A case of large scalenus minimus muscle.

During the dissection of an 80-year-old, white, male cadaver, a large scalenus minimus muscle was detected on the right side. Scalenus minimus muscle, a fiber bundle which strengthens the suprapleural membrane, arises from the anterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and inserts to the inner border of the first rib and cupula pleura. In the present case, the scalenus minimus muscle on the suprapleural membrane was large on the right side. Its origin was on the anterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and the muscle was located b

Effect of combined use of reinforcement materials on the fracture resistance of MOD cavity restorations in endodontically treated teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Bucco-lingual/palatinal vertical fractures are among the most common fractures found in mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavity restorations of endodontically treated teeth. This study aimed to compare the effects of different new-generation reinforcement materials applied to two cervical and coronal segments of the teeth on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth in their coronal restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 84 freshly extracted, intact human mandibular molars were selected and treated endodontically according to standardized protocols. Standard MOD ca

The injury pattern in fatal suicidal falls from a height: an examination of 307 cases.

Falls from a height are a common cause of suicidal death in urban settings. The aim of the present work is to describe and discuss a specific set of 307 autopsies performed in a metropolitan city such as Milan, Italy from 2006 to 2011, with a special focus on the relationship between the injury pattern and height of the fall, age at death and weight at death. The rib cage (92%), the lungs (76%), the heart (53%) and the liver (58%) turned out to be the most injured structures in the whole population. Age resulted statistically significant for heart, thoracic aorta, mesentery, kidney hilus, hip

Finite Element Study of Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Constructs Near Cervicothoracic Junction-Is T2 Modeling Necessary?

Cervical spine finite element (FE) models often terminate at T1, which may introduce boundary-induced alterations, particularly at the cervicothoracic junction (C7-T1). This is relevant in multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) constructs that terminate at C7, leaving C7-T1 as the inferior adjacent segment. This study analyzes the biomechanical response of a three-level ACDF, which included the lowest cervical vertebra C7, using two FE models: a conventional C2-T1 model and an extended C2-T2 model. Postoperative range of motion (ROM) is evaluated under physiological flexion

Stroke due to a fusiform aneurysm of the cervical vertebral artery: case report.

Aneurysms of the cervical vertebral artery (VA) are uncommon; they are often caused by trauma or spontaneous dissection. A fusiform aneurysm without evidence of atherosclerosis or dissection has not been reported previously. A 46-year-old man presented with a pontine infarct. Imaging revealed a fusiform aneurysm of the left VA at the C5-6 level, with occlusion of the basilar artery. Associated minor anomalies included fusion of the vertebral bodies of C5 and C6, cervical rib and platybasia. The left VA arose directly from the aortic arch and entered the transverse foramen at the C4 level. Hype…

Multilevel anterior cervical fusion using skull bone grafts. Case report.

The successful use of autogenous skull bone grafts for a C3-7 anterior cervical fusion is reported and compared with results using other bone grafts. A 51-year-old man with C4-7 anterior cord compression due to spurs and ossified posterior longitudinal ligaments developed progressive tetraparesis following a minor head injury. He underwent anterior decompression and fusion. On two occasions an iliac graft had failed; however, a graft of autogenous skull bone was successful. The skull bone was found superior to bone from other sites, such as the iliac crest, rib, tibia, and fibula, showing suff

Comparative morphofunctional analysis of axial skeleton excluding the skull of primates based on the anatomical, radiographic, and tomographic description of the black-striped capuchin (Sapajus libidinosus Spix, 1823).

Comparative anatomy the basis for studies of evolution, and radiographic and tomographic aspects, as auxiliary methods in the investigation of anatomical particularities, reinforce evolutionary research. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the vertebrae, sternum, and ribs of the capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus) by means of anatomical dissection and radiographic and tomographic images. To this purpose, four cadavers were used in the anatomical analysis and five living animals for the imaging exams. The bones were described and compared with data from other primates species fou

Differential diagnosis of cervical radiculopathy and superior pulmonary sulcus tumor.

BACKGROUND: The result would be disastrous if the superior pulmonary sulcus tumor (Pancoast tumor) was misdiagnosed as degenerative cervical spine diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the differential diagnosis methods of cervical radiculopathy and superior pulmonary sulcus tumor. METHODS: Clinical manifestations, physical, and radiological findings of 10 patients, whose main complaints were radiating shoulder and arm pain and later were diagnosed with superior pulmonary sulcus tumor, were reviewed and compared with those of cervical radiculopathy. RESULTS: Superior pulmonary s

Parathyroid adenoma causing a spontaneous cervical and mediastinal massive hematoma.

Cervical and mediastinal hemorrhaging caused by a spontaneous rupture of a parathyroid adenoma has been rarely reported. Herein, we report a case of a 52-year-old woman who experienced a sudden onset of cervical and mediastinal bleeding related to a parathyroid adenoma. The patient had a history of trauma to the left thorax with a fracture of two ribs. Ultrasonography and computer tomography revealed a nodule in the retrotracheal space and hematoma of the bilateral trachea and thorax. Laboratory examinations revealed significant hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and a high level of intact parat

From fetus to adult--an allometric analysis of the giraffe vertebral column.

As mammalian cervical vertebral count is almost always limited to seven, the vertebral column of the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) provides an interesting study on scaling and adaptation to shape in light of these constraints. We have defined and described the growth rates of the lengths, widths, and heights of the vertebrae from fetal through neonatal life to maturity. We found that the disproportionate elongation of the cervical vertebrae is not a fetal process but occurs after birth, and that each cervical (C2-C7) vertebrae elongates at the same rate. C7 is able to specialize toward elon

[One case report of SAPHO syndrome and literature review].

To study the clinical features and diagnosis of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis syndrome (SAPHO) syndrome. One case of SAPHO syndrome was reported and the related data of SAPHO syndrome were reviewed. The main clinical features of the patient were articulatio carpi synovitis, acne, cervical rib hyperostosis, articulatio sternoclavicularis and osteitis, So the diagnosis of SAPHO syndrome was made. Though SAPHO syndrome is rare with yet unknown prevalence, it still can be seen in clinical practice, and can be diagnosed by careful examination.

The etiology and surgical management of tracheal collapse in calves.

The mean ages of 10 calves with tracheal collapse were 2.7 weeks at onset of clinical signs and 9.4 weeks at presentation for treatment. Inspiratory and expiratory dyspnea and stunted growth were the most common clinical signs. There were abnormalities of the cranial ribs consistent with healing fractures with redundant callus in eight lateral thoracic radiographs. Tracheal collapse in calves may result from cranial thoracic trauma during or soon after birth. Short polypropylene ring prostheses made from 60 ml syringe barrels were placed on the tracheas of four calves with cervical tracheal co

Subclavicular approach to first rib resection.

As discussed by Urschel [13], 50 to 70 percent of patients with symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome may be treated conservatively by nonsurgical methods. Patients who still have symptoms after years of such therapy are referred to us for surgical treatment. Failure to obtain symptomatic relief after scalenotomy alone [8] caused us to abandon this treatment. The advantages of the subclavicular approach to first rib resection are as follows: (1) The operation is easy and fast. (2) There is good visibility in the operative field. (3) The neurovascular bundle to the arm lies cephalad and out of h

Cervical spine fractures with major associated trauma.

A detailed review of 88 consecutive patients placed in skeletal tong traction for cervical fractures by the University of Louisville Neurosurgical Service during a 5-year period from July 1, 1979, through June 30, 1984, was carried out. Of this group, 60% of the patients had a major associated injury consisting of major facial and skull fractures, cerebral contusions or intracerebral blood clots, cardiac or pulmonary contusions, major thoracic injuries including rib fractures and hemo- or pneumothoraces, intra-abdominal injuries, and major extremity fractures. An additional 24% of the patients

Menkes Disease Mimicking Child Abuse.

Althouygh Menkes disease has well-recognized neurologic, developmental, and cutaneous features, the initial presentation may resemble child abuse. We describe a 5-month-old boy with multiple fractures indicative of nonaccidental trauma who was ultimately diagnosed with Menkes disease. Copper deficiency leads to connective tissue abnormalities and may result in subdural hematomas, wormian bones, cervical spine defects, rib fractures, and spurring of the long bone metaphyses. Several of these findings, including fractures and subdural hematomas, may be misinterpreted as child abuse.
