Streamlining the Abstract Selection Process for the American Society of Breast Surgeons' Annual Meeting by Utilizing Large Language Models.

PURPOSE: The American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) receives an increasing number of abstracts for its annual meeting, resulting in increasing time and effort for peer-review. We aimed to compare artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) to human-generated scores to explore if AI-review is a plausible abstract screening process. METHODS: Abstracts published from the 2025 ASBrS meeting were assessed with three LLMs: OpenAI's GPT4-o (GPT), Meta's Llama-3.1-405b (Llama) and DeepSeek's DeepSeek-V3 (DeepSeek). Abstracts were analyzed using zero shot (ZS), which included the 20

Is it time for AI to take a leading role in mass trauma mental health response?

Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) offer opportunity and risk in mass trauma response, disasters and crisis. This narrative review synthesizes material from our "AI to the Rescue" panel at the inaugural PreAct Mass Trauma conference in June 2025, integrating relevant literature and the authors' expertise. We examine AI approaches beyond large language models (LLMs), including traditional ML and multimodal systems, while grounding the concept of "AI-made disasters" as a necessary third disaster type alongside Human-made and Natural, supported by emerging evidence of AI-cause

On the prowl for disciplinary vassals: Neurologists, psychiatrists, and clinical psychologists discuss science, technology, and profession at the National Research Council's Conference on Relations of Psychiatry to Psychology (1921).

The 1910s were a complex and rapidly changing decade in mental hygiene, marked by institutional innovation, professional development, and the expanding reconceptualization of mental disease and maladjustment. This growth frequently generated friction between practical clinical sciences, particularly psychiatry and consulting clinical psychology. After years of mounting tension, the National Research Council convened a joint conference in 1921 on the "Relations of Psychiatry to Psychology," bringing together 12 representatives to debate and draft resolutions intended to harmonize collaboration.

A Review on Imaging in Axial Spondyloarthritis: SPARTAN 2024 Annual Meeting Proceedings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this publication is to review the role of imaging in axial spondyloarthritis. These findings were presented at the SPARTAN annual meeting in May 2024. RECENT FINDINGS: Imaging plays a major role in the diagnosis and monitoring of axial spondyloarthritis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of active inflammatory lesions (bone marrow edema, capsulitis, inflammation in an erosion cavity, enthesitis, fluid in the joint) and structural lesions (erosions, fat lesions, fat metaplasia in an erosion cavity, bone bud, ankylosis) aid in the early diagnosis of axi

[Gender distribution of scientific contributions at German ophthalmological conferences-a baseline study].

BACKGROUND: The proportion of female ophthalmologists in Germany has risen to approximately 50% in recent years, and approximately 66% of medical students are women. This represents a reversal of the past situation with a male predominance. Despite this change, many international studies show that women are still underrepresented at scientific conferences, particularly among invited speakers, chairpersons, and program committees. This study aims to investigate whether these differences in gender representation are also reflected at German ophthalmological congresses and whether the situation h

GRAPPA Point-Counterpoint: Should Biologics Be Used for Mild Psoriasis?

Psoriasis (PsO) is commonly classified as mild, moderate, or severe, usually based on body surface area (BSA) or other validated measures. Although most dermatologists agree that mild PsO should be treated with topical therapies, there are circumstances where mild or limited PsO should be treated with biologics, even as first line. A debate about use of topical vs biologic therapy was presented at the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) 2023 annual meeting. Arguments in favor of using biologics when patients have mild disease on limited BSA included

Emerging tick-borne diseases and blood safety: summary of a public workshop.

Tick-borne agents of disease continue to emerge and subsequently expand their geographic distribution. The threat to blood safety by tick-borne agents is ever increasing and requires constant surveillance concomitant with implementation of appropriate intervention methods. In April 2017, the Food and Drug Administration organized a public workshop on emerging tick-borne pathogens (excluding Babesia microti and Lyme disease) designed to provide updates on the current understanding of emerging tick-borne diseases, thereby allowing for extended discussions to determine if decisions regarding miti

Head Injury in Soccer: From Science to the Field; summary of the head injury summit held in April 2017 in New York City, New York.

There has been an increased focus and awareness of head injury and sport-related concussion (SRC) across all sports from the medical and scientific communities, sports organisations, legislators, the media and the general population. Soccer, in particular, has been a focus of attention due to the popularity of the game, the frequency of SRC and the hypothesised effects of repetitive heading of the ball. Major League Soccer, US Soccer and the National Women's Soccer League jointly hosted a conference entitled, 'Head Injury in Soccer: From Science to the Field', on 21-22 April 2017 in New York C

Evaluating Health Span in Preclinical Models of Aging and Disease: Guidelines, Challenges, and Opportunities for Geroscience.

Life extension is no longer considered sufficient evidence of delayed aging in research animals. It must also be demonstrated that a broad swathe of health indicators have been extended. During a retreat of the Geroscience Network, a consortium of basic and clinical aging researchers, potential measures of mouse health were considered for their potential as easily standardized, highly informative metrics. Major health domains considered were neuromuscular, cognitive, cardiovascular, metabolic, and inflammatory functions as well as body composition and energetics and a multitude of assays inter
