Continence promotion in health education and community outreach programmes.

Incontinence is a highly stigmatised condition that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, yet few people seek proper assessment and treatment. Therefore, outreach events aimed at specific or general patient groups can play a crucial role in creating awareness of the condition. This article discusses some of the principles behind health promotion and outreach activities, and the importance of health literacy. It suggests some questions to consider when planning outreach activities and ideas of possible events. Two case studies from the authors' community service have been in

The Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy: implementation of a population-based osteoporosis action plan in Canada.

In the last decade, there have been a number of action plans published to highlight the importance of preventing osteoporosis and related fractures. In the province of Ontario Canada, the Ministry of Health provided funding for the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy. The goal is to reduce morbidity, mortality, and costs from osteoporosis and related fractures through an integrated and comprehensive approach aimed at health promotion and disease management. This paper describes the components of the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy and progress on implementation efforts as of March 2009. There are five

Understanding community psychosocial needs after disasters: implications for mental health services.

The psychosocial impact of disasters has attracted increasing attention. There is little consensus, however, about what priorities should be pursued in relation to mental health interventions, with most controversy surrounding the relevance of traumatic stress to mental health. The present overview suggests that acute traumatic stress may be a normative response to life threat which tends to subside once conditions of safety are established. At the same time, there is a residual minority of survivors who will continue to experience chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their needs c

Programmatic factors associated with the limited impact of Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin to control Onchocerciasis in three drainage basins of South West Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: The CDTI model is known to have enhanced community participation in planning and resource mobilization toward the control of onchocerciasis. These effects were expected to translate into better individual acceptance of the intervention and hence high Treatment Coverage, leading to a sustainable community-led strategy and reduction in the disease burden. A survey revealed that after 10-12 rounds of treatment, prevalence of onchocerciasis was still high in three drainage basins of South West Cameroon and transmission was going on. METHODS: We designed a three (3)-year retrospectiv

Responding to a Mumps Outbreak Impacting Immigrants and Low-English-Proficiency Populations.

OBJECTIVES: To examine outbreak response-associated costs, lessons learned, and challenges encountered during a local health department's response to a mumps outbreak. DESIGN: We conducted semistructured interviews with individuals directly involved in the response to a mumps outbreak and analyzed outbreak response-associated cost data. An innovative approach in monitoring oral cholera vaccination campaign: integration of a between-round survey.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is essential in ensuring population's access to immunization. Surveys are part of this M&E approach but its timing limits the use of its results to improve the coverage of the evaluated campaign. An oral cholera vaccination campaign was organized in a health district of the Far North region of Cameroon and involved an innovative M&E approach. The aim of this project was to assess the feasibility and effect of using recommendations of a community-based immunization and communication coverage survey conducted after the first round of an OCV campaign on

South Asian Health. From Research to Practice and Policy: An Overview.

The US South Asian population has grown tremendously, and is now over 2.5 million. South Asians often face tremendous cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic and structural obstacles to good health, and face staggering cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer risk. Coupled with this is a paucity of detailed data on the population's unique CVD and cancer risk profiles, etiologic mechanisms, and effective interventions to address South Asian health disparities. This data gap compelled an initiative to develop more targeted research and evidence-based practice and policy approaches. The South Asian He

Conditions in rural Nepal for which depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate initiation is not recommended: implications for community-based service delivery.

The presence of medical conditions that might affect the use of depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) as a contraceptive method was assessed in a rural district in Nepal. A general health survey was conducted in nonpregnant and noncontracepting women aged 15-44 years to determine the presence of any health problems. The survey included a general assessment interview by nonphysicians, followed by formal medical histories and physical exams by female gynecologists. Possible pregnancy (nine cases) and abnormal uterine bleeding (one case) were the only conditions identified in which DMPA should

'New bottle, but old wine': from family planning to HIV/AIDS in post-Doi Moi Vietnam.

This paper begins with an observation that during the past two decades HIV/AIDS has emerged as a new public health priority in Vietnam and has commanded increasing attention and resources from both the government and the donor community. By juxtaposing HIV/AIDS with family planning, another social and health priority that preceded, and overlapped with, HIV/AIDS for a large part of the 1990s, we show two major gaps that have undermined both programmes. One is the lack of a strong civil society, that could have served as advocates for change, especially outside the government and the donor commu

[Strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by acute diarrhea in Latin America].

Following the World Health Organization guidelines, the Latin American Diarrheal Disease Control Programs have directed its efforts towards the promotion of Oral Hydration Therapy (OHT) and appropriate dietary management during the diarrheal episode and convalescent period, aimed at diminishing the mortality secondary to diarrhea. In developing countries, OHT is preventing, annually, one million of childhood deaths due to dehydration. Yet, only one fourth of the total population of children suffering diarrhea are being treated with this therapy. Among the strategies to decrease diarrhea morbid
