Treatment of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) is a general term for chronic, irreversible lung disease that combines qualities of emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The standard definition of chronic bronchitis is a productive cough for three months per year (for at least two consecutive years) without an underlying aetiology. Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB) represents a common complaint that leads patients to seek medical attention. COPD and AECB are directly responsible for the overuse of antibiotics in the developed world. Fifty per cent of exacerbations have either viral or non-in

[Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection, as evaluated by molecular biology methods].

BACKGROUND: To determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in our area by molecular methods. METHODS: We describe the combined results of three studies carried out in the city of Barcelona including a total of 408 women considered to be at high risk for acquiring a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The first study was performed in 94 women attended at a public STD clinic located downtown, the second in 112 women attended at the Hospital Clinic and the third in 202 women attended at Hospital Vall d'Hebron (both third-level hospitals). In the first and third study endocervical

[The role of chlamydia trachomatis infection in CIN and cervical cancer development].

The paper contains a review of the literature on the correlation between Chlamydia trachomatis infection and CIN as well as invasive cervical cancer. This infection is not only responsible for inflammation (very often occult) in the upper genital tract and PID but also is probably one of the causes of cervical hypertrophy. In high percentage of CIN Chlamydia trachomatis infection is present. This pathogen especially serotype G, I and D is strongly associated with development of invasive cervical cancer.

Intra-articular co-infection by Borrelia burgdorferi and Chlamydia trachomatis.

OBJECTIVE: Chlamydia trachomatis and Borrelia burgdorferi infections are frequently the cause of unexplained oligoarthritis, as shown by identification of bacteria specific DNA in joint material from patients with reactive arthritis, Lyme arthritis, and undifferentiated oligoarthritis. The aim of this study was to determine whether the two organisms occur simultaneously in joint material from patients with arthritis. METHODS: Seventy six patients with unexplained arthritis were prospectively studied. Synovial fluid was obtained from all patients and examined for DNA from C trachomatis and B b

Evidence for infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae in a subgroup of patients with multiple sclerosis.

In a pilot study, we identified Chlamydia pneumoniae in the cerebrospinal fluid by polymerase chain reaction in 5 of 10 patients with definite multiple sclerosis (MS). In a second series, 2 of 20 patients with definite MS and 3 of 17 patients with possible/probable MS or MS variants, but none of 56 patients with other neurological, diseases were polymerase chain reaction-positive. We confirm that C. pneumoniae can be found in the cerebrospinal fluid of MS patients, but our rate of positive results is lower than in a recent report.

Chlamydia trachomatis infection mimicking testicular malignancy in a young man.

A young man with a low risk history for sexually transmitted diseases presented with an apparently longstanding, previously asymptomatic scrotal mass, highly suggestive of testicular malignancy on palpation. Ultrasound sited the lesion in the epididymis. Although there was no evidence of urethritis, chlamydia polymerase chain reaction testing was positive. Tumour markers were negative. Complete clinical and radiological response was achieved after a long course of doxycycline treatment, without surgical exploration of the scrotum, confirming the diagnosis of chlamydial epididymitis.

Chlamydia pneumoniae infection of the central nervous system in multiple sclerosis.

Our identification of Chlamydia pneumoniae in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a patient with multiple sclerosis (MS) led us to examine the incidence of this organism in the CSF from 17 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, 20 patients with progressive MS, and 27 patients with other neurological diseases (OND). CSF samples were examined for C pneumoniae by culture, polymerase chain reaction assays, and CSF immunoglobulin (Ig) reactivity with C pneumoniae elementary body antigens. C pneumoniae was isolated from CSF in 64% of MS patients versus 11% of OND controls. Polymerase chain reaction assa

Localization of chronic Chlamydia psittaci infection in the reproductive tract of sheep.

Twelve sheep experimentally infected with Chlamydia psittaci during pregnancy either aborted or gave birth to weak, low-birth-weight lambs as a result of uteroplacental infection. Subsequently, these ewes excreted chlamydial antigen from their reproductive tracts during estrus. About 1 year after pregnancy failure, immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction were used to examine sections of vagina, uterus, and oviduct for evidence of C. psittaci. Four noninfected control ewes were similarly examined. C. psittaci antigen or DNA was detected in vagina, uterus, and oviduct samples from chr

Prevalence of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in selected populations in China.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is an important pathogen of the urogenital tract. Numerous epidemiologic studies have reported on the prevalence of chlamydia world wide. However, the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in China has not been widely studied. GOAL OF THIS STUDY: To identify Chlamydia trachomatis in three distinct populations in China. Urogenital specimens were collected from men with no prior history of sexual intercourse (virgin), men seen at a sexually transmitted disease clinic, and female prostitutes. STUDY DESIGN: Two-hundred urethral swabs were collected from group one,

The activity of azithromycin on the infectivity of Chlamydia trachomatis in human amniotic cells.

The effects of azithromycin on the infectivity and growth of Chlamydia trachomatis were investigated in primary human amniotic epithelial cells. Infection was prevented when cultures were exposed to the drug 6 h after inoculation and growth was completely inhibited when the drug was added to cultures 24, 48, 72 h or 7 days after infection. The same inhibition was observed at 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L. Ultrastructural observations depicted interruption in the growth cycle of the chlamydia and ghost-like envelopes were present in the near empty inclusions. Azithromycin is effective in inhibiting chl

Repeated and persistent infection with Chlamydia and the development of chronic inflammation and disease.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an important human pathogen that mediates disease processes capable of inflicting permanent damage. Aggressive inflammatory responses to repeated infections, and to a persistent form of this intracellular bacterium, are thought to initiate the pathogenic events that lead to the debilitating sequelae of blinding trachoma and infertility.
