Increased serum creatine phosphokinase in a child with bruising due to physical abuse.

Bruising is a frequent and often sentinel injury in children who are victims of physical abuse. Children who are evaluated in an emergency department for bruising, which may be due to abuse, present a challenge to physicians; the injuries themselves are medically minor and their severity can only be described qualitatively with photographs. Nonetheless, bruising in an infant or bruising in unusual locations in young children can indicate violence and risk. These children also present a challenge to the Child Protective Services system because the injuries generally resolve quickly without medi…

[Lessons of an unpunished child abuse].

Around 2000–2500, physically abused children get into the sight of child protective services in Hungary. However, the number of unrecognized cases can be a multiple of this number. Cases with physical injury or severe neglect are often first seen by healthcare providers or, rather, alone in many cases. The reporting willingness of healthcare workers is low, and they often fail to fulfill their obligation to report. Apart from the consequences of failing the reporting obligations, we want to draw attention to the preventive role of reporting. The one-and-a-half-year-old girl was taken to the lo…

The mental health of children in homeless families and their contact with health, education and social services.

Previous research indicates that children in homeless families have a high risk of physical and mental illness. This study reports the initial stage of a longitudinal research programme to measure the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among parents and children in homeless families. A sample of parents in 113 homeless families were interviewed within 2 weeks of admission to seven homeless centres in the City of Birmingham, and compared with a sample of 29 low-income families who were not homeless. Both sets of interviews used the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), the Communication Domain of

Emotional and Psychosocial Problems Encountered by Children Who Have Been Sexually Abused.

The current descriptive analysis sought to identify the emotional and psychosocial problems experienced by children who have been sexually abused. Of 518 children with a history of sexual abuse who applied to the Child Protection Center, 443 were included in the study. Approximately 71.6% of children were subject to sexual abuse entailing penetration, whereas 69% were subject to sexual abuse not entailing penetration. After-effects reported included despair (46.5%), fear of reoccurrence of the incident (52.8%), distrust of others (36.8%), difficulty sleeping (32.7%), negative expectations abou

Prenatal substance exposure and developmental outcomes at age 5: a population-based cohort of 260 000 children in New South Wales, Australia.

OBJECTIVES: We quantified the risk of developmental support needs at school entry among children with and without prenatal substance exposure, to inform service delivery initiatives in the first 2000 days of children's lives. METHODS: We assembled a cohort using population-level perinatal, birth registration, hospital and education data linked for the New South Wales Child E-Cohort. Children born 2008-2014, with Australian Early Development Census data collected 2015, 2018, 2021 (n=262 968), were grouped into children with and without prenatal substance exposure (using indicators in mother/ch

From evidence gaps to action: Strengthening surveillance, research and social safety nets to address child maltreatment.

The COVID-19 pandemic increased risk factors for family violence, including economic hardship, caregiver stress, social isolation, and service disruptions. Despite extensive research over the past five years, evidence remains mixed on whether child maltreatment rates increased, decreased, or remained stable. This commentary synthesizes emerging findings, specifically highlighting two recent reviews in this special issue. Recommendations are suggested on ways to strengthen surveillance ecosystems that integrate administrative data and population-based surveys to generate timely, comprehensive,

Emergency contraception - a human rights issue.

Emergency contraception is the only resource that women can use to avoid becoming pregnant after having sexual intercourse without contraceptive protection. It could be a powerful means to prevent unwanted pregnancies and their devastating consequences for women's health, social wellbeing and life project, and for the unwanted child, if all people had ample access to good quality information, education and services for sexual and reproductive health. In spite of the preventive medicine value of emergency contraception, conservative sectors oppose its availability, appealing to moral values tha

The Economic Burden of Violence against Children in South Africa.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the economic burden of violence against children in South Africa. We assembled summative estimates of lifetime prevalence, calculated the magnitude of associations with negative outcomes, and thereby estimated the economic burden of violence against children. According to our calculations, 2.3 million and 84,287 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost in South Africa in 2015 were attributable to nonfatal and fatal violence against children, respectively. The estimated economic value of DALYs lost to violence against children (including both fatal a

"I'm Doing My Part, I Just Need Help From the Community": Intervention Implications of Foster and Adoptive Parents' Experiences Raising Children and Young Adults With FASD.

Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have high rates of health care service utilization. It is vital that health care professionals understand FASD and associated family experiences to strengthen their ability to respond to family needs and tailor family-focused interventions. This study included 24 foster and adoptive parents of children and adults (aged 3-33 years) with FASD. Data were collected via individual interviews and focus groups and analyzed thematically. Consistent with a developmental psychopathology perspective, parents' experiences interacted with the individ

Parental Substance Use Disorder and the Rise in Children Being Raised by Grandparents: Focusing on Children's Needs and Improving Outcomes.

The occurrence of children being raised solely by their grandparents has steadily risen in the past decade prompted by parental substance use disorder (SUD) and associated incarceration and death. These families, especially children, are a vulnerable population with unique needs. Nurses should be cognizant of the needs, risk factors, and protective factors often associated with this population. Meanwhile, the literature to date mostly focuses on grandparents. School and pediatric nurses, specifically, are in an advantageous position to help support these families and help foster better child o

Technology Matters: Using digital mental health tools for children and young people - clinical implications of neurorights.

The rapid expansion of digital mental health technologies is transforming child and adolescent mental health services through tools such as wearable devices, behavioural monitoring, predictive algorithms and digital interventions. While these innovations offer opportunities for earlier detection, personalised care and improved continuity of support, they also raise important ethical and developmental challenges. Current neurorights frameworks have emerged to protect mental privacy, autonomy, personal identity and agency in response to advances in neuroscience and neurotechnology. However, thes

Maternal Emotional Support following the Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse: A Qualitative Study.

Non-offending maternal (NOM) support is considered one of the most important protective factors in facilitating better victim adjustment following the disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA). However, recent findings have led authors to conclude that NOM support has yet to be properly conceptualized and operationalized within the CSA literature. Emotional support is one dimension that has consistently emerged in studies attempting to reconceptualize NOM support but is a concept which also requires further theoretical investigation. Researchers interviewed 22 mothers of children aged 6-12 years
