A Cross-Cultural Examination of Parental Knowledge of Concussion in Three Countries.

The aim of the present study was to examine and compare knowledge regarding concussion among parents of youth soccer players, ages 5-17, from the United States, Israel, and Sicily. Results revealed parents from the United States were more knowledgeable than Israeli and Sicilian parents and were more likely to have a previous history of concussion in their children, themselves, and their social contacts. The success of concussion education, programming, and legislation in the US may account for the greater knowledge of US parents and is reason to advocate for similar resources for youth athlete

Belief in Social Mobility Mitigates Hostility Resulting From Disadvantaged Social Standing.

Comparing economically unfavorably with similar others has detrimental consequences for an individual, ultimately resulting in low physical health, delinquency, and hostility. In four studies ( N = 2,032), we examined whether believing in a mobile society-one offering fair chances and opportunity-mitigates hostile emotions resulting from disadvantaged social standing. We find that with increasing mobility belief, negative comparisons have gradually less impact on hostility. Specifically, measured (Studies 1 and 4) and manipulated (Studies 2 and 3) social mobility belief moderated the link betw

The French version of the autism-spectrum quotient in adolescents: a cross-cultural validation study.

We assessed the accuracy of the French version of the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) in adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) compared to healthy controls and adolescents with psychiatric disorders (PDs). Three groups of adolescents, aged 11-18, were assessed: 116 with AS/HFA (93 with IQ ≥ 85 and 20 with 70 ≤ IQ < 85), 39 with other PDs, and 199 healthy controls. The AS/HFA group scored significantly higher than the healthy control and PD groups. A cut-off score of 26 was used to differentiate the autism group from healthy controls with 0.89 sensitivity and 0

Rates and characteristics of sleep paralysis in the general population of Denmark and Egypt.

In the current research we report data from two studies that examined rates and characteristics of sleep paralysis (SP) in the general population of Denmark and Egypt. In Study I, individuals from Denmark and Egypt did not differ in age whereas there were more males in the Egyptian sample (47 vs. 64 %); in Study II, individuals from Denmark and Egypt were comparable in terms of age and gender distribution. In Study I we found that significantly fewer individuals had experienced SP in Denmark [25 % (56/223)] than in Egypt [44 % (207/470)] p < .001. In Study II we found that individuals who had

Psychometric properties of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and separation criterion between Spanish youths with and without subtypes of social anxiety.

In this study, we analyzed the reliability and validity of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and propose a separation criterion between youths with specific and generalized social anxiety and youths without social anxiety. A sample of 1012 Spanish youths attending school completed the SIAS, the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Youth Self-Report for Ages 11-18 and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent. The factor analysis suggests the existence of three factors in the SIAS, the firs

Monitoring equity in immunization coverage.

This paper analyses trends in coverage of three doses of diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine (DPT3) by wealth groups in selected countries. It discusses the depth of disparities in coverage by wealth and changes during the 1990s. Complete assessment of equity in income and its trends have been discussed in other papers, however issues related to children's well-being have often been brushed aside because the comparable data needed to fully understand and rectify inequalities is lacking. A focal point of this paper pertains to gathering any and all information recorded about the immunization o

Reproductive factors and incidence of breast cancer: an international ecological study.

Ecological studies can help in understanding the relation of reproductive history of breast cancer. We analyzed data from 9416 women, comprising the control groups of seven countries (Australia, People's Republic of China, Colombia, (former) German Democratic Republic, Israel, Philippines, and Thailand) from the WHO international, multi-center case-control study of female cancers. Positive correlations with country-specific breast cancer incidence were observed for (median) duration of reproductive life (r > or = 0.95, p < 0.005), age at menopause (r > or = 0.84, p < 0.025) and delay to first

Does literacy have an effect on stick construction tasks?

Since constructional apraxia is often concomitant with brain lesions, the study of constructional tasks in the non-brain-damaged population might be useful in helping to disentangle other causal factors. This paper explores the performance of illiterate individuals (N = 29) as compared to that of semiliterates (N = 21) and literates (N = 23) in order to see the effect of reading and writing abilities on constructional tasks. Each participant was asked to construct 4 figures based upon models having varying degrees of complexity. A global criterion of lack of fidelity and several analytic crite

The Body Attitude Test: validation of the Spanish version.

A Spanish version of the Body Attitude Test (BAT) is presented. It was validated with 165 eating disorder patients (79 anorexia nervosa, 86 bulimia nervosa) and 220 schoolgirls from the general population. Factor analysis allowed the extraction of four factors, as in the original questionnaire, but with different item loadings on each. Taken together, these four factors accounted for 67.1% of the variance. The alpha reliability coefficient was 0.92 in both groups. The test-retest reliability with a one-week interval was 0.91 in a subgroup of 34 eating disorder patients and in a subgroup of 43

The end of fertility: age, fecundity and fecundability in women.

Onset of capacity for childbearing in women is dated biologically by menarche, although actual onset may be delayed. The end of childbearing is less understood but recent demographic and biological research on fertility at older ages in clarifying the end of fertility. The demographic view of declining fertility with age is based on age-specific fertility in natural fertility populations, artificial insemination and pregnancy rates by age and World Fertility Survey data. New data from the Demographic and Health Surveys on exposure to the risk of pregnancy shows that whereas older women biologi
