Risk factors for distal junctional failure following three-column osteotomy for cervical deformity correction.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors for distal junctional failure (DJF) following three-column osteotomy (3CO) for the correction of cervical deformity. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent a cervical or upper thoracic 3CO for cervical deformity correction by the senior author from 2008 to 2023. The main outcome of interest was DJF, defined as revision surgery with extension of the distal end of the fusion construct. Patients were excluded if the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) was the sacrum/pelvis, and if patients had prio

Measurement of the vertebral canal dimensions of the neck of the rat with a comparison to the human.

The aim of this study was to determine the dimensions of the vertebral canal in the neck of the rat, because little is known about the morphology of the rat's cervical spine. A comparison then was made to the vertebral canal in the neck of the human. In part 1 of this study, we determined the precision of three different methods to measure the vertebral canal. The error (coefficient of variation) in these methods was found to range from 1 to 8%. In part 2, we used a computer-based system to measure digital images of the vertebra and determined the anterior to posterior and the transverse verte

A Concomitant Occurrence of the Atlantoaxial Subluxation with Rare Vertebral Formation and Segmentation Defects.

An atlantoaxial subluxation from the unstable Os odontoideum by the failure of proper integrations between the embryological somites might be a commonly reported pathology. However, its suspicious origin or paralleled occurrence with other congenital anomalies of vertebral body might be a relatively rare phenomenon. The authors present two cases, who simply presented with clinical signs of prolonged, intractable cervicalgia without any neurological deficits, revealed this rare feature of C1-2 subluxation from the unstable, orthotropic type of Os odontoideum that coincide with congenitally fuse

Probable torticollis revealed in decapitated skull.

The skeletal features of a moderately decomposed decapitated head recovered in 1993 are consistent with torticollis (wryneck) and inconsistent with other possible syndromes. Asymmetries of the face, cranial vault, mandible, and cervical vertebrae closely resemble published cases of paleopathological and recent torticollis. The laterally directed left occipital condyle and articulation of the basicranium and cervical vertebrae indicate that the head was tipped toward the left shoulder. Right-left asymmetries of areas of muscular attachments are compatible with a leftward head deviation. Mild ar…

Intravertebral vs. intervertebral integration and modularity in the vertebral column of mammalian carnivorans.

The vertebral column is a multicomponent structure whose organization results from developmental and functional demands. According to their … strate a significant intravertebral modular signal between the centrum and neural spine in all post-cervical vertebrae, including the boundary vertebrae among intervertebral modules. However, the strength of intravertebral integration decreases at the boundary vertebrae. We also found a significant correlation between the degree of intravertebral integration and int …

Cervical myositis ossificans traumatica: a rare location.

An unusual case of myositis ossificans traumatica lesion located in the paraspinal region is reported. Despite the contiguity of the lesion with the cervical vertebrae and ominous appearance of the biopsy material, the history of antecedent trauma and computed tomography findings allowed preoperative accurate diagnosis. To our knowledge, myositis ossificans traumatica located in the cervical paraspinal region is very rare.

Assessment of humaneness using gunshot targeting the brain and cervical spine for cervid depopulation under field conditions.

Population reduction or eradication of domestic or non-domestic species may be required to address their impacts on the environment, other species, or human interests. Firearms are often used to accomplish these practical management objectives, and there is increased concern that the methods used may compromise animal welfare. We document the accuracy and humaneness of gunshot placement to the brain and cervical vertebrae of Philippine deer (Rusa marianna) on Guam during depopulation activities as a model for meeting AVMA standards of euthanasia under field conditions (e.g., animal is not in h…

Application of 18F-NaF-PET/CT in assessing age-related changes in the cervical spine.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylosis is the degeneration of cervical spine often associated with aging and neck pain. As the degenerative changes are coupled with altered osteoblastic activity, imaging modalities sensitive to such molecular changes could be valuable for clinical assessment, disease prophylaxis, and monitoring early therapy response. In this study, we examined the role of 18F-sodium fluoride-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-NaF-PET/CT) in detecting age-associated changes in the cervical spine of an adult population with broad age spectrum. METHODS: In this ret

Electrical stimulation over the human vertebral column: which neural elements are excited?

Supramaximal percutaneous electrical stimuli applied over the human cervical vertebral column produce maximal compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) in abductor digiti minimi. It is important to know which neural elements are excited by these stimuli and experiments were performed to answer this question. With stimulating electrodes placed progressively lateral to the midline, submaximal CMAPs with the same latency are produced. With shocks over the cervical vertebrae in the midline, the threshold for excitation of arm muscles is much lower than for excitation of leg muscles. Comparison of …

The ossification of the vertebral column, thorax and sternum in the quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The ossification centers onset of the quail vertebrae, ribs, and sternum in embryos and hatchling birds was studied. Specimens were cleared, stained with Alcian Blue and Alizarin Red S and examined using stereomicroscope. The chondral rudiments of the vertebrae were observed at the 6th day of incubation (E6). The osteogenesis of the vertebrae was accomplished with both perichondral and endochondral ossifications. The cervical vertebrae began to ossify at E9-E10, whereas the thoracic ones began at E10-E11. The synsacral vertebrae began to ossify at E11-E13. In the caudal vertebrae, ossification…
