A life cycle assessment of reprocessing face masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic led to threatening shortages in healthcare of medical products such as face masks. Due to this major impact on our healthcare society an initiative was conducted between March and July 2020 for reprocessing of face masks from 19 different hospitals. This exceptional opportunity was used to study the costs impact and the carbon footprint of reprocessed face masks relative to new disposable face masks. The aim of this study is to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess and compare the climate change impact of disposed versus reprocessed face masks. In total 18.166 h

Escalating competition in changing seas: baleen whales exploit killer whale prey herding.

Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are rapidly reshaping marine ecosystems, altering prey availability and predator interactions. Yet empirical evidence of how these relationships shift under changing conditions remains scarce. Drawing on over a decade of monitoring in a subarctic fjord system, we provide a rare insight into these dynamics. In northern Norway, the winter aggregation of herring (Clupea harengus) and their primary predator, the killer whale (Orcinus orca), has shifted northward under the combined influence of climate change and fishing pressure. This redistribution

A novel bioencapsulation strategy for delivering plant growth promoting bacteria via cotton seeds to improve crop yield and shelf stability.

Cotton is a vital cash crop in India that is predominantly cultivated in rainfed regions and is increasingly affected by climate change, which leads to poor seed germination and seedling establishment. To address these challenges and support sustainable agriculture, the current investigation aimed to develop and optimize bioencapsulated cotton seeds using plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) to enhance seed germination, bacterial viability, seed shelf life, and crop yield. The bioencapsulation process was optimized using Response Surface Methodology via inverse gelation with sodium alginate,

Elevation-structured viral ecological strategies along glacier-fed rivers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, a climate-vulnerable source of Asia's major rivers, harbors underexplored viral communities critical to ecosystem functions. By integrating 597 metagenomes from the Yangtze, Yellow, Lancang, and Yarlung Tsangpo rivers with 85 public available glacial metagenomes (Tibetan Glacier Genome and Gene catalog), we built the Glacier-to-River Virome Catalogue, encompassing 36,358 vOTUs and 897,250 viral protein clusters, to decode viral adaptation and ecological influence across elevation gradients. Our results reveal that high-altitude conditions favor viruses with elevated

Comparable Organic Aerosol Mass Enhancement during Photochemical and Dark Oxidation of Biomass Burning Emissions.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from wildfire/biomass-burning emissions (BB) represents a significant fraction of global SOA production. However, there are large uncertainties in representing BB-SOA in climate models. We studied the evolution of organic aerosols (OA) from burning three biomass samples─savannah grass, savannah wood, and boreal forest surface─under different combustion conditions and during daytime (photochemical oxidation) and nighttime (dark oxidation) aging in an atmospheric chamber. OA dominated the BB emissions by contributing ∼82-99% of the total PM1 mass. Atmospher

Global prevalence and risk factors of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in humans: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens. In this study, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of human E. bieneusi infection in endemic regions and analyze the various potential risk factors. A total of 75 studies were included. Among 31,644 individuals tested, 2,291 (6.59%) were E. bieneusi-positive. The highest prevalence of E. bieneusi in the male population was 5.50%. The prevalence of E. bieneusi in different age groups was varied, with 10.97% in teenagers. The prevalence of E. bieneusi in asymptomatic patients (6.49%) is signif

Perspective: Dimensions of Environment and Health in Arctic Communities.

In the Arctic, environment and health are linked in myriad ways. A key emphasis has been on numerous long-lived contaminants in traditional foods, particularly marine mammals, and their well-documented impacts on human, animal and environmental health ("One health approach"). More recent concerns for Indigenous communities focus on the (side) effects of the switch to a modern, processed diet, which is accompanied by a loss of tradition and emerging health impacts. Furthermore, the availability of traditional foods is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change, which also causes t

Microbiome modelling for post-mortem interval estimation across species and climates: swine analogues in a British summer and external validation in human donors from the USA.

Background Microbial clocks have shown high accuracy in estimating time since death, or post-mortem interval (PMI), across diverse contexts, including controlled laboratory settings, outdoor environments, and both human cadavers and animal models. However, the limited number of studies performed under different environmental and climatic conditions, particularly in Europe, restricts the broader applicability of these models, as data from distinct climates may not reliably translate across geographic regions. This study investigates the nasal thanatomicrobiome of pig carcasses exposed to outdoo

Multiscale Water Balance Analysis and Water Network Resilience Optimization in the Yellow River Basin.

As a core region for ecological security, food production, and energy supply in China, the hydrological cycle of the Yellow River Basin is being profoundly altered by climate change and intensive human activities, leading to growing systemic water scarcity and increasingly heterogeneous hydrological processes. However, the lack of long-term and high-resolution hydrological data has constrained the accurate characterization of multilayer water exchange processes among the atmosphere, surface water, and groundwater at the basin scale, thereby limiting the development of sustainable water resourc

Hydrochemical systematics and isotope (δ18O, δD and 3H) variations of aquifer system of southern Bengal Basin: implications for groundwater pollution.

Hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic traits of the groundwater in the Quaternary aquifer system in an urban-periurban locality within and encircling the Kolkata-Howrah twin city in the south Bengal Basin have been synthesised to explain the present- and paleo-hydrological processes, surface and groundwater interaction and mixing dynamics of contamination of groundwater. Rock-weathering, evaporation, ion-exchange and active mineral dissolution are the key processes commanding the groundwater chemistry. Freshwater flushing from the recharge zones had thinned the entrapped sea water which

Interplay Between Particle Size and Hierarchy of Zeolite ZSM-5 During the CO2 -to-aromatics Process.

The CO2 -to-aromatics process is a chemical reaction that converts carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into valuable petrochemical, i. e., aromatics (especially, benzene, toluene, and xylene) over the metal/zeolite bifunctional catalytic systems. These aromatics are used in producing plastics, fibers, and other industrial products, which are currently exclusively sourced from fossil-derived feedstocks. The significance of this process lies in its potential to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously producing valuable chemicals. Consequently, these CO2 -derived aromati

The adjoint of CMAQ.

An adjoint model for the internationally used Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling platform of the U.S. EPA is developed. The adjoint version for CMAQ (CMAQ-ADJ) provides the user community with forward (decoupled direct method or DDM) and backward (adjoint) sensitivity analysis capabilities. Current implementation is for gas-phase processes. Discrete adjoints are implemented for all processes with the exception of horizontal advection, for which, because of inherent discontinuities in the advection scheme, the continuous approach is superior. The adjoint of chemistry is constructe

Multiproxy Geochemical Reconstruction of Paleoenvironment and Its Control on Fine-Grained Sedimentation in the Da'anzhai Member of the Jurassic System, Sichuan Basin.

The origin of fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the Da'anzhai Member of the Lower Jurassic Ziliujing Formation in the Sichuan Basin, as well as their paleoenvironmental implications, remains a subject of ongoing debate. Studies on the sedimentary patterns of fine-grained components and quantitative analysis of paleoclimate remain limited. To effectively address this issue, in this work, the fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the Da'anzhai Member were considered as the research object, and petrological and multi-index geochemical investigations were conducted. From our analysis, the paleoenviron

Climate change and the emergence of Rift Valley fever virus: a pathological and environmental study of sheep jaundice in Egyptian slaughterhouses.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) and its link to sheep jaundice in Egypt highlights the growing impact of climate change on the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases. Shifting climatic patterns, such as rising temperatures and altered rainfall, have expanded mosquito habitats, enhancing RVFV transmission risks. These environmental shifts create ideal breeding conditions for the mosquitoes, increasing virus's transmission risk to both livestock and humans. Jaundice, a severe symptom resulting from RVFV infection, not only threatens livestock health but also poses sign

Green Wearable Sensors and Antennas for Bio-Medicine, Green Internet of Things, Energy Harvesting, and Communication Systems.

This paper presents innovations in green electronic and computing technologies. The importance and the status of the main subjects in green electronic and computing technologies are presented in this paper. In the last semicentennial, the planet suffered from rapid changes in climate. The planet is suffering from increasingly wild storms, hurricanes, typhoons, hard droughts, increases in seawater height, floods, seawater acidification, decreases in groundwater reserves, and increases in global temperatures. These climate changes may be irreversible if companies, organizations, governments, and

Quaternary Climatic Changes and Biogeographic Barriers Drove Codiversification in the Obligate Mutualism Between Camponotus laevigatus and Its Endosymbiont Blochmanniella.

Codiversification often arises when hosts and their endosymbionts share a linked evolutionary history, exhibit vertical transmission, or share ecological and biogeographic processes. Most studies on the codiversification of carpenter ants (genus Camponotus) have focused on the co-phylogeny of hosts and endosymbionts across multiple species; however, no studies have examined the intraspecific population-level phylogeographic patterns of codiversification within Camponotus. California has been a geographic focus for phylogeographic studies due to its high endemism and complex geographic structur

Occurrence, temporal variation, and meteorological drivers of airborne fungal spores in Laoag City, northern Philippines.

Airborne fungal spores are major constituents of atmospheric bioaerosols that influence environmental exposure, ecosystem processes, and respiratory health. Despite their ecological and public health significance, long-term outdoor monitoring data describing their temporal dynamics and relationships with meteorological conditions remain limited in Southeast Asia. This study provides the first aeromycological assessment of airborne fungal spores in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, northern Philippines, a coastal region influenced by monsoon climatic conditions. Airborne spore concentrations were monit

Nitrogen-Centric Molecular Mechanisms in Crop Plants Under Elevated CO2: Interactions, Responses, and Implications.

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is transforming the climate space in which plants grow, severely affecting crop physiology and crop productivity. Elevated CO2 enhances photosynthesis and biomass; however, it can nitrogen (N) metabolism, inhibiting the nutritional value and the yield capacity of crops. The most important central N-regulated protein machineries are: transporters, nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and urease which control N assimilation, distribution and remobilization in crop plants. With high CO2
