Communicating with Community: Using Geographic Information Systems to Convey the Impacts of Extreme Heat in Los Angeles Environmental Justice Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related event in the United States, but it is not regarded with the same urgency as other natural disasters. By 2050, Los Angeles is expected to experience about three times as many extreme heat days compared to today, which will likely disproportionately affect environmental justice communities. One barrier to mitigating heat-related vulnerability in frontline communities is a lack of awareness of available resources and adaptation strategies. METHODS: The Prioritizing Local Action for Climate Equity (PLACE) study aims to bridge this knowle

A Coordinated U.S. Biobank Alliance for the Zoological and Conservation Community.

With dramatic advancements in biological data generation, genetic rescue and reproductive technologies, and inter-institutional coordination of care across entire animal populations, zoos, aquariums, and their collaborators are uniquely positioned to lead population-wide research benefiting animal wellbeing and species survival. However, procedural and inter-institutional barriers make it exceedingly difficult to access existing zoological biospecimens and data at scale. To address this, the Zoonomics Working Group, representing diverse roles across three zoological associations (AZA, EAZA, WA

Economic approaches to improving access to evidence-based and recovery-oriented services for people with severe mental illness.

During the past 3 decades, research has identified several psychosocial evidence-based practices (EBPs) for people with severe mental illness (SMI). Starting from a different origin, the recovery movement has influenced perceptions of how EBPs and other services should be delivered, and also emphasized the value of peer supports. We now know much more than 30 years ago about the kinds of services that help people with SMI live satisfying lives in the community. Evidence-based and recovery-oriented services require additional resources but use them sparingly: they are highly individualized, oft

Child and neighborhood factors associated with pediatric injuries sustained while engaged in activities where helmet usage is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBI) during activities where helmet usage is recommended (AWHUR), are a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality in the U.S. While advocacy and education are proven measures to address safety, community resources in a child's neighborhood are known to have a large impact on their health. METHODS: We utilized the trauma registry at two pediatric trauma centers, in a major metropolitan area from 2018 to 2022, to perform a retrospective chart review and Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping on all AWHUR inj…

Nutritional needs, resources, and barriers among unhoused adults cared for by a street medicine organization in Chicago, Illinois: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Those experiencing houselessness rely on obtaining food from community organizers and donations. Simultaneously, the houseless face disproportionally high rates of medical conditions that may be affected by diet including diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. There is limited literature on the resources and barriers of the houseless community regarding optimal nutrition from an actionable perspective. Further, less data is available on how street medicine organizations may best impact the nutrition of the unhoused they serve. Elucidating this information will inform how organ

Access to Interpretable Data to Support Disproportionate Health Risks from Industrial Releases: A Case Study on the Environmental Protection Agency's Datasets and Their Application to the Latinx Communities of Houston, Texas.

Latinx communities face disproportionate environmental injustices and are targeted due to systematic economic and political inequities. This research evaluates the ease at which links between industrial releases and risk of adverse health effects can be defined to influence policy change in Houston, TX. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) is the most comprehensive public database on industrial facilities' toxic chemical releases in the US. TRI is presented within a risk-based context through the Risk Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI) scores. TRI an

Queering Shelter: Homelessness Service Provider Perspectives on Programming for 2SLGBTQ+ Adults in Montreal, Canada.

2SLGBTQ+ adults face unique experiences of homelessness often marked by heightened victimization. Notably, homelessness resources represent challenging environments where, in addition to risks of discrimination, 2SLGBTQ+ adults often do not have support that reflects their unique needs to exit homelessness. The case of Montreal, Canada, is particularly concerning as no resource specifically supports this group. This research set out with the following questions: 1. How are homelessness organizations in Montreal currently responding to the needs of 2SLGBTQ+ community members? 2. How do workers

'Don't lose it on the bus!': Casting the normative biosexual citizen in early Scottish pre-exposure prophylaxis provision.

The introduction of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) raises important questions around how new biotechnologies are negotiated within contemporary settings and how they can shape the moral governance of biocitizens, or as we explore, biosexual citizens. This article draws on qualitative interviews and focus groups to consider how the normative biosexual citizen was cast at the start of provision in Scotland by clinical and community practitioners. Our findings show how practitioners navigated ideas around who was deserving of support and access to PrEP in the context of limited resources, in

Time to expand the circle of care - General practitioners' experiences of managing concussion in the community.

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) implemented a concussion management pathway (CMP), aimed at improving management at community level. General Practitioners (GPs) played a large role in the design of this process. The objective of this study was to explore GPs' perceptions of barriers and facilitators of the CMP and rugby-related concussion management in the community. A descriptive qualitative approach using interviews and focus groups was employed. Four themes were derived: i) GPs' existing knowledge and confidence around concussion management; ii) Operational resources: time, remuneration and pathway

Depression in Latina mothers: Examining the roles of acculturation, enculturation, social support, and family resources.

OBJECTIVES: Previous findings on the relationship between acculturation and depression have been mixed, such that acculturation has been demonstrated as a protective factor, risk factor, and neutral factor for depressive symptomology. The current study sought to clarify this association by examining the roles of acculturation and enculturation (retention of traditional values and practices) on depression while incorporating contextual variables such as social support and resource adequacy. METHOD: This study utilized archived data from 308 Latina mothers who participated in a randomized clini
