Multiplanar metrizamide-enhanced CT imaging of the foramen magnum.

Definition of masses and malformations at the foramen magnum has been less than optimal with traditional radiographic techniques. The use of … iomas. Six cases of syringomyelia, a large posterior-fossa subarachnoid cyst, and an anomaly of the cisterna magna were also diagnosed. Sagittal and coronal images were beneficial in defining tonsillar position, configuration of the fourth ventricle, and the relations of mass lesions to the spinal canal and subarachnoid space. Metrizamide CT cisternography provi …

High-resolution CISS MR imaging with and without contrast for evaluation of the upper cranial nerves: segmental anatomy and selected pathologic conditions of the cisternal through extraforaminal segments.

The authors review the course and appearance of the major segments of the upper cranial nerves from their apparent origin at the brainstem through the proximal extraforaminal region, focusing on the imaging and anatomic features of particular relevance to high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging evaluation. Selected pathologic entities are included in the discussion of the corresponding cranial nerve segments for illustrative purposes.

Inhibition of cerebral vasospasm by intracranial delivery of ibuprofen from a controlled-release polymer in a rabbit model of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECT: Leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions may play a role in the development of cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) because the extravasation of circulating leukocytes into the periadventitial space within 24 hours after the hemorrhage appears to be a critical event in this process. Ibuprofen is an antiinflammatory agent that inhibits the expression of specific cell adhesion molecules and, consequently, disrupts leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions. The authors investigated the efficacy of ibuprofen delivered locally from controlled-release polymers in th

[Preventive effect on intracranial arterial vasospasm using combined ventriculo-cisternal and cisternal drainage (author's transl)].

Cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is one of the most important problems in the treatment of ruptured intracranial aneurysms. Several reports have recently emphasized that oxyHb from erythrocytes might be responsible for vasospasm. In this study, the hem-oxygenase which converts oxyHb to bilirubin was analyzed and the increase of hem-oxygenase in the CSF after SAH was reconfirmed. In 23 cases of ruptured intracranial aneurysms, combined ventriculo-cisternal drainage and cisternal drainage designed by us was performed after clipping of aneurysms in early stage after rupt

Papilloedema, CSF pressure, and CSF flow in cerebral tumours.

The presence or absence of papilloedema and the cisternal CSF pressure were compared with the RIHSA cisternograms in 24 patients with supratenotorial tumours. It was found that severe subarachnoid obstruction of CSF flow, leading to impaired CSF absorption at the superior sagittal sinus, was the main cause of raised CSF pressure and papilloedema associated with supratentorial tumours.

Perivascular spaces around arteries exceed perivenous spaces in the mouse brain.

The perivascular space (PVS) surrounds cerebral blood vessels and plays an important role in clearing waste products from the brain. Their anatomy and function have been described for arteries, but PVS around veins remain poorly characterized. Using in vivo 2-photon imaging in mice, we determined the size of the PVS around arteries and veins, and their connection with the subarachnoid space. After infusion of 70 kD FITC-dextran into the cerebrospinal fluid via the cisterna magna, labeled PVS were evident around arteries, but veins showed less frequent labeling of the PVS. The size of the PVS c…

Changes in arterial myocyte excitability induced by subarachnoid hemorrhage in a rat model.

Aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a neurovascular disease produced by the rupture of the cerebral arteries and the extravasation of blood to the subarachnoid space and is accompanied by severe comorbidities. Secondarily associated vasospasm is one of the main side effects after hydrocephalus and possible rebleeding. Here, we analyze the alterations in function in the arteries of a rat model of SAH. For this, autologous blood was injected into the cisterna magna. We performed electrophysiological, microfluorimetric, and molecular biology experiments at different times after SAH to de…

We dissect the arachnoid membrane along the accessory nerve from the cisterna magna to the glossopharyngeal nerve. When we are able to identify the root exit zone (REZ) of the FN near the brainstem, we place the ICFN SE on it. However, when a large tumor covers the REZ, we have to debulk the tumor to create a space between the tumo …

Cerebral structures were normal except for 2 cases showing a cisterna magna slightly decreased in size. In the remaining 22 cases MMC was confirmed, with cerebral anomalies present in 21/22 cases (95.5%). CONCLUSION: LDM is a form of closed dysraphism accessible to prenatal diagnosis by US that may mimic MMC. Considering t …

Histological evidence of delayed ischemic brain tissue damage in the rat double-hemorrhage model.

The rat double-SAH model is one of the standard models to simulate delayed cerebral vasospasm (CVS) in humans. However, the proof of delayed ischemic brain damage is missing so far. Our objective was, therefore, to determine histological changes in correlation with the development of symptomatic and perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) proven CVS in this animal model. CVS was induced by injection of autologous blood in the cisterna magna of 22 Sprague-Dawley rats. Histological changes were analyzed on day 3 and day 5. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was assessed by PWI at 3 tesla magnetic resonance (MR)…

Expression change of interleukin-8 gene in rabbit basilar artery after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression change of interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene in the basilar artery of rabbit and the effect of IL-8 on the development of cerebral vasospasm induced by experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: Thirty five healthy Japanese White Rabbits were randomly divided into saline-control group and experimental group. The experimental group was subdivided into four groups, representing day 1, 4, 7 and 14 after the first blood injection of SAH. The delayed cerebral vasospasm (DCVS) model was established by double injection of autologous blood into the cisterna magna. …

Comparison between one- and two-hemorrhage models of cerebral vasospasm in rabbits.

Injection of blood into the cisterna magna is one of the most frequently used methods to produce subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) models in animals. Although the two-hemorrhage model of vasospasm is frequently used in canine and rat models, most studies with rabbits only use the one-hemorrhage model. In the present study, we accomplished a side-by-side comparison between one- and two-hemorrhage models in rabbits. A total of 38 rabbits were randomly divided into three groups, i.e. control group (n = 5), one (n = 15)- and two (n = 18)-hemorrhage model groups. The degree of cerebral vasospasm, the t…

Tin-protoporphyrin prevents experimental superficial siderosis in rabbits.

Superficial siderosis of the human central nervous system is caused by small continuous or recurrent subarachnoid hemorrhages that lead to the destructive deposition of hemosiderin. The excessive tissue iron derives from heme that is oxidized in a rate-limiting step by the enzyme heme oxygenase (HO), and especially the inducible form, HO-1. We postulated that competitive inhibition of HO by tin-protoporphyrin IX (SnPP) could prevent experimental superficial siderosis. Since synthetic metalloporphyrins do not cross the blood-brain barrier, SnPP was delivered directly into the cisterna magna. Ra…

Blood-brain barrier disturbance following subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbits.

We studied disruption of the blood-brain barrier after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage induced by an injection of 4 ml autologous arterial blood into the cisterna magna of rabbits. The animals were killed at 40 minutes, 6 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, or 6 days after subarachnoid hemorrhage. We assessed the integrity of the barrier function of intraparenchymal vessels in the ventral brain stem and cerebral hemispheres morphologically with transmission electron microscopy, using horseradish peroxidase as a tracer. In the ventral brain stem, which was in direct contact with the cisternal cl…
