Massed Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (mBCBT) for Suicide Prevention: Results of a Pragmatic Clinical Trial.

Brief cognitive behavioral therapy (BCBT) for suicide prevention has been shown to significantly reduce suicide attempts in multiple clinical settings and populations. Despite its efficacy, some patients will nonetheless engage in suicidal behaviors, typically within months of starting treatment, before they have received all treatment components. Accelerating the pace of BCBT with daily sessions during a compressed timeframe (e.g., 1-3 weeks) could lead to faster reductions in suicide risk. To date, no studies have examined the potential benefits of intensive or "massed" suicide prevention th…

Efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy for stimulant use disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used psychosocial intervention for stimulant use disorder (SUD). However, its independent efficacy is not well established, as previous reviews often combine it with other interventions or compare it to comparators with active components. To clarify its specific contribution, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy of standalone CBT compared to minimal-treatment controls for achieving abstinence in individuals with SUD. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and the Coch…

A Trial of Coach-Supported, Smartphone-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psoriasis With Comorbid Depression.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is associated with increased risk of depression. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment, access remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a smartphone-delivered, coach-led CBT program for depression among individuals with psoriasis. METHODS: This single-arm, 8-week pilot study (Mindset trial, NCT06216691) enrolled adults with psoriasis and at least mild depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥5). Participants engaged in a smartphone-based CBT program guided by bachelor's-level lay coaches…

Impact of cognitive behavioral therapy on attention in patients with fibromyalgia: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: More than three-fourths of people with fibromyalgia complain of cognitive difficulties, including memory and attention problems, which result in impaired job performance and disability. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious in treating people with attention deficits, depression, anxiety, and chronic pain (eg, fibromyalgia). OBJECTIVES: In this study, we examined the efficacy of CBT for improving attention in patients with fibromyalgia. METHODS: Sixty-nine women with fibromyalgia (M = 42; SD = 13) were randomly assigned to receive CBT or an education control, and com…

The effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with motor neuron disease: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Motor neuron disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive loss of motor function. With limited disease-modifying drug therapies, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has emerged as a key nonpharmacological intervention. This systematic review evaluated CBT's therapeutic potential across clinical domains to inform psychosocial care of patients with MND. METHODS: Comprehensive searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase, from inception until February 2025. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data…

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in people with schizophrenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment for insomnia in general population, but only recently has it begun to be examined among people with schizophrenia. We aimed to summarize the currently available evidence by the systematic review and meta-analysis. DESIGN: Multiple databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and PsycINFO were searched up to 1st October 2024 to include all randomized controlled trials examining CBT-I among adults with insomnia and schizophrenia. We evaluated the certainty of evidence using G…

Mediation Effects of Group Cohesion in Group-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Youth Anxiety Disorders.

There is limited research on group cohesion as a potential outcome facilitator in group-based cognitive-behavioral treatment (GCBT) for youth. We examined if group cohesion mediated the relation between the temperamental trait behavioral inhibition and posttreatment outcomes following GCBT for youth with anxiety disorders. The sample comprised 88 youth (M age = 11.2 years) from a randomized controlled effectiveness trial. The outcomes were posttreatment clinical severity and treatment satisfaction. Group cohesion fully mediated the relation between behavioral inhibition and posttreatment sever

The use of coaching in smartphone app-based cognitive behavioral therapy for body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is severe and undertreated. Digital mental health could be key to expanding access to evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy for BDD (CBT-BDD). Coach guidance is posited to be essential for effective uptake of digital interventions. However, little is known about how different patients may use coaching, what patterns correspond to meaningful outcomes, and how to match coaching to patient needs. METHODS: Participants were 77 adults who received a 12-week guided smartphone CBT-BDD. Bachelor's-level coaches were available via as…

Cost-Effectiveness of Computer-Assisted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression Among Adults in Primary Care.

IMPORTANCE: Approximately 1 in 5 adults are diagnosed with depression in their lifetime. However, less than half receive help from a health professional, with the treatment gap being worse for individuals with socioeconomic disadvantage. Computer-assisted cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) is an effective and convenient strategy to treat depression; however, its cost-effectiveness in a sociodemographically diverse population remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of clinician-supported CCBT compared with treatment as usual (TAU) in a primary care population with a sub…

Impact of cognitive behavioral therapy on premature ejaculation patients: A prospective, randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of the most common male sexual dysfunctions, with a prevalence of about 4%-39% in the Chinese population. Studies have shown that a variety of biological factors can lead to premature ejaculation, such as central nervous system disorders, hypersensitivity of the penis head, and psychological factors. Based on clinical experience, psychological counseling and education of patients and partners should be ranked as the first priority when treating PE. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) addresses emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disorders by alteri…

Neural correlates of emotional reactivity predict response to cognitive-behavioral therapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Examining predictive biomarkers to identify individuals who will likely benefit from a specific treatment is important for the development of targeted interventions. The late positive potential (LPP) is a neural marker of attention and elaborated stimulus processing, and increased LPP responses to negative stimuli are characteristic of pathological anxiety. The present study investigated whether LPP reactivity would prospectively predict response to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), the first-line treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: To this end, the LPP i

Early response to cognitive behavioral therapy for body dysmorphic disorder as a predictor of outcomes.

Individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) suffer from distressing or impairing preoccupations with perceived imperfections in their appearance. This often-chronic condition is associated with significant functional impairment and elevated rates of psychiatric comorbidity and morbidity, including depression, substance use disorders, and suicidality. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for BDD has been shown to be efficacious. However, this intervention is long (up to 24 weeks) relative to many manualized approaches for other related conditions, there is a significant shortage of clinicians…

Stepped-Care Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Children on the Autism Spectrum with Co-occurring Anxiety.

This trial examined stepped-care cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) among 96 autistic youth with co-occurring anxiety. Step 1 included an open trial of parent-led, therapist-guided bibliotherapy. Step 2 was family-based CBT for those who did not respond to Step 1 or maintenance for those who did. Eighteen participants (28%) who completed Step 1 responded. Responders reported significantly lower pre-treatment anxiety, internalizing symptoms, and functional impairment than non-responders. After Steps 1 and 2, 80% of completers (55% intent-to-treat) were responders. Anxiety, impairment, and ASD

Overall goal of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in Major Psychiatric Disorders and Suicidality: A Narrative Review.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that is based on the underlying assumption that mental disorders and psychological distress are maintained by cognitive factors, that is, that general beliefs about the world, the self, and the future contribute to the maintenance of emotional distress and behavioral problems. The overall goal of CBT is to replace dysfunctional constructs with more flexible and adaptive cognitions. The most relevant cognitive-behavioral techniques in clinical practice are: i. Cognitive Restructuring (also known as the ABCDE method) is indi
