Co-twin control study of the relationship between smoking and some periodontal disease factors.

The study was based on 164 twin pairs from the older cohort of the Swedish twin registry. The main purpose of the study was to analyze previously recorded data concerning gingival bleeding in members of twin pairs with differing smoking exposure. Other periodontal disease factors analyzed were plaque index, alveolar bone index and tooth loss. It was found that the degree of alveolar bone loss and the number of teeth lost were greater in twins with a high life-time smoking exposure than in their twin partners with a low life-time exposure. Contrary to expectation, it was found that gingival ble

Prevalence of root caries in the adult Finnish population.

A sample of 8000 persons was drawn to represent the Finnish population aged 30 years and over. The participation rate was 89.9%. Root caries was recorded when the lesion was obviously soft and more than half of it was located on cementum. Lesions adjacent to fillings were not included. The reproducibility and the standard of the clinical recordings were tested by reexamining 20% of the studied population 2-6 months after the first clinical examination. The overall prevalence of root caries was 21.6% for men and 14.5% for women. The prevalence increased for both sexes almost consistently with a

Timing of permanent tooth emergence in a Southeastern Dominican schoolchildren population sample.

The purpose of this study was to establish the mean timing of permanent tooth emergence in a low to middle socioeconomic level schoolchildren population sample from the Southeastern part of the Dominican Republic. A total of 900 children (15.6% of the 5-14-year-old schoolchildren from this city) were studied. Girls were relatively advanced in their emergence times except for the canine and second premolar in the maxilla and the first premolar in the mandible. The mean emergence times were, in general, relatively advanced when compared with those of United States whites and blacks, Danish, Cana

Oral health of children in southern Sudan.

426 4- 17-year-old children (89% males) from the Jonglei Province and 50 12- and 15-year-old children from Juba town in Southern Sudan were examined according to WHO criteria (9). The prevalence of calculus and intense gingivitis was high, and highest at ages 8 and 9 years. 8% of 25-year-old children had advanced periodontal disease but this was confined to the anterior mandibular region. Caries prevalence was very low, but much higher in Juba town (36% at both age 12 and age 15 years) than in the Jonglei Province children (4% at 12 years and 8% at 15 years of age). The pastoral, isolated exis

Cross-sectional study of orthodontic treatment and missing of permanent teeth in two birth cohorts of Finnish students according to sex.

Undergraduate students (n = 451) at a Finnish university were studied. For analysis, the subjects were divided into two birth cohorts: those born before 1955, and those born in that year or later. Information about previous orthodontic appliance therapy was obtained from the students by using a structured questionnaire. Missing permanent teeth (second and third molars excluded) were recorded at a dental examination. Every 10th student had received orthodontic treatment; the proportion of orthodontically treated subjects was higher for females (14%) than for males (5%). Seven percent of student

Analysis of background variables in 350 patients with TMJ disorders as reported in self administered questionnaire.

All 350 patients referred to the Department of Stomatognathic Physiology during a 4-month period were given a self-administered questionnaire intended to give a review of the patients' history. The questions concerning general somatic and psychic health, education and social conditions are dealt with in this article. Twenty-five percent of the patients, more women than men, considered their general state of health to be impaired or poor. Seventy-two percent of the patients denied having had nervous or psychic disorders while 9% were currently being treated for such symptoms. Patients who had a

Relationship of oral hygiene and sugar consumption to risk of caries in children.

The associations of dental caries with poor oral hygiene and high sugar consumption were analyzed taking into account possible confounding and factor interaction. The series consisted of 543 children from low-fluoride areas (0.10-0.46 parts/10(6)), aged 5, 9 and 13 years. Plaque accumulation and sugar consumption were slightly confounded throughout the observations. Effect-modification appeared to exist, since the effect of one factor was greater at higher levels of the other. The association between the amount of plaque and dental caries was statistically significant at all levels of sugar co

Caries susceptibility of permanent first and second molars in children aged 5-15 years.

Clinical examinations of 276 5-year-old children were carried out twice yearly for 2 1/2 years, and a further 1104 11--12-year-old children were examined annually for 3 years. Fifty per cent of permanent first molar teeth had erupted by 6.4 years; the mean age of eruption for permanent second molar teeth was 12.2 years. One year after these mean eruption dates over 10% of first molars and 45% of second permanent molars were already carious. Although development of caries was initially slower in permanent first molars, between the ages of 7.5 and 8.5 years the caries increment rose to 18.8%. By

Oral conditions in Australian children of Aboriginal and Caucasian descent.

Oral health parameters were examined for 211 schoolchildren (128 Aborigines and 83 Caucasians) representative of the 6--8 and 10--11 year age groups in the Brewarrina and Walgett areas of western New South Wales (fluoride in water less than or equal to 0.02-0.26 parts/10(6)). Despite similar dietary carbohydrate challenge and tooth eruption patterns, Aboriginal children, most of whom were members of a transitional community within a low socioeconomic stratum, had higher prevalence of caries (DIMFT) and severity rating of carious lesions (SR), poorer oral hygiene (OHI) and more gingivitis (PI)

Panoramic radiographic examination of 704 Danish children aged 9--10 years.

Panoramic radiographs of 704 apparently health children aged 9--10 years were examined regarding anomalies and pathologic conditions in the maxillofacial area. Almost all findings were mesial to the molars. 1.7% of the children had a supernumerary tooth, 7.7% had hypodontia. Malposition of 631 permanent teeth was recorded. 42 dentigerous cysts were detected. Malformed crown or root was seen on 60 permanent teeth. Caries was found on 224 primary and 32 permanent teeth. 257 primary teeth showed atypical resorption, and 53 had a periapical inflammatory radiolucency. 20 retained roots of primary t

Oral health status and treatment needs in long-term medicine patients in a Copenhagen hospital department.

Oral health and dental treatment needs were investigated in 50 randomly selected long-term medicine patients admitted to The Glostrup Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Glostrup, Denmark. All the patients were clinically and radiologically examined. Oral health generally was poor. Two-thirds (66%) of the patients were totally edentulous, 24% partially edentulous. Only 10% were dentate with no dentures. The number of remaining teeth per patient averaged 4.7, that of caries destructed teeth 1.4. All 17 patients with remaining teeth had periodontal disease, and 13 of them suffered from caries. A

Radiographic survey of periodontal disease in 264 adolescent schoolboys in Lagos, Nigeria.

Periapical radiographs were taken of central incisor and first molar teeth in 264 Nigerian boys (12-20 years) from a school in Lagos. From the radiographs, bone loss involving central incisors and first molars was measured. Bone loss was evident in 28.4% of subjects examined. The prevalence of bone loss rose through the age groups from 23.2% at 12-13 years to 34.6% at 18-20 years. Over all ages the prevalence of bone loss involving mandibular central incisors was 14.4%, mandibular first molars 9.8%, maxillary first molars 8.3% and maxillary central incisors 7.6%. Two subjects showed features c

Effectiveness of combined preventive methods on erupting teeth in children in a fluoridated community.

Several preventive methods were used in combination to reduce dental caries in children residing in a fluoridated area. The method included dental health education, prophylaxis, pit and fissure sealants, topical fluoride and restorative care. Prophylaxis, sealant and fluoride procedures were repeated every 6 months. Sealant was applied to all fully erupted caries free posterior teeth in the mouth. This report compares results obtained for teeth that erupted after the study began with those teeth that were already present at the time treatment procedures were applied. Percent reductions in cari

Efficiency of traditional chewing sticks in oral hygiene programs among Ethiopian schoolchildren.

The effect of oral hygiene programs was studied in 248 children from five schoolclasses in Asella, Ethiopia. All children received professional toothcleaning after an initial clinical examination, and were again examined after a trial period of 3 months. The classes were assigned to the following procedures: one class received information and instruction in the use of the toothbrush, and a second class in the use of the mefaka, a wooden chewing stick traditionally used for oral cleaning. The children were advised to clean their teeth daily. Two other classes received similar information and in

Age-standardized incidence rates of ameloblastoma and dentigerous cyst on the Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Although a great deal is known about the incidence of cancer, including oral cancer, no such study has been done on odontogenic tumors and jaw cysts. There are therefore no standardized data which would allow for comparative incidences in different countries and between different groups. In the present study, cases of ameloblastomas and dentigerous cysts derived from the records of all the hospital pathology departments and private pathology practices on the Witwatersrand, were recorded for the 10-year period 1965--1974. The population at risk (1970 census) was 974,390 Whites and 1,567,280 Bla

Epidemiology of dental caries in the premolar and second molar teeth of Scottish children in relation to pits and fissures.

To evaluate the potential benefits from elimination of dental caries in the fissures of teeth, surface patterns of decay were calculated for all surfaces of the premolar and second molar teeth of 98 children followed longitudinally for 5 years, between ages 11 and 15 years. Tooth eruption and susceptibility were also examined in relation to the administration of sealant programs. The children who were part of the control group of a fluoride dentifrice study on the Scottish Isle of Lewis, had low exposure to fluorides, high caries attack and very low restorative treatment levels; so true surfac

Oral hygiene and gingival health in Danish dental students and faculty.

This survey attempted to determine the status of oral cleanliness and gingival health in 150 dental students and 101 faculty members in a dental school. Without advance notice, plaque deposits were scored, using the Plaque Index System, and gingival health was determined using the criteria of the Gingival Index System. The 1st-year students had the poorest hygiene and gingival health. An improvement (P less than 0.01) was noted in the 2nd-year students who were still not in clinical training but had completed a course in preventive dentistry including oral hygiene techniques. Further improveme
