Evaluation of a Diuresis Enhanced Non-Contrast Computed Tomography for Kidney Stones Protocol to Maximize Collecting System Distention.

Purpose: In urolithiasis patients, preoperative non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) commonly fails to provide sufficient distention of the renal collecting system to allow reliable preoperative planning for how best to approach a stone. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of a novel protocol, including oral hydration and an oral diuretic, on the distention of the renal collecting system. Patients and Methods: Twenty patients with a prior NCCT, who were scheduled to undergo a subsequent NCCT for urolithiasis assessment, were enrolled. Each patient was instructed to ingest 1 L of water

A Phantom Study of the Spatial Precision and Accuracy of Stereotactic Localization Using Computed Tomography Imaging with the Leksell Stereotactic System.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic localization of neurosurgical targets traditionally relies on computed tomography (CT), which is considered the optimal imaging modality for geometric accuracy. However, in-depth investigations that characterize the precision and accuracy of CT images are lacking. We used a CT phantom to examine interscanner precision and interprotocol accuracy in coordinate localization. METHODS: A polymethylacrylate phantom was scanned with Toshiba Aquilion 64 and GE Healthcare LightSpeed 16 CT scanners, using both helical and incremental single-slice (SS) image acquisition protocol

Dental anaesthesia for children - effects of a computer-controlled delivery system on pain and heart rate: a randomised clinical trial.

Local anaesthesia in dentistry is usually given by conventional injection through a syringe. In this randomised, single-blind, split-mouth clinical study we evaluated the perception of pain and changes in heart rate in children being given dental local anaesthesia using a computer-controlled device compared with that given using a traditional syringe. Participants were in good general health with no contraindications to local anaesthetics. One half of each maxilla was anaesthetised using each technique, the order having been randomly selected according to a computer-generated sequence. The hyp

Feasibility of a Tablet Computer System to Collect Patient-reported Symptom Severity in Patients Undergoing Diagnostic Coronary Angiography.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention is the most commonly performed revascularization modality for chronic stable angina, but does not improve survival or reduce major adverse cardiovascular event. Percutaneous coronary intervention in this population is performed primarily for symptomatic benefit; therefore, symptom reduction is an important marker of quality. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been developed for chest pain and dyspnea which are valid and responsive to treatment; however, they are not widely used in routine care. We present a model for use of PROMs in ro

Brain-computer interface driven functional electrical stimulation system for overground walking in spinal cord injury participant.

The current treatment for ambulation after spinal cord injury (SCI) is to substitute the lost behavior with a wheelchair; however, this can result in many co-morbidities. Thus, novel solutions for the restoration of walking, such as brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices, have been sought. This study reports on the first electroencephalogram (EEG) based BCI-FES system for overground walking, and its performance assessment in an individual with paraplegia due to SCI. The results revealed that the participant was able to purposefully operate the syste

When and why might a computer-aided detection (CAD) system interfere with visual search? An eye-tracking study.

RATIONAL AND OBJECTIVES: Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems are intended to improve performance. This study investigates how CAD might actually interfere with a visual search task. This is a laboratory study with implications for clinical use of CAD. METHODS: Forty-seven naive observers in two studies were asked to search for a target, embedded in 1/f(2.4) noise while we monitored their eye movements. For some observers, a CAD system marked 75% of targets and 10% of distractors, whereas other observers completed the study without CAD. In experiment 1, the CAD system's primary function was

Characterization of regional and local deposition of inhaled aerosol drugs in the respiratory system by computational fluid and particle dynamics methods.

The present work describes the local deposition patterns of therapeutic aerosols in the oropharyngeal airways, healthy and diseased bronchi and alveoli using computational fluid and particle dynamics techniques. A user-enhanced computational fluid dynamics commercial finite- volume software package was used to compute airflow fields, deposition efficiencies, and deposition patterns of therapeutic aerosols along the airways. Adequate numerical meshes, generated in different airway sections, enabled us to more precisely define trajectories and local deposition patterns of inhaled particles than
