The relationship between repeated unintended pregnancies and current contraceptive use: National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) 2006-2008 data.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the number of unintended pregnancies and current contraceptive use. This is a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional survey, the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth, which included 4,052 women between the ages of 15 and 44 years. A statistically significant association was found between the nonuse of contraceptives and repeated unintended pregnancies, as well as among those who used an effective contraceptive method and repeated unintended pregnancies. Nurses are encouraged to ask questions about intendedness of pregnanci

Contraception for the adolescent and young adult with congenital heart disease.

Increasing numbers of females born with congenital heart disease are reaching childbearing age. Practitioners involved in the management of the adolescents or adults must be aware not only of the risks of pregnancy associated with varying types of CHD but with other issues involving the reproductive cycle to provide appropriate care, counseling, and education.

One-year results using a risk scoring system in a family planning clinic.

During one year (from 1/1/85 to 12/31/85) 1038 women sought contraception at a family planning clinic. Contraception was recommended using a risk scoring system to increase the suitability of a method to the needs of an individual woman. Among the 546 women fitted with a IUD (copper or unmedicated), the continuation rate was 90.49%. Removal rates for pregnancy or bleeding were small compared with the rates published in the current literature. Among the 472 women using oral contraceptive pills (combined or triphasic), the continuation rate was 99.16%: the triphasic pill was well accepted, witho

Risk factors for menstrual toxic shock syndrome: results of a multistate case-control study.

For assessment of current risk factors for developing toxic shock syndrome (TSS) during menstruation, a case-control study was performed. Cases with onset between 1 January 1986 and 30 June 1987 were ascertained in six study areas with active surveillance for TSS. Age-matched controls were selected from among each patient's friends and women with the same telephone exchange. Of 118 eligible patients, 108 were enrolled, as were 185 "friend controls" and 187 telephone exchange-matched controls. Tampon use was a risk factor for developing TSS during menstruation (odds ratio = 29; 95% confidence i

The contraceptive effect of a novel filtering-type nano-copper complex/polymer composites intra-vas device on male animals.

Contraceptive techniques which target vas deferens have been paid great attention for their good efficacy, safety and reversibility. We have made a filtering-type intra-vas device (IVD) using nano-copper complex/polymer composites. Twenty male adult Beagle dogs and 40 male rabbits were randomly assigned to four groups (sham-operation, IVD, reversal and vasectomy groups). Dogs' semen parameters, concentration of α-glucosidase, copper and zinc ions were tested pre-operation and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-operation. The pregnancy rates of the rabbits were evaluated by mating trials after the IVDs

[Hormonal contraceptives].

Many changes occurred in hormonal contraceptives in the past few years to improve benefice/risks balance and get a better tolerance and observance. These changes concerned the decrease of steroids doses, changes in estroprogestogen sequence, use of less androgenic progestogen and more recently the use of new ways of administration with transdermal system, vaginal ring or subdermal contraceptive implant to avoid daily use. This article makes a review of hormonal contraceptives available in France and benefits of recent innovations.

Successful Provision of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception in a Sexual Health Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Women who attend sexual health clinics are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) are very effective contraceptive methods, but the provision of LARC in such clinics is not well described in the literature. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of women who presented to Denver Sexual Health Clinic for any reason and received family planning services between April 1, 2016, and October 31, 2018. We assessed demographic and clinical factors associated with contraceptive method received and c

U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use, 2016.

The 2016 U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR) addresses a select group of common, yet sometimes controversial or complex, issues regarding initiation and use of specific contraceptive methods. These recommendations for health care providers were updated by CDC after review of the scientific evidence and consultation with national experts who met in Atlanta, Georgia, during August 26-28, 2015. The information in this report updates the 2013 U.S. SPR (CDC. U.S. selected practice recommendations for contraceptive use, 2013. MMWR 2013;62[No. RR-5]). Major updates

Mechanism of action of intrauterine devices: biochemical changes.

The mechanism of action of intrauterine devices varies from one type of device to another, although the principle of action is the same, namely, to interfere with the physiology of reproduction at the endometrial level. The biochemical changes of the endometrial tissue and the composition of the uterine fluid have been reviewed in relation to the use of inert, copper-medicated and steroid-releasing IUDs. All IUDs, whether inert or medicated, provoke a significant increase in the number of neutrophils, mononuclear cells and plasma cells, the presence of which is unrelated to the tissue infiltra

Dual use of condoms with other contraceptive methods among adolescents and young women in the United States.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of and factors associated with dual method use (i.e., condom with hormonal contraception or an intrauterine device) among adolescents and young women in the United States. METHODS: We used 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth data from 2,093 unmarried females aged 15-24 years and at risk for unintended pregnancy. Using multivariable logistic regression, we estimated adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the associations between dual method use at last sex and sociodemographic, behavioral, reproductive history, and se

Current use of an intrauterine device and risk of tubal pregnancy.

Using data from a population-based, case-control study, we assessed risk of tubal pregnancy associated with use of an intrauterine device (IUD) at the time of conception. Cases were 249 members of Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound who experienced a tubal pregnancy between 1981 and 1986. Controls were 831 members at risk of ectopic pregnancy who were similar to cases with respect to age and county of residence, but otherwise selected at random. Risk of tubal pregnancy associated with current IUD use was compared separately to that among users of various other (or no) contraceptive methods

Placement of an intrauterine device within 48 hours after early medical abortion-a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices are safe, well-tolerated, and known to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies. At medical abortion, intrauterine devices are placed at a follow-up visit. Patients who miss this visit risk being left without contraception. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate if placement of an intrauterine device within 48 hours of completed medical abortion at up to 63 days' gestation leads to higher user rates at 6 months after the abortion compared with placement at 2 to 4 weeks after abortion. Furthermore, we aimed to compare continued use of intrauterine devices, s
