Recent evidence has shown that translocation frequencies decline over time. This phenomenon might be explained by the co-occurrence of translocations in cells that also contain dicentrics, in which case translocations would be eliminated as a by-product of selection against dicentrics. Chronic exposure to ionizing radiation at dose-rates of 1.7 to 13.5 cGy/day has some distinctive features among which the development of radiation affection at the dose rate of 13.5 cGy/day is the main one. At lesser dose rates no qualitative changes in the causes of the animals' death were noted while their quantitative relationship was impaired. The increase in the tumor occurrence was registered at the dose-rate of 3.5 cGy/day. The average life of animals in all groups under study was much shorter than in the controls.

We studied the effect an alkali-metal ion exercised on the rate of entry of another alkali-metal ion into frog sartorius muscle cells and their models (i.e., ion exchange resin and sheep's wool). To evaluate the inhalation toxicity of Ga2O3, F344 rats were exposed nose-only to 0.2 micron Ga2O3 particles 2 h/day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks. The exposure concentration was 23 +/- 5 mg/m3 (mean +/- SD) resulting in lung burdens of 0.8 +/- 0.1 mg Ga2O3/lung (mean +/- SE) at the end of 4 weeks of exposure. Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of exposed rats showed marked responses. One day after termination of exposure, lactate dehydrogenase was increased 6-fold, and the lysosomal enzyme, beta-glucuronidase, was increased 38-fold in rats exposed to Ga2O3 compared to sham exposed controls.

The results of radiotherapy in carcinoma of the cervix stages I and II at the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC) in the period between 1975 and 1980 were analyzed. The failure rate was 13/58 (22.4%). While the failure was 8% (3/36) in ectocervical cancer it was 45% (10/22) in endocervical cancer. The difference was statistically significant to a p value of 0.001. Ten of 13 failure cases (77%) had involvement of the endocervix. A modification of the microdissection technique of Hanssen was utilized in dogs to measure superficial (SNGFR) and juxtamedullary nephron filtration rate (JMGFR) in control and saline-expanded dogs. During control studies SNGFR was 60+/-4 and JMGFR was 72+/-5 nl/min. During saline loading SNGFR was 74+/-8 and JMGFR was 65+/-6 nl/min.
