Delayed haemorrhage in the splenium of the corpus callosum after aneurysm rupture.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECT: Delayed haemorrhage in the splenium of the corpus callosum after aneurysm rupture is a rare finding. It can be defined as a haemorrhage not present at the initial diagnosis of subarachnoid bleeding, in the context of an aneurysm not located in the corpus callosum vascularization. Only three such cases have been reported, all with focal and circumscribed haematomas. We describe a case of diffuse haemorrhage along the splenium fibres. PATIENT: A 75-year-old woman was attended for an acute cognitive deterioration. Imaging studies revealed an aneurysm in the anterior commun…

Anatomical and electrophysiological manifestations in a patient with congenital corpus callosum agenesis.

The corpus callosum is the major brain structure responsible for the transferring of information between the two hemispheres. In congenital agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), an alternative functional connection might exist between the hemispheres; however, this has yet to be demonstrated. The present study evaluated a 27-year-old man with ACC but no detectable motor function deficits using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), movement-related cortical potential (MRCP), and interhemispheric inhibition (IHI). The MRCP was analyzed at the electrodes of C3, FCZ, and C4. IHI was measured using pair…

Developmental trajectories of the corpus callosum in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: It was recently found that the development of typical patterns of prefrontal, but not posterior, cortical asymmetry is disrupted in right-handed youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using longitudinal data, we tested the hypothesis that there would be a congruent disruption in the growth of the anterior corpus callosum, which contains white matter tracts connecting prefrontal cortical regions. METHODS: Areas of five subregions of the corpus callosum were quantified using a semiautomated method from 828 neuroanatomic magnetic resonance scans acquired from 236…

Genu of corpus callosum as a prognostic factor in diffuse axonal injury.

OBJECT: Previous studies have shown a relationship between a patient's stage of diffuse axonal injury (DAI) and outcome. However, few studies have assessed whether a specific lesion or type of corpus callosum injury (CCI) influences outcome in patients with DAI. The authors investigated the effect of various DAIs and CCIs on outcome in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 78 consecutive patients with DAI who were seen between May 2004 and March 2010. Outcome was evaluated using the Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (EGOS) 1 year after TBI. Pat…

Thick corpus callosum: a clue to the diagnosis of fetal septopreoptic holoprosencephaly?

We describe fetal septopreoptic holoprosencephaly (HPE) associated with a thick corpus callosum (CC) diagnosed with MRI in a fetus at 31 weeks' gestation. Our report supports a recently published study connecting a thick fetal CC to other brain abnormalities. On diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), the body of the CC contained an abnormal longitudinal bundle, presumed to be a congenital heterotopic cingulum. Prenatal and postmortem brain MRI with DTI, CT, and pathological analyses are described and illustrated.

Corpus callosum involvement is a consistent feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: While the hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is corticospinal tract in combination with lower motor neuron degenerat … tter involvement. RESULTS: A consistent reduction in fractional anisotropy was demonstrated in the corpus callosum of the ALS group, extending rostrally and bilaterally to the region of the primary motor cortices, independent of the degree of clinical upper motor neuron involvement. Matched regional radial diffusivity increase supported the concept of anterograd …

Prenatal diagnosis and outcome of partial agenesis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum.

OBJECTIVE: To present antenatal sonographic findings and outcome of fetuses with hypoplasia or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. METHODS: The database of our ultrasound laboratory was searched retrospectively for cases of hypoplasia or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum suspected at antenatal neurosonography between 1998 and 2008 and confirmed by pathology or postnatal neuroimaging. In surviving infants, clinical follow-up had been arranged to assess neurodevelopmental outcome. RESULTS: Nineteen fetuses with callosal underdevelopment were identified at a median gestational age of…

Morphology of the corpus callosum in treatment-resistant schizophrenia and major depression.

OBJECTIVE: To identify possible differences in the mean midsagittal corpus callosum (CC) total and subdivision areas in treatment-resistant schizophrenia and depression (TRS and TRD) patients. METHOD: Areas of the total CC and its five equidistant subregions (from CC1 to CC5) obtained by parallel grid partitioning schemes were manually segmented from brain MRI of 42 TRS, 45 TRD patients and 30 healthy controls. The intracranial volume (ICV) normalized areas were calculated and compared between groups. RESULTS: When compared with controls, patients with TRS had reduced ICV and a larger CC5, a…

Early anisotropy changes in the corpus callosum of patients with optic neuritis.

INTRODUCTION: Optic neuritis (ON) and any other early manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS) are referred to as clinically isolated syndro … P=0.004), whereas patients without progression did not. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the corpus callosum is an early site for development of anisotropy changes in MS patients with ON. There seems to be a primary FA decrease in all patients with ON that only deteriorates in the group developing definite MS.

Diffuse cerebral hypomyelination with cerebellar atrophy and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum.

Three unrelated Japanese patients who presented with ataxia and mild mental retardation were examined in this study. Early development was normal in two patients and slightly delayed in one. All could walk independently, but were unstable due to cerebellar ataxia. They had mild intellectual retardation and displayed slow, progressive, and mild clinical courses. Two patients lost the ability to walk at 12 and 25 years of age. Brain MRI of the three patients revealed diffuse cerebral hypomyelination, moderate cerebellar cortical atrophy, and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, which were seen in …

Agenesis of the corpus callosum and cerebral anomalies in inborn errors of metabolism.

Dysgenesis of the corpus callosum has been recognized as a marker for aberrant development of the central nervous system. It has been suggested that developmental defects of the corpus callosum may be more frequently encountered in patients with inborn errors of metabolism. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of developmental defects of the corpus callosum in patients attending a genetics-metabolic disorders clinic, to describe the spectrum of abnormalities in brain development in patients with confirmed inborn errors of metabolism and abnormalities of the corp…

Characteristics, associations and outcome of partial agenesis of the corpus callosum in the fetus.

OBJECTIVES: To report, in a population of fetuses diagnosed with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (PACC), the sonographic characterization, incidence of cerebral, extracerebral and chromosomal anomalies, and outcome. In addition, in some of our cases a comparison was made between findings on ultrasound and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all cases of PACC seen at two referral centers for prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies over a 10-year period. The following variables were assessed: indication for referral, additional cerebral …

The corpus callosum, interhemisphere interactions, and the function of the right hemisphere of the brain.

A complex clinical-neuropsychological study was performed by the Luriya method before and after surgery in 36 patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the corpus callosum. The symptoms of local lesions to the various parts of the corpus callosum are described. Symptoms of partial lesioning of the corpus callosum were found to be modality-specific, though only relatively. The symptoms of dyscopia or dysgraphia could appear in isolation fro each other. Combined lesions of the medial parts of the brain (cingulate cortex, frontal lobes) and the corpus callosum significantly increased the…

Abnormalities in MRI-measured signal intensity in the corpus callosum in schizophrenia.

The microstructural integrity of the corpus callosum (CC) in first-episode schizophrenia patients was assessed by measuring the signal intensity (SI) in T1-weighted MRI images. Analyses revealed that compared to both healthy controls and non-schizophrenic patients, schizophrenia patients showed reductions in SI in all the callosal subregions, the genu, body, isthmus and splenium in first-episode schizophrenia. These results indicate that schizophrenia is characterized by pathology of this principal interhemispheric commissure; the abnormalities may reflect distributed (rather than localized) i…

Angular analysis of corpus callosum in 18 patients with frontonasal dysplasia.

Considering the rarity of the frontonasal dysplasia (FD) and the few reports about it in a large casuistry using magnetic resonance image (MRI), we describe the results of the angular analysis of the corpus callosum of 18 individuals with FD (7 male, 11 female), using an easily-reproductive method. Group I had 12 individuals with isolated form and Group II had 6 individuals with FD syndromic with unknown etiology. The results are presented in set. Comparing with the control group, patients with FD presented alpha angle increase and beta and gamma angles reduction (p<0.05). Alpha and gamma angl…

Hippocampal malrotation with normal corpus callosum in a child with Opitz syndrome.

We present cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a 6-year-old boy with Opitz syndrome. The electroencephalogram revealed epileptiform abnormalities in both frontal regions. MRI showed normal callosal development, but a rounded shape of the left hippocampus due to malrotation. The temporal horn was slightly dilated on the left side. These features were consistent with isolated hippocampal malrotation.
