The value of positron emission tomography in the clinical evaluation of dementia.

Positron emission tomography (PET) has been promoted as a means of improving the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the evidence to support its incremental value is unclear. To assess the evidence regarding the use of PET in the clinical evaluation of AD, a systematic review of the English-language literature indexed in MEDLINE (1975-January 2001), the Cochrane Library (issue 4, 2000), and health technology assessment (HTA) reports was conducted. Articles identified by this review process were graded for methodological and reporting quality using a standardized grading scheme. Sixteen

Early onset cerebellar ataxia with retained tendon reflexes (EOCA) and olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA): a computed tomographic study.

Computed tomographic (CT) studies in olivopontocerebellar atrophies (OPCA) and 'early onset cerebellar ataxia with retained tendon reflexes (EOCA)' are few and vary widely in methodology and criteria for cerebellar and brainstem atrophy. In this prospective study, CT scan observations on 26 patients (EOCA-11, OPCA-15) were compared with 31 controls using qualitative and quantitative assessment of cisterns, ventricles and atrophy of brain. Vermian and/or cerebellar hemispheric (predominantly anterior) atrophy was present in 80.8% and both were equally common. Cerebral cortical atrophy (26.9%) a

Minimum sample size for estimating the Net Promoter Score under a Bayesian approach.

At some moment in our lives, we are probably faced with the following question: How likely is it that you would recommend [company X] to a friend or colleague?. This question is related to the Net Promoter Score (NPS), a simple measure used by several companies as indicator of customer loyalty. Even though it is a well-known measure in the business world, studies that address the statistical properties or the sample size determination problem related to this measure are still scarce. We adopt a Bayesian approach to provide point and interval estimators for the NPS and discuss the determination

Sound generation mechanisms in a collapsible tube.

Collapsible tubes can be employed to study the sound generation mechanism in the human respiratory system. The goals of this work are (a) to determine the airflow characteristics connected to three different collapse states of a physiological tube and (b) to find a relation between the sound power radiated by the tube and its collapse state. The methodology is based on the implementation of computational fluid dynamics simulation on experimentally validated geometries. The flow is characterized by a radical change of behavior before and after the contact of the lumen. The maximum of the sound

Multimodality imaging in thoracic aortic diseases: a clinical consensus statement from the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging and the European Society of Cardiology working group on aorta and peripheral vascular diseases.

Imaging techniques play a pivotal role in the diagnosis, follow-up, and management of aortic diseases. Multimodality imaging provides complementary and essential information for this evaluation. Echocardiography, computed tomography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance, and nuclear imaging each have strengths and limitations in the assessment of the aorta. This consensus document aims to review the contribution, methodology, and indications of each technique for an adequate management of patients with thoracic aortic diseases. The abdominal aorta will be addressed elsewhere. While this document

Critical Social Media Analysis: Problematising Online Policy Representations of the Impact of Imprisonment on Families.

Drawing on the Foucauldian policy analysis framework developed by Bacchi (2009) and building on insights distilled from a study of discourses on the microblogging SNS, Twitter, this paper makes three novel contributions. It unravels how the impact of imprisonment on families is represented in or produced through policy discourses and other governance practices. It also demonstrates how SNS affordances enable affected families to resist and challenge the discourses and proffer alternatives strategies that can inform a transformational problematization model. The paper makes a third contribution

Pairwise likelihood estimation of latent autoregressive count models.

Latent autoregressive models are useful time series models for the analysis of infectious disease data. Evaluation of the likelihood function of latent autoregressive models is intractable and its approximation through simulation-based methods appears as a standard practice. Although simulation methods may make the inferential problem feasible, they are often computationally intensive and the quality of the numerical approximation may be difficult to assess. We consider instead a weighted pairwise likelihood approach and explore several computational and methodological aspects including estima

Measuring behavior across scales.

The need for high-throughput, precise, and meaningful methods for measuring behavior has been amplified by our recent successes in measuring and manipulating neural circuitry. The largest challenges associated with moving in this direction, however, are not technical but are instead conceptual: what numbers should one put on the movements an animal is performing (or not performing)? In this review, I will describe how theoretical and data analytical ideas are interfacing with recently-developed computational and experimental methodologies to answer these questions across a variety of contexts,

[Radiological procedures in the traumatised wrist].

Injuries of the wrist are difficult to diagnose because of the complex and narrow anatomic structures. On the basis of precise clinical examination, X-rays, CT and MRI are valuable additional tools that can be used. In the case of bone injury, spiral computer tomography with multiplanar reformatting is currently the method of choice. MRI is indicated for the identification of soft tissue or ligamentous injury and avital fragments or necrosis. Other diagnostic tools for the wrist are currently of minor importance. Technical and methodological innovations allow ever better visualisation and clas

Racial and geographic differences of Wiberg's angle from 400 ultrasonographic normal hips in Italian and Brazilian infants younger than 3 months old.

The Wiberg center edge angle (CEA) of 400 hip sonographies among 200 infants, 100 Italians and 100 Brazilians, aged from 15 days to 90 days, whose hip joints were considered normal, from the ultrasonographic point of view (1a and 1b) according to Graf's classification were measured. For the CEA measurements in the studied material, the authors used their own methodology developed for this purpose, which is based on basic geometric concepts and applied by one graphic computer program. In the studied material, the statistical analysis of the results obtained in the measurement of the CEA showed

From mechanistic modeling to AI-driven design: computational strategies for targeting the γ-secretase complex.

Advancements in computational biology are transforming the study of complex membrane proteins and their therapeutic targeting. The γ-secretase complex, a quintessential intramembrane protease implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and more than 150 other substrates, provides a powerful exemplar to illustrate this transformative shift. Traditional γ-secretase inhibitors have been constrained by off-target toxicity, particularly through disruption of Notch signaling, underscoring the need for deeper mechanistic insights, now increasingly enabled by modern computational methodologies. We evaluate

Ai derivation and exploration of antibiotic class spaces.

PURPOSE: The rapid evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses an urgent global health crisis. A key gap in current antibiotic discovery approaches is the absence of automated chemical synthesis methods designed to systematically generate and evaluate compounds within specific antibiotic classes. We address this gap through fragment-based computational experiments that systematically explore antibiotic chemical spaces. METHODS: Our computational methodology consists of three steps: fragmentation of known compounds (eMolFrag), generating new molecular structures by recombining fragments (

A patient-specific CTA-CFD framework deciphers hemodynamic heterogeneity after fenestrated TEVAR: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite the widespread use of fenestrated thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), clinical outcomes exhibit considerable heterogeneity whose underlying hemodynamic mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to establish a patient-specific computational framework integrating postoperative computed tomography angiography (CTA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to quantitatively evaluate morpho-hemodynamic alterations after fenestrated TEVAR. METHODS: Six aortic dissection patients undergoing TEVAR with left subclavian artery (LSA) fenestration (th

In silico study of cuspid' periodontal ligament damage under parafunctional and traumatic conditions of whole-mouth occlusions. A patient-specific evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although traumatic loading has been associated with periodontal ligament (PDL) damage and therefore with several oral disorders, the damage phenomena and the traumatic loads involved are still unclear. The complex composition and extremely thin size of the PDL make experimentation difficult, requiring computational studies that consider the macroscopic loading conditions, the microscopic composition and fine detailed geometry of the tissue. In this study, a new methodology to analyse the damage phenomena in the collagen network and the extracellular matrix of the PDL

Global prevalence and clinical implications of coronary artery dominance: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery dominance (CD) influences myocardial perfusion, collateral vessel development, and cardiovascular outcomes. However, reported prevalence estimates vary across populations and study methodologies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the global prevalence of CD variations, and evaluate their association with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic review of MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted to identify studies reporting the prevalence of CD. Pooled prevalence estimates an

Evaluating potential effects of distress symptoms' interventions on suicidality: Analyses of in silico scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Complexity science perspectives like the network approach to psychopathology have emerged as a prominent methodological toolkit to generate novel hypotheses on complex etiologies surrounding various mental health problems and inform intervention targets. Such approach may be pivotal in advancing early intervention of suicidality among the younger generation (10-35 year-olds), the increasing burden of which needs to be reversed within a limited window of opportunity to avoid massive long-term repercussions. However, the network approach currently lends limited insight into the poten

Semantic Feature Extraction Using SBERT for Dementia Detection.

Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to the development of cognitive deficits, such as aphasia, apraxia, and agnosia. It is currently considered one of the most significant major medical problems worldwide, primarily affecting the elderly. This condition gradually impairs the patient's cognition, eventually leading to the inability to perform everyday tasks without assistance. Since dementia is an incurable disease, early detection plays an important role in delaying its progression. Because of this, tools and methods have been developed to help accurately diagnose patients in th

Constructing and validating a transferable epidemic risk index in data scarce environments using open data: A case study for dengue in the Philippines.

Epidemics are among the most costly and destructive natural hazards globally. To reduce the impacts of infectious disease outbreaks, the development of a risk index for infectious diseases can be effective, by shifting infectious disease control from emergency response to early detection and prevention. In this study, we introduce a methodology to construct and validate an epidemic risk index using only open data, with a specific focus on scalability. The external validation of our risk index makes use of distance sampling to correct for underreporting of infections, which is often a major sou
