Cost-effectiveness of nitrogen mitigation by alternative household wastewater management technologies.

Household wastewater, especially from conventional septic systems, is a major contributor to nitrogen pollution. Alternative household waste … ve caused heightened eutrophication in local receiving water bodies. We find that flushing and dry (composting) urine-diversion toilets paired with conventional septic systems for greywater management demonstrate the lowest life cycle cost and highest cost-effectiveness (dollars per kilogram of nitrogen removed from the watershed). Composting toilets are als …

Bacterial dispersal enhances the elimination of active fecal coliforms during vermicomposting of fruit and vegetable wastes: The overlooked role of earthworm mucus.

Earthworms play a pivotal role in the elimination of fecal coliforms during vermicomposting of fruit and vegetable waste (FVWs). However, the specific mechanisms underlying the action of earthworm mucus remain unclear. This study investigated the mechanisms of fecal coliform reduction related to earthworm mucus during FVWs vermicomposting by comparing treatments with and without earthworms. The results show that the secretion of earthworm mucus decreased by 13.93 % during the startup phase, but significantly (P < 0.001) increased by 57.80 % during the degradation phase. Compared to the control…

Prevalence of lameness and leg lesions of lactating dairy cows housed in southern Brazil: Effects of housing systems.

Within the last few decades, the North American and European dairy industries have been collecting information about lameness and leg injury prevalence on dairy farms and have tried to develop solutions to mitigate these ailments. Few published articles report the prevalence of lameness and leg lesions in areas outside of those 2 regions, or how alternative housing systems, such as compost-bedded packs, affect the prevalence of these maladies. The objectives of this study were to compare the prevalence of lameness and leg lesions on confined dairies that used freestall, compost-bedded packs, o

Recycling of neomycin fermentation residue using SEA-CBS technology: Growth performance and antibiotic resistance genes.

Antibiotic fermentation residue (AFR) is a form of bioavailable matter, that represents a typical category of hazardous waste associated with drug production in China. The disposal of these residues seriously restricts the sustainable development of the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the steam explosion and aerobic composting (SEA-CBS) system was developed to thoroughly convert neomycin fermentation residue to organic fertilizer. The results implied that the ultimate removal rate of antibiotics was as high as 99.9% in all cases, including macrolide (kitasamycin and spiramycin), lincos…

[Isolation, identification and heavy metals biosorption of a lead and cadmium-tolerant strain].

Adding biological passivation agent during composting is one of the most effective ways to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals in contaminated livestock manure. To further improve biological passivation, we obtained a strain with high-heavy metal compounds tolerance to passivate heavy-metal contaminated manure and to characterize heavy-metal biosorption. High-tolerance microorganisms for lead and cadmium were isolated and screened from swine manure composting samples. The strain was identified by its morphology and molecular biology. After the influence of different pH, temperature and salt co…

Hybrid treatment of landfill leachate using rotating biological contactors and membrane filtration.

A novel hybrid process combining a 3-stage rotating biological contactor (3-RBC) with a chitosan-PEG-coated polypropylene microfiltration (MF) module was developed and validated for treating leachate generated from a municipal solid waste composting facility in Behshahr (Mazandaran Province, Iran) with a BOD₅/COD ratio of 0.53. At the optimal hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 days, the standalone three-stage RBC achieved 71.8 ± 3.6% COD and 70.4 ± 1.7% ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) removal. Integration of the MF module significantly enhanced overall performance, yielding 74.6 ± 3.1% COD removal, …

Mitigating cadmium contamination in soil using Biochar, sulfur-modified Biochar, and other organic amendments.

Biochar is a novel approach to remediating heavy metal-contaminated soil. Using various organic amendments like phyllosilicate-minerals (PSM), compost, biochar (BC) and sulfur-modified biochar (SMB), demonstrates superior adsorption capacity and stability compared to unmodified biochar (BC). The adsorption mechanisms of SMB are identified for its potential to increase soil-pH and reduce available cadmium (Cd). The study reveals the potential of BC and SMB in immobilizing Cd in contaminated soil. SMB demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity for Cd, followed by BC, PSM, and compost, with cap

Multiresidue method for the determination of critically and highly important classes of antibiotics and their metabolites in agricultural soils and sewage sludge.

In this paper, a method is proposed for the determination of antibiotics classified by the World Health Organization as critically important (four macrolides and three quinolones) and highly important (one tetracycline, one diaminopyridine, and three sulfonamides) and eight of their metabolites. The method is based on ultrasound-assisted extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction clean-up, and analytical determination by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Variables affecting each stage of the analytical method were thoroughly optimised. The method was validated for its applicat

Legionella longbeachae pneumonia: Case report and review of reported cases in non-endemic countries.

Legionella longbeachae pneumonia is much less common than Legionella pneumophila pneumonia in most of the world and may evade timely diagnosis in settings that rely primarily on urine antigen testing, which detects Legionella pnuemophila serogroup 1 only. It is, however, widely recognized in Australia and New Zealand, where it is endemic and associated with exposure to compost and potting soils, rather than contaminated water systems as seen with L. pneumophila. L. longbeachae can cause a similar spectrum and severity of illness as L. pneumophila. Here we present a case of a 47-year-old man wi

Improved medium for recovery and enumeration of the farmer's lung organism, Saccharomonospora viridis.

A new medium, which we propose to call R8, was developed for the isolation and enumeration of the thermophilic actinomycete, Saccharomonospora viridis. This organism has been implicated in a range of hypersensitivity pneumonitides, including farmer's lung, but is generally isolated in small numbers from contaminated environments. Recovery of S. viridis from moldy hay and mushroom compost on R8 medium was compared with recovery on conventional media. S. viridis was isolated from both substrates but in highest numbers and most consistently on the R8 medium. The selectivity of this medium was bes

Application of construction waste residue-based compositing fillers in bioretention facility: Intensified nitrogen removal and mitigated by-product effects.

Bioretention facilities (BRF) are widely utilized in sponge cities for stormwater management, but they face challenges in effectively controlling nitrogen due to the instability of traditional fillers. Pyrite has been extensively employed as an electron donor to enhance nitrogen removal; however, it generates by-products such as H+, SO42-, and Fe2+/Fe3+ that can pose environmental issues. Construction waste residues (CWR), consisting of waste brick and concrete, have been explored as alternative fillers, but they suffer from alkaline leaching problems. To mitigate this limitation, this study i

A new framework for simulating C decomposition and emissions from land applied biosolids and manures using the denitrification and decomposition model.

There is a need for modeling tools capable of estimating CO2 emissions from land application of biosolids and manure. The Denitrification and Decomposition model (DNDC) was improved for this capacity by adding a separate manure C pool to disaggregate manure decomposition from the soil organic matter pools. The effect of soil temperature on soil organic matter decomposition was also improved. Data collected from two climatically distinct sites in Montreal (Quebec) and Truro (Nova Scotia) with corn were used to test DNDC for simulating yield, soil temperature and moisture, and CO2 fluxes from so

The effective application rates and efficiency of organic stimulation for optimal landfarming of heavily petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted soils.

This study compared the effectiveness and efficiency of solid and liquid forms of chicken manures in the biostimulation process to remove petroleum hydrocarbons from heavily oil-contaminated soils. Soil samples were spiked with petroleum hydrocarbon products mixture (PHPM), comprising of diesel, benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene, and naphthalene. The oil-contaminated soils were amended with varying proportions (0%, 10%, and 20% by weight relative to 1 kg of soil) of composted chicken manure (CCM) and liquid chicken manure (LCM). These treated petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted mineral soils

Effectiveness of humic substances extracted from municipal sludge in remediating arsenic-contaminated soil.

The humic substances (HS) extracted from sludge provide a promising, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional leaching agents for the remediation of arsenic (As) contaminated soil. Therefore, this paper investigates the remediation of As-contaminated soil using HS extracted from composted sludge. The HS solution extracted using NaOH solution is SHS, and the HS solution extracted applying sodium hydroxide sodium pyrophosphate is MHS. The effectiveness of these HS agents was compared with that of other fulvic acids, considering factors such as HS concentration, pH,

Separately tracking the sources of hydrophobic and hydrophilic dissolved organic matter during a storm event in an agricultural watershed.

The hydrophobicity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) affects various aspects of its environmental impacts in terms of water quality, sorption behaviors, interactions with other pollutants, and water treatment efficiency. In this study, source tracking of river DOM was conducted separately for hydrophobic acid (HoA-DOM) and hydrophilic (Hi-DOM) fractions using end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) in an agricultural watershed during a storm event. EMMA with optical indices of bulk DOM revealed larger contributions of soil (24 %), compost (28 %), and wastewater effluent (23 %) to riverine DOM under

Does Organomineral Fertilizer Combined with Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria in Sugarcane Modulate Soil Microbial Community and Functions?

Soil bacterial and fungal communities are suitable soil ecosystem health indicators due to their sensitivity to management practices and their role in soil ecosystem processes. Here, information on composition and functions of bacterial and fungal communities were evaluated at two phenological stages of sugarcane (six and twelve months, equivalent to the most intensive vegetative stage and to final maturation, respectively) when organomineral fertilizer, combined with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), was added into the soil. Organic compost enriched with apatite (C + A) or phosphorite (C
