On April 21, 2006, increases in overdoses were reported among illicit drug users in Camden, New Jersey, via the CDC Epidemic Information Exchange (Epi-X). This alert elicited reports of similar increases in overdoses in other parts of New Jersey, and in Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Candida auris emerged in Chicago, IL, USA, in 2016 and has since become endemic. We used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of 494 isolates, epidemiologic metadata and patient transfer data to describe the transmission of C. auris among Chicago healthcare facilities between 2016 and 2021. This manuscript is based on an invitation lecture entitled "The Year in Pituitary" presented at the Combined 94th Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society and of the International Congress of Endocrinology in Chicago, Illinois, on June 24, 2014. The purpose is to highlight the major advances in the pathogenesis and management of pituitary disease. The papers selected were published from major journals between January 2013 and June 2014. The material covered basic to clinical advances across pathogenesis, epidemiology, and therapy in pituitary medicine.

The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound convened a panel of specialists from gynecology, radiology, and pathology to arrive at a consensus regarding the management of ovarian and other adnexal cysts imaged sonographically in asymptomatic women. The panel met in Chicago, Ill, on October 27-28, 2009, and drafted this consensus statement. The recommendations in this statement are based on analysis of current literature and common practice strategies, and are thought to represent a reasonable approach to asymptomatic ovarian and other adnexal cysts imaged at ultrasonography.

The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) is an NIH-funded, multidisciplinary, longitudinal observational study of middle-aged U.S. women of multiple ethnicities in or near Boston, Newark, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Oakland, and Los Angeles. SWAN measures multiple variables annually, including spine and hip areal bone mineral density (aBMD), serum and urine indices of bone remodeling, and pituitary, ovarian, and adrenal hormones. This chapter outlines the findings of the SWAN study so far.

Equine-origin H3N8 has circulated in dogs in the United States since 1999. A genetically and antigenically distinct avian-origin H3N2 canine influenza was detected in March of 2015 in Chicago, Illinois. Subsequent outbreaks were reported with over 1000 dogs in the Midwest affected followed by 23 additional states with detections within 5 months. The potential for canine-to-swine transmission was unknown. Experimental infection in pigs showed this virus does not replicate efficiently in swine.

Blastomycosis is an acute or chronic primary infection of the respiratory system, endemic in North America (United States of America and Canada), Africa and Asia. We report a case in Mexico, in a three years old child who had been born in California and lived in Chicago, U.S.A. The patient presented pulmonary symptoms prior to development of a skin ulcer. Blastomyces dermatitidis was identified by mycological and molecular procedures. The patient was successfully treated with amphotericin B, oral ketoconazole and itraconazole.

The advancement of women in surgery has seen tremendous progress over the past century. Among the many physicians who paved the way for women in surgery is Dr. Olga Jonasson, a Chicago-based transplant surgeon who performed the first kidney transplantation in the state of Illinois in 1969. Her passion for service and drive for greater female representation in medicine was massively influential to the field. Aspiring female physicians are forever indebted to the efforts of Dr. Jonasson and the bold women who came before us.

Group B beta hemolytic streptococcal infection of the newborn, acquired from the maternal genital tract, has emerged as an important cause of morbidity and mortality. In that the risk to the infant for colonization and infection may relate to the degree of streptococcal exposure, a semiquantitative determination of genital tract colonization was made in 210 pregnant women. A precise diagnosis is key to the successful treatment of achalasia. Barium swallow, upper endoscopy and high-resolution manometry provide the necessary information about a patient's anatomy, absence of other diseases, and type of achalasia (I, II, III). High-resolution manometry also has prognostic value, the best results of treatment being obtained in type II achalasia according to the Chicago classification. Abdominal CT scanning and endoscopic ultrasound might be warranted if an underlying malignancy is suspected.

Trauma is a significant contributor to maternal and fetal morbidity and death in the United States. The nature of the evaluation of the pregnant trauma patient is intense and multidisciplinary. Although it invites unique opportunities for collaboration with our surgical colleagues, it also increases the risk of misunderstanding and conflict. We present in this Viewpoint a standardized fetal trauma survey that seamlessly integrates with Advanced Trauma Life Support (American College of Surgeons, Chicago, IL) in an effort to create a more reliable and collaborative experience in the trauma room.

The common supratentorial congenital malformations of the brain were analyzed with magnetic resonance (MR) at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago over a two-year period. Three hundred children with one or more of the following congenital malformations were imaged with MR: (1) dysgenesis of the corpus callosum; (2) holoprosencephaly; (3) migrational disorders; (4) cephaloceles; and (5) septo-optic dysplasia. The characteristic findings in each of these disorders are described based on the MR scans as well as the clinical spectrum.

Congenital heart disease patients, specifically with unbalanced atrioventricular septal defects and common atrioventricular valves requiring single ventricle palliation, have substantial morbidity and mortality. Atrioventricular valve regurgitation (AVVR) is associated with poor outcomes in single ventricle patients, and many of them require surgical treatment of AVVR in their lifetimes. We describe a unique case of transcatheter edge-to-edge valve repair using the MitraClip system (Abbott, Chicago, IL) in a single ventricle patient with severe common AVVR.
