Development of a Self-management and Peer-Mentoring Intervention to Improve Transition Readiness Among Young Adult Survivors of Pediatric Cancer: Formative Qualitative Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors require lifelong risk-based follow-up care. It should be noted that less than one-third of adult survivors of childhood cancer report any survivor-focused care, and fewer than 1 in 5 obtain risk-based follow-up care. It is thought that this may be due to inadequate transition readiness, including low levels of knowledge, skills, motivation, and resources to make the transition to independent self-management of follow-up care. Interventions that focus specifically on improving the transition from parent-managed to self-managed care are needed. Theory and p

Effects of a culturally tailored intervention on medication adherence in Chinese and Vietnamese Americans with hepatitis B: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Asian Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic hepatitis B (CHB), which is caused by infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). While adherence to antiviral medication is an effective practical approach to managing CHB and preventing liver cancer, medication adherence rates among Chinese and Vietnamese Americans with CHB, two vulnerable yet understudied populations, remain largely unknown. METHODS: We designed and implemented a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the potential improvement of long-term adherence to HBV medication in Asian American populat

Cultural, Societal, and Behavioral Contributors to Delays in Seeking Care for Postmenopausal Bleeding Among Disaggregated Populations of Black Women.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer outcomes differ among Black women when examined by nativity, and timely evaluation of postmenopausal bleeding (PMB), the most common presenting symptom, may contribute to these disparities. METHODS: This qualitative study explored cultural, societal, and behavioral factors shaping PMB appraisal and anticipated care-seeking among US-born Black, Caribbean-born Black, and Haitian Creole-speaking women in South Florida, guided by the Safer-Andersen Model of Total Patient Delay. Ten focus groups were conducted with 55 Black women aged ≥50 years recruited through purp

Assessing the variation and drivers of cost in 1-level lumbar fusion: a time-driven activity-based costing analysis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: As value-based health care arrangements gain traction in spine care, understanding the true cost of care becomes critical. Historically, inaccurate cost proxies have been used, including negotiated reimbursement rates or list prices. However, time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) allows for a more accurate cost assessment, including a better understanding of the primary drivers of cost in 1-level lumbar fusion. PURPOSE: To determine the variation of total hospital cost, differences in characteristics between high-cost and nonhigh-cost patients, and to identify the pri

Social and Behavioral Factors Associated With Diabetes in Southern California vs the US.

IMPORTANCE: Diabetes disproportionately impacts communities across the US and in Southern California, where there is a large Hispanic population. Diabetes prevalence continues to increase, and more studies are needed to understand behaviors and socioecological factors contributing to diabetes risk regionally and nationally. OBJECTIVE: To identify social and behavioral correlates (SBC) of diabetes in Southern California and to contrast these findings with national data to help ensure that public health strategies are appropriately targeted and regionally responsive. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTI

Successful Genetic Screening and Creating Awareness of Familial Hypercholesterolemia and Other Heritable Dyslipidemias in the Netherlands.

The genetic screening program for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in the Netherlands, which was embraced by the Dutch Ministry of Health from 1994 to 2014, has led to twenty years of identification of at least 1500 FH cases per year. Although funding by the government was terminated in 2014, the approach had proven its effectiveness and had built the foundation for the development of more sophisticated diagnostic tools, clinical collaborations, and new molecular-based treatments for FH patients. As such, the community was driven to continue the program, insurance companies were convinced to

MRSA colonization and infection among persons with occupational livestock exposure in Europe: Prevalence, preventive options and evidence.

Colonization with livestock-associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcusaureus (LA-MRSA) among persons occupationally exposed to pigs, cattle or poultry is very frequent. In Europe, LA-MRSA mostly belong to the clonal lineage CC398. Since colonized persons have an increased risk of developing MRSA infections, defining the burden of work-related infection caused by LA-MRSA CC398 is of interest to exposed personnel, insurance companies and infection control staff. This review summarizes data on the types of occupation-related infections caused by LA-MRSA CC398, the incidence of such infection

Psychological distress among unaccompanied migrants and persons prone to statelessness in Ghana: prevalence and associated factors from a community-based cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological distress is a major mental health concern among migrants. Yet evidence concerning unaccompanied migrants and persons prone to statelessness remains limited, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This gap constrains efforts to advance their mental well-being and social inclusion in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3.4 and 10.2. This study therefore examined the prevalence of psychological distress and associated factors among these populations in Ghana. METHODS: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 481 participants who met predefined eligi
