Cesium removal from contaminated montmorillonite using ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and Freezing-Thawing process.

The unexpected nuclear accidents and uncontrolled leakages of radioactive cesium (137Cs) can contaminate the soils nearby nuclear power plants (NPPs). Radioactive 137Cs ions (Cs+) tend to strongly sorb on 2:1 phyllosilicate clay minerals, especially expandable clay minerals such as montmorillonite (MMT) and vermiculite. However, removal of 137Cs from the contaminated soils has been relatively inefficient due to the strong and irreversible interaction of Cs with the frayed edge sites in clays. This study employs the intercalation of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME) and the Freezing-Thawin…

Dissolution of Mn-bearing dolomite drives elevated Cr(VI) occurrence in a Permian redbed aquifer.

Municipalities in central Oklahoma, U.S.A. increasingly rely on water drawn from the Central Oklahoma Aquifer (COA) as surface water resourc … s, and microscale elemental analyses. Results demonstrate most COA Cr is contained in Fe oxides and clays as isomorphic substitutions for Fe(III). Analyses of regional groundwater data, including hierarchical clustering methods and GIS, demonstrate the most intense Cr(VI) occurrence is linked to cation exchange with Na-clays at depth. Cation exchange a …

Varus-Tilted Distal Tibial Plafond Is a Risk Factor for Recurrent Ankle Instability After Arthroscopic Lateral Ankle Ligament Repair.

BACKGROUND: Although varus-tilted distal tibial deformity is an established risk factor for chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI), no studies have reported whether this deformity influences ankle instability after arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament repair (ALLR) for CLAI. METHODS: A total of 57 ankles from 57 patients who underwent ALLR for CLAI were retrospectively analyzed. Tibial articular surface (TAS) angles were measured on preoperative plain radiograph. After 12 months of follow-up, recurrent ankle instability and talar tilt angles on stress radiograph were evaluated as outcomes. R

Effects of electrokinetics and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide [CTAB] on the hydrocarbon removal and retention from contaminated soils.

Hydrocarbon contaminated soil and groundwater is considered to be a leading cause for increased health risk and environmental contamination. Therefore, an efficient technique is needed to retard the movement or enhance the removal of the contaminant depending on the remediation objective. The goals of this study were to evaluate the impact of the addition of a cationic surfactant on the movement of hydrocarbons within a contaminated clay soil subjected to electrokinetic treatment. Water-flushing and surfactant-flushing experiments were conducted on one-dimensional soil columns. The model diese…

Hazardous jarosite use in developing non-hazardous product for engineering application.

Jarosite released from zinc metal extraction process is hazardous in nature and its world wide disposal has become a major environmental concern. In this study, an attempt has been made to immobilise and recycle the jarosite released from Hindustan Zinc Limited, India, using CCRs, so called fly ash, and clay soil. Results revealed that the particle size of jarosite was finer than that of CCRs and had higher porosity and water holding capacity due to fine textured materials resulting in high surface area (10,496.18 +/- 30.90 cm(2)/g). Jarosite contain higher concentration of toxic elements (lea…

Surfactant-modified nanoclay exhibits an antiviral activity with high potency and broad spectrum.

UNLABELLED: Nanomaterials have the characteristics associated with high surface-to-volume ratios and have been explored for their antiviral activity. Despite some success, cytotoxicity has been an issue in nanomaterial-based antiviral strategies. We previously developed a novel method to fully exfoliate montmorillonite clay to generate the most fundamental units of nanoscale silicate platelet (NSP). We further modified NSP by capping with various surfactants and found that the surfactant-modified NSP (NSQ) was less cytotoxic. In this study, we tested the antiviral potentials of a series of nat…

Plant secondary metabolites in beef cattle diets affect reactive nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions during manure soil application: A laboratory incubation.

Feed additives in beef cattle diets can reduce enteric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, subsequent effects on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) after land application of manure from additive-fed animals remain largely unknown. In this study, manure (mainly feces) from beef cattle fed either an un-supplemented diet (UN) or a diet containing one of two essential oil-based feed additives, Agolin® (AG; 1 g/steer/day) or Mootral® (MT; 23.5 g/steer/day), were collected and applied to soils with different textures (clay or sandy loam). The soil-feces mixtures were incubated in a completely ran…

Role of silicate-rich and silicate-less industrial solid wastes in the physicomechanical properties and durability of low quality metakaolin-blended cement.

Although calcined clay-blended cement offers higher performance and durability compared to neat Portland cement (PC), its extensive use of natural clay leads to the depletion of natural non-renewable resources. To address this concern, this study focuses on the utilization of supplementary cementitious materials-based waste products as a substitute for PC. The blended cement was optimized with a low replacement level of 10 wt.% calcined Fanja clay (FNJ) as a low-grade metakaolin (MK) and 90 wt.% PC. Various types of industrial solid wastes (ISWs) were incorporated into the PC-FNJ blend in plac…

Accumulation and distribution of cadmium at organic-mineral micro-interfaces across soil aggregates.

Soil amendments are crucial in regulating cadmium (Cd) distribution as aggregates of varying sizes have different capacities to retain soil … e mineral and microbial amendments facilitated the Cd transfer from the macroaggregates to the silt+clay fraction, while the organic amendment increased the Cd loading in the macroaggregates. Additionally, the mineral and microbial amendments reduced the binding of Fe oxides with microbial-derived peptides in the macroaggregates and enhanced the intera …

A novel nZVI-bentonite nanocomposite to remove trichloroethene (TCE) from solution.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) based (nano)composites supported by clay mineral substrates are a promising technology for the in-situ remediation of groundwater and (sub)soils contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as trichloroethene (TCE). However, the physicochemical processes and interaction mechanisms between nZVI particles, clay minerals and TCE are poorly understood, yet. We immobilized nZVI particles on a commercial bentonite substrate to prepare a novel nZVI-B nanocomposite and tested its performance for TCE removal from solution against pure nZVI in batch reactors. The nZ…

Numerical investigation of the effects of excavation on piled embankments under static loading conditions.

This study investigates the influence of adjacent excavation on piled embankments constructed on soft clay, with emphasis on settlement mechanisms, soil arching, and load transfer under static loading. A three-dimensional coupled-consolidation finite element model was developed using a hypoplastic clay constitutive law to capture stiffness degradation and stress-path dependence. The analyses reveal that excavation induces significant differential settlement at the embankment crest and lateral pile displacements, with surcharge loading increasing overall crest settlement but simultaneously redu…

A ferroptosis-targeting ceria anchored halloysite as orally drug delivery system for radiation colitis therapy.

Radiation colitis is the leading cause of diarrhea and hematochezia in pelvic radiotherapy patients. This work advances the pathogenesis of radiation colitis from the perspective of ferroptosis. An oral Pickering emulsion is stabilized with halloysite clay nanotubes to alleviate radiation colitis by inhibiting ferroptosis. Ceria nanozyme grown in situ on nanotubes can scavenge reactive oxygen species, and deferiprone was loaded into the lumen of nanotubes to relieve iron stress. These two strategies effectively inhibit lipid peroxidation and rescue ferroptosis in the intestinal microenvironmen…
