Continuous in-the-field measurement of heart rate: Correlates of drug use, craving, stress, and mood in polydrug users.

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory physiological monitoring could clarify antecedents and consequences of drug use and could contribute to a sensor-trig … n of the dose of cocaine reported (F(1,8)=207.7, p<.0001). HR was higher when participants reported craving heroin (F(1,16)=230.9, p<.0001) or cocaine (F(1,14)=157.2, p<.0001) than when they reported of not craving. HR was lower (p<.05) in randomly prompted entries in which participants reported feeling relaxed, feeling happy, or watching TV, and was high …

Effects of transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation on drug use and responses to cue-induced craving: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation (TEAS) avoids the use of needles, and instead delivers a mild electric current at t … inutes of stimulation below the detection levels. The participants recorded their drug use and drug cravings daily. At 1 hour after the last morning session of TEAS or sham stimulation, a cue-induced craving EEG evaluation was conducted. Event-related P300 potentials (ERPs) were recorded, sorted, and analyzed for specific image types (neutral objects, non …

Stress in the daily lives of cocaine and heroin users: relationship to mood, craving, relapse triggers, and cocaine use.

RATIONALE: Quantitative real-time data on the stress experienced by drug misusers in their daily lives may provide additional insight into stress's role in drug use. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate stress in relation to craving, mood, relapse-trigger exposure, and cocaine use in cocaine-dependent outpatients. METHODS: Methadone-maintained cocaine- and heroin-abusing outpatients (N = 114) provided ecological momentary assessment data on handheld computers. Ratings of stress were compared to those of craving and mood and past-hour exposure to putative drug-use triggers in r…

Endogenous GDNF in ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens does not play a role in the incubation of heroin craving.

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) activity in ventral tegmental area (VTA) mediates the time-dependent increases in cue-induced cocaine-seeking after withdrawal (incubation of cocaine craving). Here, we studied the generality of these findings to incubation of heroin craving. Rats were trained to self-administer heroin for 10 days (6 hours/day; 0.075 mg/kg/infusion; infusions were paired with a tone-light cue) and tested for cue-induced heroin-seeking in extinction tests after 1, 11 or 30 withdrawal days. Cue-induced heroin seeking was higher after 11 or 30 days than after 1 d…

The effect of acamprosate on alcohol craving and correlation with hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis hormones and beta-endorphin.

Acamprosate is a widely utilized, efficacious treatment for relapse prevention in alcohol dependent patients. The mechanism of acamprosate action is hypothesized to be by modulation of craving responses. Previous research has suggested that acamprosate may affect the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis as well as beta-endorphin. The aim of the present study was to investigate if acamprosate attenuates alcohol craving following a short-term treatment, and if craving and drinking measures are correlated to changes in HPA-axis hormones and beta-endorphin. In a double-blind design, 56 alcoho…

The role of low progesterone and tension as triggers of perimenstrual chocolate and sweets craving: some negative experimental evidence.

Approximately half of the 40-50% of North American women who crave chocolate or sweets do so principally in the perimenstrum, the part of the menstrual cycle surrounding the onset of menstruation. We test two hypotheses about the events that trigger these cravings: 1) the premenstrual drop in progesterone levels; or 2) dysphoria or tension in the perimenstruum. Chocolate craving, sweets craving, and other perimenstrual symptoms were rated daily for six menstrual cycles by a sample of women with severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Forty-four women satisfied criteria for cyclicity in chocolate c…

Acute Effects of Brief Exercise on Alcohol Craving Among Young Adults With Problematic Alcohol Use: A Systematic Review.

Alcohol craving is a key process in alcohol abuse, especially during young adulthood, a period of heightened vulnerability and continued brain development. Although acute physical exercise has been proposed as a potential strategy to reduce craving and modulate affective and cognitive processes, current evidence remains limited regarding its effectiveness and underlying mechanisms. This systematic review examined the effects of brief exercise interventions on alcohol craving in young adults with problematic alcohol use or alcohol use disorder (AUD) and explored available evidence on associated…

Exploring fMRI-neurofeedback to reduce craving-related brain activity in people with cannabis use disorder: A feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) can come with intense cravings, which can trigger compulsive use/relapse, underscored by anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) hyperactivity during cannabis cue-reactivity functional neuroimaging (fMRI) tasks. ACC activity can be reduced during real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback (fMRI-neurofeedback) in participants who use substances other than cannabis, but remains untested in CUD. We investigated the feasibility of fMRI-neurofeedback to reduce ACC activity and subjective craving in 10 participants with moderate-to-severe CUD. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A cue-…

Mindfulness Training vs Recovery Support for Opioid Use, Craving, and Anxiety During Buprenorphine Treatment: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: During buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), risk factors for opioid relapse or treatment dropout include comorbid substance use disorder, anxiety, or residual opioid craving. There is a need for a well-powered trial to evaluate virtually delivered groups, including both mindfulness and evidence-based approaches, to address these comorbidities during buprenorphine treatment. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of the Mindful Recovery Opioid Use Disorder Care Continuum (M-ROCC) vs active control among adults receiving buprenorphine for OUD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PART…

A network perspective on heroin use: associations between craving, withdrawal symptoms, dependence, loss of control, and psychosocial consequences.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a complex diagnosis characterized by symptoms such as craving, tolerance, withdrawal, and impaired social, occupational, or recreational activities. However, there is a lack of data about the interconnectedness of these symptoms, in particular the links between withdrawal symptoms and psychosocial impairment. The present study uses symptom network analysis to better understand these associations surrounding heroin use. METHODS: We used data from individuals who reported heroin use during the past 12 months in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health …

Addictive behaviors and craving during the COVID-19 pandemic of people who have recovered from substance use disorder.

Stressors caused by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) contribute to increased addictive behaviors in the general population worldwide. Little is known, however, about addictive behaviors of people who have recovered a long time ago, even years, from substance use disorder (SUD). The goal of the present research was to examine the craving for drug use and addictive behaviors (tobacco and alcohol consumption, viewing of pornography, gambling, and shopping online) of people who recovered from SUD, before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: During one week of isolation impos…

A mother's bond: An ecological momentary assessment study of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and substance craving during pregnancy.

Pregnant women with substance use disorder (SUD) comprise an underserved population with complex treatment needs, including complications from trauma histories and comorbid psychological disorders. Using ecological momentary assessment, we examined momentary fluctuations in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, prenatal bonding, and substance craving, among pregnant women in SUD treatment who had a history of trauma. We hypothesized that (a) PTSD symptoms and prenatal bonding would each be associated with substance craving and (b) PTSD symptoms would be negatively associated with pren…

AMPA receptor and metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 adaptations in the nucleus accumbens core during incubation of methamphetamine craving.

Cue-induced drug craving progressively intensifies after withdrawal from self-administration of cocaine, methamphetamine, and other drugs of abuse, a phenomenon termed incubation of craving. For cocaine and methamphetamine, expression of incubated craving ultimately depends on strengthening of nucleus accumbens (NAc) synapses through an accumulation of high conductance Ca2+-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) that is detectable with electrophysiological approaches. This study sought to further characterize glutamate receptor adaptations in NAc core during methamphetamine incubation. Previous …

The associations between self-consciousness, depressive state and craving to drink among alcohol dependent patients undergoing protracted withdrawal.

CONTEXT: In order to understand how certain personality traits influence the relation between depression symptoms and craving for alcohol, trait self-consciousness (trait SC) was examined during a withdrawal and detoxification program. METHODS: Craving (Obsessive and Compulsive Drinking Scale), depressive state (Beck Depression Inventory) and trait SC (Revised Self-Consciousness Scale) were assessed in alcohol-dependent inpatients (DSM-IV, N = 30) both at the beginning (T1: day 1 or 2) and at the end (T2: day 14 to18) of protracted withdrawal during rehabilitation. RESULTS: A significant dec…

Long-term methadone maintenance reduces protracted symptoms of heroin abstinence and cue-induced craving in Chinese heroin abusers.

BACKGROUND: Cession of heroin use may be followed by a protracted-abstinence (PA) syndrome consisting of craving, negative mood, and physiological changes. PA symptoms have rarely been compared between drug-free and methadone-maintained former heroin users after similar lengths of heroin abstinence. METHODS: Seventy former heroin users were included in one of four groups: in day 15-45 of methadone maintenance therapy (short-term MMT), in month 5-6 of MMT (long-term MMT), opiate-free for 15-45 days after methadone-assisted heroin detoxification (short-term post-methadone), and opiate-free for …

Smartphone movement data can reliably predict smoking lapses and cravings to enable timely smoking cessation support.

Decades of research aiming to develop effective smoking interventions have identified triggers that contribute to failed quitting attempts i … g traditional triggers (e.g. time of the day). Crucially, movement data can be used to predict high-craving incidents and lapses in the 3 months period following quitting smoking with similarly high accuracy, even when predictions are made without any personal data (i.e. when the model is trained using only data from other smokers). These findings can tra …

A Latent Class Analysis of Psychopathology Among Adults in Residential Substance Use Treatment: Associations With Craving and Treatment Dropout.

OBJECTIVE: Adults receiving residential treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) who have comorbid psychopathology face unique challenges, including an increased risk of substance use craving and treatment dropout against medical advice (AMA). Prior studies have investigated associations between specific forms of psychopathology and these outcomes. However, psychological disorders often co-occur and may cluster together to amplify risk for craving and treatment dropout AMA. METHODS: This study used latent class analysis to identify patterns of psychopathology in 1046 adult patients receiv…

CannChange: a protocol for a feasibility study using fMRI-based neurofeedback to change the neurobiology of craving in cannabis use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) affects ∼33 million people globally and can be underscored by intense cravings to use cannabis, which can trigger compulsive use and relapse. Functional MRI (fMRI) evidence demonstrates hyperactivity of addiction brain pathways during cannabis cue-reactivity, consistent with prominent neuroscientific theories of addiction, particularly within the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The ACC also emerges as a key region of real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback (fMRI-neurofeedback) studies demonstrating voluntary changes during cravings in persons who use subst…
