OBJECTIVE: Identifying condom use frequency and factors predisposing, facilitating and reinforcing its consistent use in college students.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analytical study involving multivariate analysis. The sample consisted of 397 students who were randomly selected using stratified sampling by faculty who had applied a computer-assisted survey entitled, "Recognizing my sexual health."
RESULTS: 33 % of the sample population reported routine condom use. The predisposing factors for regular condom use were the intention to use one and high self-efficacy regarding use with

Only 27.8% (n=277) reported ever having had sex, of these only 31.4% used condoms every time (those in action and maintenance). Condom use among women was lower than among men with men 5.1 times more likely to use condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections (OR=5.1, 95% CI: 2.14-12.16, p=0.0002). PURPOSE: Although sterilized women do not need condoms for pregnancy prevention, they may still be at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Previous studies have shown that sterilized women have lower rates of condom use but have not controlled for the nested multilevel structure of data in which individual women have multiple partners with different STI risk factors. We address this limitation by testing the association of condom use and tubal ligation using multilevel analysis.
METHODS: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of sterilized and nonsterilized women aged 18…

Despite condom interventions since year 2000 with the transgender (hijra) population, condom use remains low. Consequently, hijra suffer from higher rates of active syphilis, putting them under threat of HIV transmission. In an ethnographic study, 50 in-depth interviews with diverse groups of hijra along with 20 key-informants interviews with various stakeholders, and 13 focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with comprehensive field observations. Findings indicate that most hijra understand the importance of condoms, but none use condoms consistently. Complex underlying reasons positio…

Information about a specific sexual event can shed light on factors that facilitate or impede condom use. Data were collected by a random digit-dialing telephone survey of unmarried Latino adults in 10 states with large Latino populations. In multivariate analyses, among heterosexually active unmarried Latino men (n = 591), those who reported having a condom available, engaging in a conversation about condoms, having a non-steady, casual partner or a one-time partner, were more likely to use condoms. Men were more likely to use condoms when no other birth control was used or pregnancy was not …

PURPOSE: Differential participation and retention can bias the findings of a follow-up study. This problem was evaluated in a study of barrier contraception among women at high STD risk. The goal of this study was to identify predictors of participation and retention and determine whether they could influence study results.
METHODS: Six-month follow-up study of women attending STD clinics. Determinants of participation and retention were evaluated using logistic and proportional hazards models.
RESULTS: Agreement to participate was associated with young age, black race, low education and inc

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed whether participant baseline characteristics modified the effects of a skill-based intervention promoting co … s as significant modifiers of intervention effectiveness on consistent condom use: intention to use condoms next time, early-age sexual debut, marital status combined with place of intercourse, and substance use before sex.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that participant baseline characteristics can be modifiers of intervention effectiveness.

Research with injection drug users (IDUs), at risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV, has focused primarily on their risky drug practices, with far less attention paid to their risky sex behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine what variables were associated with an increase in condom use following an HIV intervention with 3357 IDUs in nine cities. Participants reported using condoms during 15% of their sexual encounters prior to the HIV intervention, and during 22% of their sexual encounters six months later. A logistic regression analysis indicated that individuals who increase…

Although there is some evidence that relationship-level factors influence sexual behavior, they have received far less attention than individual-level factors as potential correlates of condom use. This study surveyed 210 undergraduate men and women to examine the association between relationship characteristics and condom use. Higher levels of love, longer relationships and more serious and committed relationships were individually associated with less condom use. In a multiple logistic regression model controlling for HIV/sexually transmitted disease (STD) risk perception and contraceptive m

This study examined the relations between alcohol use, perceived effects of alcohol use, and condom use in three different types of sexual partners in African American and Hispanic youth. Data were drawn from a household probability sample of minority youth (N = 1435) living in Detroit. Relationships were examined among three types of sexual partners: "married/lived with" partners, "knew well" partners, and "casual" partners. The effects of alcohol on condom use and perceived effects of alcohol on condom use were investigated using multiple regression with controls for demographic variables an

Two hundred thirty-seven college students involved in heterosexual relationships were surveyed to determine the effects of relationship type and use of forms of contraception other than condoms on condom use. Findings indicated that in the context of a short-term, monogamous relationship, the use of another form of birth control was associated with decreased condom use. In addition, 20% of the participants reported that they had wanted to use a condom for disease prevention on at least one occasion but had decided not to do so because they were using another form of contraception. Implications…
