utility workers who died from brain cancer (n=143), leukemia (n=156), lung cancer (n=246, randomly sampled), and non-cancer causes (n=248, randomly sampled). Nearly 75% of death certificates correc

Comparison of cause of death coding on death certificates with coding in the Royal College of General Practitioners Oral Contraception Study.

A comparison has been made between the coding of the cause of death by (a) the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) during the Oral Contraception Study and (b) the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) or the General Register Office for Scotland (GRO) on death certificates for the same subjects. Broad grouping of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) showed close agreement between RCGP and OPCS or GRO coding for all deaths which occurred from the start of the Oral Contraception Study in 1968 up to December 1978. Moreover, where discrepancies occurred there were
