A new, simple and selective method for the analysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in foods by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is proposed. Several derivatising procedures based on the formation of an HMF silylated derivative using different reagents were studied. A high performance liquid chromatographic method was established for the determination of cinnabar in Zijinhong capsules using diethyldithiocarbamate (DEDTC) chelate. A Waters X-Terra C18 column was used with a mixture of methanol-0.01 mol/L Na2HPO4 (pH 7.5) (containing 0.01% DEDTC) (73:27, V/V) as the mobile phase and a detector set at 270 nm. The calibration curve was linear (r = 0. 999 6) in the range of 10.1 mg/L - 100.9 mg/L of Hg2+. The recoveries were 97.0% - 100.8% with RSDs of 1.8% - 2.3%.

The consolidation of a packed bed undergoing axial compression was studied in glass columns using an on-column visualization process. In this visualization process the refractive indices of the mobile phase (carbon tetrachloride) and the stationary phase (YMC C18 silica) matched perfectly, hence the otherwise opaque stationary phase became transparent to the eye. A sensitive and simple high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) assay was developed for the quantification of resiniferatoxin (RTX) in canine cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A reversed-phase C(18) column and acetonitrile in 0.02 M NaH(2)PO(4) as mobile phase provided satisfactory resolution for RTX analysis. A new fuzzy regression algorithm was successfully applied to calibration in thin-layer chromatography (TLC)/densitometry. Different regression techniques were also considered, and objective quality coefficients were used for evaluation of the results. Depending on the structure of the data, the fuzzy procedure can improve the results dramatically. From the results reported in this paper and other unpublished results, it appears clear that the calibration procedure based on fuzzy regression is the most suitable regression method in quantitative TLC.

The MFE-Vinicol column (Análisis Vínicos; Spain) was developed for the analysis of alcoholic beverages. Fusel alcohols at low concentrations, including 2-propanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, and ethyl butyrate, are determined by a single temperature-programmed analysis using this column. This column has important advantages over the official columns recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists and other official methods for this kind of analysis.

Gas chromatography has the potential to be a very fast method of air monitoring in the workplace and the community. The use of "fast" gas chromatographic (GC) instrumentation and methods may allow the completion of analyses in less than 10 sec when a flame ionization detector is used and in less than 30 sec when an electron capture detector is used. In this study, the fast GC system was evaluated as an air-monitoring tool for 41 different organic vapors at concentrations as low as 0.1 ppb.
