Free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in older adults after regular senior elastic band exercising: an experimental randomized controlled pilot study.

AIM: The aim of this study was to pilot test the effects of regular senior elastic band exercises on the generation of free radicals and antioxidant enzyme activities in older adults. BACKGROUND: Long-term regular exercises have positive health promotion outcomes. On the contrary, high-intensity, high-speed and short-term exercises in older adults may increase free radicals and cause chronic disease and ageing effect. DESIGN: A prospective randomized controlled pilot study. METHODS: Data were collected during 2012. Twenty-five older adults were recruited from a community care centre, southe

Why do we Need to Control Alcohol Use Through Legislative Measures? A South East Asia Perspective?

BACKGROUND: Even though prevalence of alcohol use in the world is very high, it has not been brought under legal control in several countries, contrary to other controlled substances like opium, cocaine, cannabis, and so on. AIM: To demonstrate the similarities in both alcohol and opioid dependence by comparing and contrasting the course of clinical dependence for both substances. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutively admitted patients during the period August 2005 to May 2006, in the Center for Addiction Psychiatry, Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, India, with ICD-10 (DCR) diagnosis o…

Specific expression of substance P in synovial tissues of patients with symptomatic, non-reducing internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint: comparison with clinical findings.

Our aim was to find out the extent of expression of substance P in synovial tissue from the human temporomandibular joints (TMJ) with symptomatic, non-reducing internal derangement, and to investigate the relationship between substance P and clinical findings. Fifty-four joints in 54 patients were examined immunohistochemically. Specimens of synovial tissue from 10 joints in 8 subjects with habitual dislocation of the TMJ with no pain were examined as controls. Cells that stained for substance P were found mainly among the endothelial cells in the blood vessels beneath the lining cells in syno

Acupuncture as a detoxification treatment: an analysis of controlled research.

The research literature on the use of acupuncture as a substance abuse treatment is reviewed. In recent years numerous descriptive reports have been published concerning the efficacy of acupuncture in alleviating withdrawal symptoms with substance abusers attempting abstinence. While a limited number of experimental design studies have been conducted in this area, results from controlled studies generally support that acupuncture can be effective in assisting active drug and alcohol users become abstinent. Controlled, experimental research on acupuncture and related techniques used as substanc

Decreased cerebrospinal fluid levels of substance P in patients with Rett syndrome.

To clarify the mechanism of brain and spinal cord impairment in Rett syndrome (RS), we measured the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of substance P in 20 patients with RS including 16 childhood patients and 4 adult patients. Findings were compared with those obtained in age-matched controls and diseased controls. The CSF level of substance P was significantly lower in patients with RS compared with controls. The alteration in the CSF level of substance P may be related to the neurological impairment, especially autonomic dysfunction, and neuropathological involvement of dorsal root ganglia and

Differential effects of sex on substance use between first episode psychosis patients and healthy people.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in psychosis is an important field of study given that it can be a risk factor for the development of psychosis and can give rise to psychotic symptoms. Studies of substance use in first episode psychosis patients do not frequently assess non-pathological substance consumption among patients, but rather the prevalence of substance abuse or dependence disorders. Moreover, most of these studies do not address the effects of sex in sufficient depth, and the consumption of caffeine or tobacco, which are two of the most frequently used substances, is often not assessed. Substance abuse, pathological gambling, and impulsiveness.

This study evaluated behavioral and self-report indices of impulsiveness in pathological gambling substance abusers (n=27), non-pathological gambling substance abusers (n=63), and non-pathological gambling/non-substance abusing controls (n=21). The Bechara card task measured preferences for decks of cards that ranged in magnitude and probability of delayed and immediate rewards and punishers. The Stanford Time Perception Inventory (STPI) assessed orientation to the future, the Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale evaluated sensation seeking, and the Eysenck and Barratt scales measured impulsivity

Seeking under threat of adversity: assessing control over reward pursuit in rats.

RATIONALE: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic relapsing brain disorder that is characterised by loss of control over substance use. A variety of rodent models employing punishment setups have been developed to assess loss of control over substance use, i.e. persistent substance use despite negative consequences, to facilitate the translation of findings from animal studies to the human situation. OBJECTIVES: Since the negative consequences of addictive behaviour are typically unpredictable, we here present the Seeking under Threat of Adversity (STA) task in rats, that incorporates cued

Relationship intervention moderates the association between substance use and biological aging among Black adults.

OBJECTIVE: Black Americans face disproportionate challenges related to substance use and the health impacts of substance use, including accelerated aging. Accordingly, interventions are needed to protect against the harmful effects of substance use on accelerated aging. The present study examined whether the Protecting Strong African American Families (ProSAAF) intervention, a relationship education program designed to promote strong relationships among Black families, moderated the association between substance use and accelerated aging among Black couples. METHOD: Black couples received eit

Effects of participation in and connectedness to the LGBT community on substance use involvement of sexual minority young people.

INTRODUCTION: Research shows disproportionate levels of substance use among sexual minority young people. A range of reasons for these disparities have been suggested, including connectedness to and participation in the LGBT community. Little is known about how these constructs are related to substance use involvement in sexual minority (sub)groups or how these relationships are affected by other factors. METHODS: 1266 young sexual minority Australians completed a cross-sectional online survey. Multiple regressions were conducted to assess associations between connectedness to and participati

Nonlinear EEG Complexity as a Marker of Maladaptive Brain Plasticity in Substance Use Disorders: A Multi-Group Machine Learning Classification Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to addictive substances induces persistent alterations in neural dynamics, reflecting maladaptive brain plasticity. While such changes are well documented using neuroimaging techniques, their electrophysiological signatures-particularly those derived from nonlinear EEG complexity-remain insufficiently explored across diverse substance use profiles. This preliminary study aims to investigate whether nonlinear EEG complexity measures can serve as sensitive biomarkers of maladaptive plasticity in substance use disorder (SUD) across multiple substance categories. Improvement of impaired albumin binding capacity in acute-on-chronic liver failure by albumin dialysis.

Extracorporeal albumin dialysis (ECAD) enables the elimination of albumin bound substances and is used as artificial liver support system. Albumin binding function for the benzodiazepine binding site specific marker Dansylsarcosine was estimated in plasma samples of 22 patients with cirrhosis and hyperbilirubinaemia (ECAD: n = 12; control: n = 10) during a period of 30 days in a randomized controlled clinical ECAD trial. Albumin Binding Capacity (ABiC) at baseline was reduced to 31.8% (median; range 24%-74%) and correlated to the severity of liver disease. Within two weeks a significant improv

[Therapeutic plasmapheresis--a critical review in the light of the current literature].

For centuries it has been the dream of many physicians to cure illnesses by eliminating disease provoking substances which are thought to circulate in the human body. Technical developments during the past 20 years have made therapeutic plasma exchange (TP) a useful procedure for clinical application. Because of the lack of well controlled studies the true benefit of the method remains speculative in many clinical situations. Since the report of the American Medical Association (AMA) Panel on Therapeutic Plasmapheresis in 1985 several controlled studies on this subject have been published in r

Prevention and reversal of obesity and glucose intolerance in mice by DHA derivatives.

The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), exert hypolipidemic effects and prevent development of obesity and insulin resistance in animals fed high-fat diets. We sought to determine the efficacy of alpha-substituted DHA derivatives as lipid-lowering, antiobesity, and antidiabetic agents. C57BL/6 mice were given a corn oil-based high-fat (35% weight/weight) diet (cHF), or cHF with 1.5% of lipids replaced with alpha-methyl DHA ethyl ester (Substance 1), alpha-ethyl DHA ethyl ester (Substance 2), alpha,alpha-di-methyl DHA ethyl est

Model-based analysis of stop-signal data reveals robust neural and clinical correlates of evidence accumulation but not inhibition.

Poor inhibitory control and decision-making are often considered as risks for substance use and other adverse psychiatric outcomes. The Stop-Signal Task (SST) is a widely used protocol, from which inhibitory control is indexed by stop signal reaction time (SSRT). However, heretofore models of SSRT may be too simplistic to capture complex processes underlying task performance. In contrast, the Racing Diffusion Ex-Gaussian ABCD (RDEX-ABCD) model provides a more mechanistic framework, capturing both inhibitory control and task-general decision-making processes during the SST. Here, we applied the

Substance use in individuals at clinical high risk of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: A series of research reports has indicated that the use of substances such as cannabis, alcohol and tobacco are higher in youth at clinical high risk (CHR) of developing psychosis than in controls. Little is known about the longitudinal trajectory of substance use, and findings on the relationship between substance use and later transition to psychosis in CHR individuals are mixed. METHOD: At baseline and 6- and 12-month follow-ups, 735 CHR and 278 control participants completed the Alcohol and Drug Use Scale and a cannabis use questionnaire. The longitudinal trajectory of substan

International normalised ratio normalisation in patients with coumarin-related intracranial haemorrhages--the INCH trial: a randomised controlled multicentre trial to compare safety and preliminary efficacy of fresh frozen plasma and prothrombin complex--study design and protocol.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral haemorrhage is the most feared complication in patients who are on treatment with vitamin K antagonists. Vitamin K antagonist related intracerebral haemorrhage occurs in about 10% of patients. Intracerebral haemorrhage has the worst prognosis of all subtypes of stroke including spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage, and a mortality rate of up to about 65%. The higher rate of haematoma expansion due to rebleeding is thought to be responsible for the higher mortality. Current international treatment recommendations include fresh frozen plasma and prothrombin complex con
