The impact of colonialism on health and health services in Tanzania.

This article is about the problems of malnutrition and disease in a rural area of an underdeveloped country, Tanzania. The particular way in which health problems were conceptualized during the colonial era, the structure of the medical services established, and the effects of health care on the health status and size of the rural population of Songea District in Tanzania are shown in the article to have been determined by the economic, social, and political requirements of German and British colonial rulers rather than by the health needs of the African population. Colonial economic policy em

Management practices and elevated atmospheric CO2 levels helped to sustain a high level of global rice production.

Rice is a staple agricultural resource for over half the global population. Using the data-modeling methods, which account for major biophysical processes and all major environmental and management factors, our study shows that rice production for 2006-2015 has increased by almost 2-fold since the 1960s, despite growing concerns about climate change and other extreme climate event risks. Management practices through the expansion of irrigated and non-irrigated cropping harvested areas and the increased rates of N fertilizer and manure application have helped to maintain higher production rates

Plant tolerance is explained by resource-based plant-nematode interactions.

Plant-parasitic nematodes are responsible for significant economic losses worldwide, affecting a wide range of crops. They infect and divert resources and impair plant growth. While resistance aims to limit parasite burden, tolerance is the ability of a plant to maintain its yield despite infection, which offers a complementary and potentially more sustainable strategy. Understanding how tolerance arises and operates requires mechanistic insights into host-parasite interactions and the constraints that shape them. In this study, we develop a mathematical model describing the coupled dynamics o

Evaluation of Bioinsecticides for Management of Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and the Effect on the Whitefly Predator Delphastus catalinae (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Organic Squash.

Organic zucchini squash is a high-value vegetable crop in Florida and potential exists to expand its production throughout the state. A lack of knowledge on the effectiveness of organic products and their integration with natural enemies is an important constraint to the regulation of pest populations in organic squash production in Florida. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of insecticides labeled for organic production that can be used for management of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, on organically grown squash; and to determine the effects of the most efficient

Tolerance to soil acidity of soybean (Glycine max L.) genotypes under field conditions Southwestern Ethiopia.

Soil acidity with associated low nutrient availability is one of the major constraints to soybean production in southwestern Ethiopia. Integrated use of lime and acid-tolerant crops is believed to reduce soil acidity and improve crop production. The experiment was conducted in the field condition of Mettu, southwestern Ethiopia during the 2017/18 main cropping season. The experiment comprised fifteen soybean genotypes and two soil amendment (lime and unlimed) treatments arranged in a split-plot design with three replications. For each treatment, four rows were planted per plot; data related to…

From Reproduction to Resilience: New Frameworks for Managing Crop Diversity.

Plant breeding has progressed from phenotype-based selection to increasingly precise genetic and agronomic interventions. Advances in molecular breeding, genome engineering, and crop management have improved productivity, but have also promoted the widespread use of genetically uniform cultivars optimized for controlled production systems. While uniformity facilitates predictability and mechanization, it may constrain adaptive capacity under increasingly variable environmental conditions. In parallel, recent developments in digital agriculture, including high-resolution phenotyping, remote-sen

Functional Roles of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria in Pistachio: Implications for Stress Tolerance, Nutrient Acquisition and Disease Suppression.

Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is among the most economically important nut crops worldwide. They are increasingly exposed to the environmental constraints associated with climate change, including drought, salinity, nutritional imbalances, and heightened disease pressure. These stressors compromise plant growth, physiological performance, nutrient acquisition, and orchard productivity, highlighting the need for sustainable strategies to enhance crop resilience. This review critically examines the current knowledge on the functional roles of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-pr

Algal bioactive compounds for next-generation biopesticides: a multi-target resource for sustainable pest management.

The rapid growth in global population and the incessant demand for food warrant greater attention to sustainable agricultural practices. To ensure adequate food security, protection of crops from exposure to biotic agents (e.g., pathogens and insects) is imperative. Over the decades, synthetic pesticides have been used to control pests in agriculture. However, excessive and uncontrolled use of these chemical compounds causes serious environmental and health hazards. Therefore, algal biopesticides are used as biological agents to control soil-borne diseases and plant pests. The algae secrete a

Parasitic Nematodes of Sugarcane: A Major Productivity Impediment and Grand Challenges in Management.

Sugarcane is an important cash crop grown in 137 countries, accounting for 80% of global sugar production. It supports the livelihood of more than 100 million people and up to 25% of the rural population in some countries. Plant-parasitic nematodes are one significant constraint in sugarcane production and can lead to a loss of up to 30% in productivity. More than 300 species of parasitic nematodes have been discovered in sugarcane soil. Owing to limited data, the potential damage to sugarcane crops caused by parasitic nematodes is often underestimated. The main nematodes present in sugarcane

New environmentally-friendly antimicrobials and biocides from Andean and Mexican biodiversity.

Persistent application of pesticides often leads to accumulation in the environment and to the development of resistance in various organisms. These chemicals frequently degrade slowly and have the potential to bio-accumulate across the food chain and in top predators. Cancer and neuronal damage at genomic and proteomic levels have been linked to exposure to pesticides in humans. These negative effects encourage search for new sources of biopesticides that are more "environmentally-friendly" to the environment and human health. Many plant or fungal compounds have significant biological activit

[The agrochemical arsenal versus the enemies of plants. General considerations].

Plants are attacked, not only by various microorganisms, but also by other enemies, such as molluscs, nematods, mites, and insects. They have evolved complex and efficient mechanisms to defend themselves against pathogens (hypersensitive response, systemic acquired resistance) and herbivores (release of volatile compounds that attract predators of the herbivores, accumulation of proteinase inhibitors). Yet, the confrontation of the plants with their invaders can also turn to the advantage of the latter. In the past, the attacks of crops regularly brought about dramatic economic losses. From th

Enhancement of Plant Productivity in the Post-Genomics Era.

Obtaining high plant yield is not always achievable in agricultural activity as it is determined by various factors, including cultivar quality, nutrient and water supplies, degree of infection by pathogens, natural calamities and soil conditions, which affect plant growth and development. More noticeably, sustainable plant productivity to provide sufficient food for the increasing human population has become a thorny issue to scientists in the era of unpredictable global climatic changes, appearance of more tremendous or multiple stresses, and land restriction for cultivation. Water and nitrogen application enhance eggplant productivity and nitrogen use efficiency in an arid environment.

Water scarcity and excessive nitrogen fertilizer application are bottlenecks constraining the sustainable development of agriculture in the cold and arid Hexi Corridor region of China. However, the interactive effects of deficit irrigation and nitrogen rate on eggplant physiology, yield, and resource efficiency remain insufficiently quantified for this region, and the optimal water-nitrogen combination for practical application is unclear. To address this gap, a two-year field experiment was conducted with three water deficit levels (W0, full irrigation; W1, mild water deficit; and W2, moderat

Functional diversity of farmland bees across rural-urban landscapes in a tropical megacity.

Urbanization poses a major threat to biodiversity and food security, as expanding cities, especially in the Global South, increasingly compete with natural and agricultural lands. However, the impact of urban expansion on agricultural biodiversity in tropical regions is overlooked. Here we assess how urbanization affects the functional response of farmland bees, the most important pollinators for crop production. We sampled bees across three seasons in 36 conventional vegetable-producing farms spread along an urbanization gradient in Bengaluru, an Indian megacity. We investigated how landscape…

The Fragile State of Industrial Agriculture: Estimating Crop Yield Reductions in a Global Catastrophic Infrastructure Loss Scenario.

Modern civilization relies on a complex, globally interconnected industrial agriculture system to produce food. Its unprecedented yields hinge on external inputs like machinery, fertilizers, and pesticides, rendering it vulnerable to disruptions in production and international trade. Such a disruption could be caused by large-scale damage to the electrical grid. Solar storms, nuclear detonations in the upper atmosphere, pandemics, or cyber-attacks, could cause this severe damage to electrical infrastructure. To assess the impact of such a global catastrophic infrastructure loss on major food c
