Interferons are proving useful in the management of recalcitrant condylomata acuminata. Dosage schedules have been established that balance efficacy and systemic toxicity. Alone, however, interferons are not entirely effective in every patient. In combination with conventional medical and surgical modalities, they offer hope for the control of an often frustrating and potentially serious virus infection.

Eight cases of bowenoid papulosis are reported. The clinical diagnoses were confirmed by histology. In one case an immunoperoxidase method showed the presence of papillomavirus antigen in the nucleus of the most superficial epidermal cells. We consider bowenoid papulosis to be a condition with specific features that distinguish it clinically and histologically from carcinoma in situ and condylomata acuminata.

The first results of laser surgery in superficial penile tumours are reported. In 2 patients with condylomata acuminata, 2 cases of giant condylomata Buschke-Löwenstein and in 2 patients suffering from early stage penile cancer diagnostic and/or therapeutic treatments using carbon dioxide or neodymium-YAG laser have been performed. We investigated the distribution of genital human papillomaviruses (HPVs) among 171 consenting men of which four were involved twice in this study. The DNA was obtained from 7 normal tissues and 168 genital lesions of which 115 were diagnosed as condylomata acuminata, 17 as condylomata plana and 36 as HPV-associated lesions (papules, lichen-like lesions, etc.). The studies summarized have shown that therapy of condylomata acuminata with interferon is effective. The route of administration does not appear to influence the results; the intralesional, intramuscular, and subcutaneous routes were effective. Additional research is required to determine whether the natural interferon or recombinant product is superior. The appropriate administration schedule may also not have been attained.

Conventional therapies for condyloma acuminatum in children are often associated with unsatisfactory response and high recurrence rate. Here, we present a 9-year-old girl with vulvar condyloma acuminatum successfully treated with topical 5-aminolaevulinic acid mediated photodynamic therapy. 5-aminolaevulinic acid mediated photodynamic therapy is a promising therapy for condylomata acuminata in children.

Giant condyloma acuminata, first described by Buschke and Löwenstein in 1925 as a penile lesion, is extremely rare in the anorectal region. The cauliflower-like tumor behaves clinically in a malignant fashion, although it shows no histomorphological criteria of malignancy. Up to the time of writing only 33 cases of anorectal origin, 42% with malignant transformation, have been published. The present casuistry study deals with condylomata acuminata-like lesions of the vulva of two sexually mature 20 and 22 years old Turkish sisters, and a 34 year old Yugoslavian women. Based on clinical and histological particularities the verruciform structures are interpreted as - atavistic? - malformation without functional significance. Their relation to the papillas of corona glans are proved in detail.

Except some useful and tried, but sometimes not optimal, therapeutical methods, medicine still discovers new diagnostic and therapeutical procedures. Authors describe new trends in photodynamic diagnostics and treatment (PDD and PDT) of some vulvar epithelial diseases: condylomata acuminata and squamous cell vulvar cancer.

Female genital condylomata acuminata were examined for DNA content. Diploid and polyploid DNA distributions, including tetraploidy and octaploidy, were found. These findings are in clear counter-distinction to squamous intraepithelial lesions, which have been found to be aneuploid. DNA quantitation, therefore, can be used in difficult cases to distinguish between condylomatous and neoplastic epithelium.

Reported are first experiences with Nd:YAG laser treatment of benign, semimalignant, and malignant skin tumors in 90 patients. Treated lesions included condylomata acuminata, basal cell carcinomas, solar keratosis, squamous cell carcinomas, and secondary malignant skin tumors. First clinical and histological results are promising, but long-term follow-up is required to judge the definite efficacy of this therapeutical modality.

In HIV-infections, skin manifestations are manifold and are conditioned mainly by the immunodeficiency. Kaposi's sarcoma, oral hairy leucoplakia and candidiasis of the esophagus are of diagnostic significance as same as a severe course of opportunistic infections e.g. herpes simplex, herpes zooster, cryptococcosis, dermatomycoses, verrucae vulgares, condylomata acuminata and others. Sometimes skin manifestations are the first perceivable sign of an HIV-infection.

Verrucous growths of the genitalia in young patients are usually condylomata acuminata. In five cases this type of genital lesion, viewed by light microscopy, showed dysplastic cellular changes of Bowen disease, a diagnosis that was further confirmed by electron microscopy. Bowen disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of verrucous lesions of genitalia in young people and should be ruled out by histologic examination.

We give a survey of the latest developments in dermatovirology. The actual epidemiologic situation is described with special reference to the increasing incidences of AIDS, condylomata acuminata, mollusca contagiosa, and herpes simplex type 2. The dermatovirological progress achieved during the last few years is mostly due to improved diagnostic techniques, including electron microscopy, and to the introduction of specific virostatic agents.

In the certain skin-warts, condylomata acuminata, oral-, laryngeal- and bronchial papillomas a morphologically identic virus is often seen. This virus belongs to the papova-virus-group and causes papillomas: Independant of their localization their clinical behaviour is very similar. Using cytophotometric methods we tried to find out if there are any signs which allow to reveal malignancy in continous reappearing papillomas.
