Dengue and scrub typhus coinfection in pregnancy: A rare case with multiorgan dysfunction.

Tropical infections continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality in India. While mixed tropical infections are relatively common in the general population, they are rare during pregnancy. We report a 24-year-old pregnant woman with a history of previous lower segment caesarean section and preeclampsia, who developed dengue and scrub typhus infection near-term. The illness was complicated by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, yet with timely multidisciplinary management, both maternal and neonatal outcomes were favourable. Literature on such mixed tropical infections in pregnancy rem

Strongyloides stercoralis coinfection impairs immune control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in TB infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: Helminth co-infection are common in tuberculosis (TB) endemic regions and alter host immunity. However, their impact on immune responses in TB infection (TBI) remains incompletely defined. METHODS: We analyzed QuantiFERON (QFT) supernatants and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from TBI+Hel+ (S. stercoralis (Ss) infection) (n=15) and TBI+Hel- (n=23) individuals. Cytokine levels were assessed at baseline and following TB antigenic stimulation (TBAg1 and TBAg2), as well as mitogenic stimulation. PBMCs were stimulated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) H37Rv,

Antiretroviral treatment does not prevent extrapulmonary tuberculosis during SIV/Mtb coinfection in macaques.

Coinfection with both HIV and M. tuberculosis (Mtb) results in disseminated tuberculosis (TB) and accelerated HIV progression. Despite greater access to antiretroviral treatment (ART), it remains unclear whether suppression of HIV replication protects against severe Mtb infection. Here, using a macaque model of SIV/Mtb coinfection, we investigated whether treatment of SIV infection with ART influenced control of a subsequent Mtb challenge compared with SIV-infected macaques that were not treated with ART. Macaques were first infected with SIVB670, SIVB670 with ART, or saline followed by a low-…

HBV Dominance Is Associated With a Distinct Inflammatory Milieu in HBV/HCV Coinfection.

Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) virus coinfection is linked to a higher risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared to monoinfection. Despite this, data are limited, and further investigation is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms. While patients are classified based on dominance patterns, the impact on the immune system remains largely unknown. It is recognised that HBV reactivation may occur following HCV clearance. This study aims to explore the potential immune interactivity between HCV and HBV by analysing patterns of soluble immune mediators (SIM). A total of 5…

Viral interference during coinfection and sequential infection of enterovirus A71 and coxsackievirus A16.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection caused by enteroviruses including enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16). These viruses often co-circulate, resulting in potential viral interference which could impact virus transmission, virulence, and EV-A71 vaccine effectiveness. Experimental evidence to support these findings is lacking. Epidemiology and seroprevalence data for EV-A71 and CVA16 reveal trends suggestive of viral interference between the two viruses. Coinfection with both EV-A71 and CVA16, or sequential infection of EV-A71 followed by CVA16…

Coinfection with Respiratory Pathogens and Dengue Disease Severity in Puerto Rico, 2012-2024.

Differentiating between acute febrile illnesses (AFIs) caused by arboviruses like dengue virus (DENV) and other pathogens is challenging, particularly in the case of coinfections, which often require comprehensive diagnostic testing for accurate identification. Recognizing DENV coinfections is important because they may contribute to increased disease severity, and their identification can aid in patient management decisions. Using data from the Sentinel Enhanced Dengue Surveillance System in Puerto Rico (2012-2024), we compared patients with DENV monoinfection to those coinfected with DENV an…

Modeling gonorrhea and HIV coinfection with predictive analytics for disability and mortality risks.

In this article, a model is developed to depict the dynamics of gonorrhea and human immunodeficiency virus coinfection with disability and mortality risks. Estimating the parameter values and validating the model are done using real-world data on cases of gonorrhea. The properties of solutions, such as boundedness and positivity, uniqueness and existence are investigated. The basic reproduction number is calculated using the next-generation matrix. The stability of Gonorrhea-Free and Present Equilibrium states is also analyzed. The Lyapunov function is used to verify global stability at the Go…

Microsporidian coinfection reduces fitness of a fungal pathogen due to rapid host mortality.

Infection outcomes can be strongly context dependent, shifting a host-symbiont relationship along a parasitism-mutualism continuum. Numerous … nto the host body cavity, it does not improve the survival or reproduction of the host; conversely, coinfection increased the mortality of Daphnia. This shorter lifespan of coinfected hosts disrupted the life cycle of M. bicuspidata, greatly reducing its fitness. Thus, coinfection with both pathogens was detrimental to the host at the individual level but mig …

Leishmaniasis and Tularemia Coinfection: A Case Report of Neglected Causes of Cervical Lymphadenopathy.

Leishmania and tularemia are infectious diseases that both can present with lymphadenopathy. Leishmania typically causes visceral or cutaneous forms, while tularemia can result in glandular tularemia characterized by lymphadenitis. We report a case of a patient presenting with localized cervical lymphadenopathy diagnosed with both leishmaniasis and tularemia. This case underscores the importance of considering both pathogenic agents in the differential diagnosis of localized lymphadenitis. Early treatment is crucial to prevent the dissemination of these infections.

Hepatitis B virus and cytomegalovirus coinfection in an older patient: a case report.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection involving the skin is relatively rare. We herein report a case involving a man in his late 70s with positive hepatitis B surface antigen who presented with multiform skin lesions, including a papuloid rash, papular urticaria, and purpura. The patient had taken no antiviral drugs for nearly 13 years but had recently developed severe liver injury. Laboratory examination revealed positive CMV immunoglobulin M, CMV polymerase chain reaction result of 1.09 × 102 copies/mL, and a slightly decreased CD4+ cell count; however, the CD8+ T-cell count was within the normal

The evolution of envelope function during coinfection with phylogenetically distinct human immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: Coinfection with two phylogenetically distinct Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) variants might provide an opportunity for rapid viral expansion and the emergence of fit variants that drive disease progression. However, autologous neutralising immune responses are known to drive Envelope (Env) diversity which can either enhance replicative capacity, have no effect, or reduce viral fitness. This study investigated whether in vivo outgrowth of coinfecting variants was linked to pseudovirus and infectious molecular clones' infectivity to determine whether diversification resulted…

Suppurative Thyroiditis: Coinfection by Nocardia spp. and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Suppurative thyroiditis is a rare entity with a low incidence in thyroid diseases, manifesting with pain, fever, dysphagia, and dysphonia. Its infrequency is explained by the thyroid gland's resistance to infections due to its encapsulated position, high blood flow, bactericidal action of iodine, and extensive lymphatic network. We present the first report in the literature of a 72-year-old woman with a history of inflammatory myopathy and immunosuppression diagnosed with suppurative thyroiditis co-infected with Nocardia spp. and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This entity requires a high clinical

Coinfection of Toxoplasma gondii and Other Microorganisms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, which has infected a third of the global population. Immunocompromised individuals and children with congenital disorders are most likely to be impacted by toxoplasmosis, and accurate diagnosis is essential. Toxoplasmosis is associated with HIV, schizophrenia, and diabetes. However, few studies have analyzed the association with other microorganisms. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of coinfection of Toxoplasma gondii with other pathogens. From November 1997 to June 2024, PubMed, Scienc…

A. castellanii and P. aeruginosa mutually exacerbate damage to corneal cells during coinfection.

At the National Cheng Kung University Hospital, numerous cases of amoebic keratitis had been identified with concurrent bacterial infections. Among these bacterial coinfections, Pseudomonas aeruginosa accounted for 50% of the reported cases. However, the impact of pathogenic bacteria on amoeba-induced corneal damage remains unclear. In our study, we successfully demonstrated that P. aeruginosa accumulated on the Acanthamoeba castellanii surface and caused more severe corneal damage. We also indicated that the exposure of P. aeruginosa to amoeba-soluble antigens enhanced its adhesion ability, p…
